5:2 thread 102: Faster than a speeding bullet!

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

FDs a bit tricky this week as it’s half term but I might try to do a couple of 16:8s and keep tracking calories. Weighed myself yesterday and I am 3lbs down in two weeks (had an NHS health check a fortnight ago and was unpleasantly surprised by the scales, so trying to knuckle down to it!)

Castlerigg · 17/02/2025 21:43

Thanks @harriethoyle. I think I'm going to be ravenous tomorrow, I don't know that I'll manage B2B, but we'll see.

harriethoyle · 18/02/2025 07:36

Anyone with me today? Signing in for my first FD. Tuna thin for lunch and veggie canneloni for dinner…

OP posts:
Castlerigg · 18/02/2025 15:50

I think I might be on for day 2 of a B2B! After thinking I'd be ravenous, I'm actually doing alright. A had a latte this morning, and sort-of-omelette-but-not* for lunch.

Half an onion, chopped and stir fried, and two eggs broken into it and stir fried, so it's all broken up. Got to watch the olive oil though.

harriethoyle · 18/02/2025 16:32

Well done @Castlerigg 🥳 I’m freaking starving 🤣🙈

OP posts:
Castlerigg · 18/02/2025 19:47

I'm on 571 and I'm hungry. I've literally just finished dinner, which was later than planned too. I might have to have something else, or I won't last until morning and I'll end up eating something rubbish.

harriethoyle · 18/02/2025 20:35

@Castlerigg you’ve done better than me! I’m on 771. I’m going to try a form of b2b tomorrow but it’ll be a bit higher than a normal one because I have a PT session at 4. Will aim for 1500 across the two days I think 😬 if all else fails I’ll try again on Thursday!

harriethoyle · 19/02/2025 08:46

Morning all - signing for a sort of restricted day... we'll see! Sticking to coffee and normal lunch and we'll see how I get on later...

OP posts:
Castlerigg · 19/02/2025 10:25

I woke up only feeling moderately hungry today. I'm aiming to be fairly restrained through the day, because I'm planning meatballs and spaghetti for dinner. And possibly wine.

sweetgingercat · 19/02/2025 18:21

Yes, I'm fasting today. After my party weekend and two days off with half term visitors I'm back on it today and blimey, I'm starving! I've had a boiled egg and a miso soup so far with a few cups of tea and I'm getting irritated at how hungry I am! Not too long to go though...

If I can, I'll be back tomorrow for a b2b...

Good luck fasters!

harriethoyle · 19/02/2025 19:25

Keep going @sweetgingercat - the finish line is in sight!!

kitchen closed on 848 which means c1600 for the b2b but I also walked for an hour today and did a brutal PT session 🤣 so I’m hoping that makes it ok…! It’s a colleagues birthday tomorrow and I’m looking forward to cake 🎂

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 19/02/2025 22:42

Thanks @harriethoyle I made it! Kitchen closed on 655 tonight and I'll take that. Planning on a second day tomorrow...

Well done @harriethoyle , fasting on a brutal PT day, I'm impressed. Enjoy the cake tomorrow...

sweetgingercat · 20/02/2025 12:20

Any fasters out there today? I'm back for the second day of a b2b. So far, so good!

harriethoyle · 20/02/2025 14:00

I'm on a mini today @sweetgingercat - currently on 614 and planning fishcake and veg for tea, so hoping to finish around 850.

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 20/02/2025 20:07

Good to know someone's around @harriethoyle I reckon half term must have scuppered a few fast days on here! I've had an apple, an egg and a miso soup and I was really hungry earlier, but got through that. Going to have salad for supper soon.

I notice you often have a fish cake. Is this a home made one or do you get a low carb/cal one from somewhere?

harriethoyle · 20/02/2025 21:23

I’m an out and out pre-mader @sweetgingercat 🤣 I either go Lidl or Aldi, they’re generally under 300 cals and with steamed veg they’re a great FD dinner. My favourites are the melt in the middle haddock ones or the Thai king prawn fishcake.

harriethoyle · 20/02/2025 21:24

Oh and kitchen closed on 938 which I’m happy enough with. Cannot WAIT for wine time tomorrow!

OP posts:
aberjenagain · 21/02/2025 11:34

Morning all, checking in for FD2. My NSV this week is that despite half term and having my well-meaning-but-argh parents visiting, I have not yet been driven to drink (chocolate has however featured more heavily than usual) 💪

(I’m not tee-total, just working hard to cut down, and also having to compromise between eating nice food vs drinking nice wine to stay within TDEE)

sweetgingercat · 21/02/2025 11:48

Those sound delicious @harriethoyle Im def going to try some. Well done on your mini fast. I had my usual salad and made it to 550 in the end.

@aberjenagain I find half term really testing too! It’s a very sociable time and fast days are hard to fit in! Good luck today!

Darker · 22/02/2025 13:42

Hello. Been away for a week on retreat - lots of food but it’s been good, vegetarian food and lots of exercise and sleep. Hoping that the scales reflect this virtue on my Monday weigh in.

harriethoyle · 22/02/2025 15:00

Same @aberjenagain - the balance between the scales and the wine is a constant battle!

I think Lidl does the best fishcakes @sweetgingercat if you have one near you

🤞🏼🤞🏼 @Darker we’ve got friends over this evening for pulled pork and eton mess- am not sure that counts as virtuous 🤣

Just dropping in to say how impressed I am by those of you managing to keep it together when there's a change in routine.
Half term has totally scuppered me because of wine basically. Decided to just accept the week wouldn't be as good as I'd hoped and plan to get firmly back on the wagon come Monday. Really hope I do as felt so good the week before half term.

Darker · 24/02/2025 08:35

Weigh-in was Not Too Bad this morning considering that I haven’t fasted… I got ‘fed’ this weekend as everyone seemed to think that the retreat would have involved starvation rations, which it most definitely didn’t! Anyway, now just a few ounces over x stone this morning so unless I fall into a giant cake and have to eat my way out I should be under by next weigh-in.

OohMrDarcy · 24/02/2025 08:55

Morning all

Checking in for first FD in a few weeks here - had all 3 birthdays in the house since first week in Jan, plus one being an 18th and then half term has made fasting tricky!
Have done a couple of mini's and scales not too far off where they were, so I'm pretty happy but ready to get back to it.

Got a spicy veg soup for lunch and a mini roast (by that I mean loads of veg, normal chicken and only a little bit of roastie / gravy) for dinner... currently on glass two of water and feeling good.

Had LOADS of compliments lately on how I'm looking, I think a combination of my body catching up with me, lots of long walks which leave me feeling peaceful and happy too, plus my skin is clearing up - love it when I get to this bit of fasting and all the benefits are showing!

Hope everyone else is doing well?

eekwhatnow · 24/02/2025 08:59

Nice positives @OohMrDarcy and @Darker for a Monday morning!
Also checking in for my first FD in over a week. Bit nervous as a little under the weather and it's a busy day with a full evening too so can't go to bed early. However, feeling determined and really want the mood boost of a successful FD!
The promise of warmer weather is quite the motivator too.
