Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Kitchen closing on 834 - REALLY difficult to guesstimate in the airport lounge but I had cous cous salad, hummus and a small pitta. Thinking that’s about 650?! Managed to be very virtuous and ignore the booze and cakes which was hard 🤣 I’ll go for a mini tomorrow I think just in case my guestimating today is wildly off… also got a gym session booked first thing.

Kitchen closed at 585. Almost a perfect day but I had a run in with several Jaffa cakes on my way to bed.

OohMrDarcy · 11/03/2025 09:06

didn't fast in the end yesterday only food I could face was carbs so would have gone over - didn't eat very much though so would be surprised if I didn't have an accidental mini...

slowly improving so hoping to fit in a proper FD on wednesday

well done to the successful fasters!

harriethoyle · 11/03/2025 11:31

Sorry you're still feeling rough @OohMrDarcy

I'm aiming for c. 800 today after a PT session this morning, think it will be hard but will do for a b2b if I can make it...

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 11/03/2025 14:22

Managed a mini yesterday - around 1100 - and aiming for the same today and Thursday, as those are my three office days this week. Also trying to keep to a calorie deficit on my NFDs - have given up crisps and chocolate for Lent, every little helps!

harriethoyle · 11/03/2025 18:47

I think giving up snacking is massive @SydneyCarton - I always lose weight more quickly when I don’t snack. It’s just that I love snacks so much 🤣

Kitchen closed here on 809 so I’ll take that seeing I did a PT session this morning. I’ll aim for minis for the next couple of days I think. Out out on Friday so all bets are off!

Morning all

Finally feeling a bit better... Id say I'm around 70% better now so I'm mostly fine as long as meals are small... Going to attempt my FD and if it ends up a mini I'm not bothered but hopefully will be fine.

Chilli planned for dinner so just a small portion of that for me with no carbs...and no sprinkle of cheese on top this time either!

eekwhatnow · 12/03/2025 10:08

Glad you're feeling better @OohMrDarcy, sounded horrible. Well done everyone pressing on this week.
Checking in for a FD here after a bad NFD yesterday. Not sure how well I'll do as had Pilates before work and have to go out tonight but fingers crossed!

harriethoyle · 12/03/2025 13:48

My god, I ate three pieces of shortbread at lunch and they are SO high in calories - I've barely got 600 left for tea on a NFD! Lesson learned 😂

OP posts:
eekwhatnow · 12/03/2025 16:26

Well that's me steering well clear of shortbread from now on!

OohMrDarcy · 12/03/2025 19:38

Shortbread is lethal but almost always worth it! 😁

Kitchen closed at 650 today. Happy with that. Not too worried what the scales say tomorrow given how rough I've been and trying to avoid dairy (other than my coffee!) for a while to let myself recover...

eekwhatnow · 12/03/2025 20:49

Kitchen closing on 534. I do worry that increasingly on FDs I eat very low calorie proper food so that I can eat most of my calories on biscuits. Bit unhealthy but I really look forward to a Jaffa cake or two last thing to get me through the day.

OohMrDarcy · 13/03/2025 06:37

0.4kg down this morning which is fab considering half hearted week and zero exercise!

@eekwhatnow you need to do what works for you, my aim is to fill FDs with as few carbs as possible to make the day nutritionally dense. I can be a carb fiend at times and it helps to reset my body to crave what it good for me - might be worth a try with the reward of Jaffa cakes the next day?

eekwhatnow · 13/03/2025 07:58

Well done @OohMrDarcy, very satisfying.
Yeah you might be right. My most successful FDs are the ones where I've cooked up a load of veg the night before.

harriethoyle · 13/03/2025 08:18

Well done @OohMrDarcy thats fab! Aiming for a mini today and I’ve got PT after work so hopefully I’ll see some movement on the scales tomorrow… 🤞🏼

Weighed myself this morning for the first time in about 3 weeks and have lost another two pounds, so five pounds down in six weeks and now 11 stone (as far as I can tell, peering short-sightedly at the needle on the scales. DP did insist on getting the mechanical ones as we had digital ones that kept breaking or running out of battery, but I don't find them easy to read at all)

As I'm off chocolate at the moment and denied my favourite M&S dark choc digestives I did add a pack of shortbread fingers to last week's Tesco shop - they are so good but I do have to be disciplined.

harriethoyle · 13/03/2025 19:50

Hurray @SydneyCarton 🥳 that’s a fabulous scale victory! I agree with you on the analogue scales though - I really hate them compared to digital ones.

I’ve been to PT and come home to a delicious and healthy chicken and cauliflower curry. Delicious!

eekwhatnow · 14/03/2025 08:16

Well done @SydneyCarton that's amazing.
Checking in for a mini here mainly as I think it will be an easy day to do one on!

aberjenagain · 14/03/2025 09:17

Congrats on the SVs @SydneyCarton and @OohMrDarcy

Checking in for FD2

harriethoyle · 14/03/2025 10:12

Morning all, we're out tonight with friends and I have already agreed to share the chateaubriand with my husband so it will NOT be a FD at my house 😂But two gym classes and weekend dog walks planned so hopefully I will minimise the damage.

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 14/03/2025 12:03

Thank @aberjenagain , @eekwhatnow @harriethoyle ! 4 more pounds before I am officially back in a "healthy" weight category. I think I would aim for 10st 7 for health, and 10 st for vanity, but we'll see how we go.

I have been known to hold my phone facing down and take a photo of the dial while I'm weighing myself and then zoom in to read it with the bloody analogue things.

Chateaubriand sounds fabulous 😋DD2 is doing a cross country run tomorrow and has requested chilli and rice because the PE teacher has told them to eat carbs the night before, but it feels like a bad idea to fill her with meat and beans and send her out on a mile run 14 hours later Confused

Darker · 14/03/2025 12:37

This week is hopeless for me. I’ve been out two nights this week and had street food the first night and then treated my son to Dishoom last night. Probably eating out tonight as well 😳. But so long as I don’t gain I don’t mind too much as I am having a lovely week.

Bottl · 16/03/2025 18:18

Hi everyone!
It's been a very long time since I've shown my face but I'm creeping back in and hoping to get back on the 5:2 wagon.
First FD tomorrow but can't decide when would be best to do the second one. Work is so busy at the moment which I find really stressful and just want to comfort eat so need to get my head back in the zone to stay focussed.
Any word from BigChoc recently?

Darker · 16/03/2025 23:40

This week was a complete write-off. Very social. Bracing for a lean week ahead to get back on track.

OohMrDarcy · 17/03/2025 07:21

Morning all

Going to attempt a b2b today and tomorrow... Definitely fasting today, tomorrow is the only other day I can do this week but will see how I feel rather than put myself under pressure...

Dinner tonight is a small portion of roast chicken and a bit of Cesar salad and a handful of leftover Parmentier potatoes (last nights dinner)

Well done all on the FDs / SVs! @SydneyCarton 4lbs away from healthy is amazing!

@Darker - I wouldn't worry about the nights out, fasting has just provided you balance for the week!
