Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

oops posted too soon,

not particularly in the mood to 'eat well' today but I'm reminding myself that anything else I want I can have tomorrow 😇

aberjenagain · 05/03/2025 12:27

Hello, popping in for some accountability. Have had a couple of eff it days (a combination of poor sleep, hormone rollercoaster, poorly 9yo, frustration at scales not moving, and pulling a muscle in my back on second outing to gym 🙄). Am going to give myself grace this week, focus on getting back into sensible habits from today and probs look to pick the fasting back up next week (as long as I swerve DD’s stomach bug 😱)

well done/good luck to this week’s fasters!

harriethoyle · 05/03/2025 14:29

I'm leaving them in the office tonight @OohMrDarcy as i am WFH tomorrow, Friday and Monday so they don't derail me...! Then I will share them with colleagues I think!

@aberjenagain it's TEDIOUS but trying tracking non fast days for a couple of weeks. I've been doing it recently and it's eye opening (and slightly horrifying!) how much damage you can inadvertently do with a biscuit here, a hot chocolate there... 😜

aberjenagain · 05/03/2025 15:21

Thanks @harriethoyle . I’ve been religiously tracking all my NFDs since starting back on 5:2 in Jan and I know I’m not going over TDEE. Being over 40 is just crap (why hello there visceral fat!) 😁 and telling myself my body is taking a breather after initial rapid loss. Marathon not a sprint etc etc etc. Just a bit of a perfect storm the last couple of days

eekwhatnow · 05/03/2025 18:15

@aberjenagain it's all such a head game, isn't it? All those things you're telling yourself are facts though.

harriethoyle · 05/03/2025 18:40

Had a wotsit based snaccident, so the kitchen is closing on 820. Resisted the shortbread though!! Back for day 2 tomorrow…

eekwhatnow · 05/03/2025 21:17

Kitchen closed on 549, really pleased and really looking forward to tomorrow. Also first FD that I haven't felt too short tempered! Good luck tomorrow @harriethoyle

harriethoyle · 06/03/2025 07:55

Morning gang, signing in for day two of my b2b - anyone with me?

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 06/03/2025 08:12

phone was messing about last night and wouldn't let me untag someone I typed by mistake so left my update for this morning

kitchen closed at 540 which I was happy with.

Weighed in this morning and another 0.8kg down so pretty much where I was before my break now. Over the moon.

Meals for the rest of the week pretty much planned and shouldn't be too bad - fingers crossed for next week!

Darker · 06/03/2025 08:17

Good news, @OohMrDarcy .

harriethoyle · 06/03/2025 13:00

Well done @OohMrDarcy that's a great SV! I've just had a lunch and took the opportunity of a lull in work this morning to get out for a 40 minute walk in the sunshine so I am feeling quite determined! 😄

OohMrDarcy · 06/03/2025 13:03

ace job @harriethoyle - and a great mood booster too getting the vit D!

harriethoyle · 06/03/2025 18:35

Kitchen closing on 729 to make 1549 for the b2b. Tiny bit high but I’ll cope!

eekwhatnow · 06/03/2025 21:44

Well done @OohMrDarcy
An ok NFD here. 1500 plus 2 glasses of wine that I'm refusing to track. But was my day off and as I also managed 2x 1 hour dog walks and a 30 minute run I'm hoping I'm quids in. Although my dinner tracking wasn't an exact science...

eekwhatnow · 06/03/2025 21:48

Well done @harriethoyle I don't know how you manage them b2b!

Darker · 08/03/2025 09:27

Gah. I’ve done a pre-weigh-in weigh-in (my day is Monday) and am getting frustrated. The loss is happening but it’s incremental. I’ve lost less than a stone in three months. Fair enough we had Christmas and I’ve had two colds, and I’ve been doing more exercise, but I wanted more progress by now.

Today is a FD. Going in hard.

harriethoyle · 08/03/2025 13:38

@Darker to lost almost a stone in the winter and over Christmas and New Year is fantastic!! I’ve only lost 4 and a half pounds 🤣 to put it in context, if you keep this up you’ll be three stone lighter from today by next Christmas…

OP posts:
eekwhatnow · 08/03/2025 15:17

@Darker Almost a stone is great. To turn it round, would you want to weight nearly a stone more right now? I'm impressed that it's spurred you on to go harder.

Darker · 08/03/2025 17:45

Thank you for the words of encouragement. I feel a bit less despairing!

I’ve been gardening and done my messages and am about to go out for my walk. Then I must clean the kitchen because I’ve traipsed bits of garden through it. By the time I’ve done all that I think I’ll be ready for a very virtuous dinner and an early night.

Darker · 10/03/2025 06:38

So this morning wasn’t too bad after all. I fasted fairly well on Saturday but on Sunday we were enjoying the sun and had ice cream and later on we had a hearty meal. So I am quite pleased with more than a pound off this week, and through the x stone barrier.

Thank you for your encouragement!

eekwhatnow · 10/03/2025 07:20

Well done @Darker!
I monitored my weight all week and it was steadily creeping down and then today (official weigh day) it shot back up! Typical! It got down to 1.1kg off mid week but I've ended on .5kg down. I think I need to make my weigh day not a Monday morning.
FD here today. Planning Miso soup and tuna salad for lunch, omelette for supper and biscuit before bed.

aberjenagain · 10/03/2025 08:09

Morning all, back at it after last week’s unintended break. Well done for persevering @Darker and for this morning’s SV.

Joining you for a FD @eekwhatnow - Miso for lunch too, then tofu/veg for tea, plus another ~80 cals for something else but still deciding what that is!

OohMrDarcy · 10/03/2025 09:17

morning all

well done on the SVs!

@Darker - keep going, you're doing ace!

I'm scheduled for a FD today but my stomach isn't right since a dominos on Friday 😳I'm just sipping water at the moment and seeing how it goes - yesterday when I ate a meal I had hours of pain after, but my appetite is still there so going to do whatever I need to until stomach settles down I think... pretty sure it was too much cheese thats done it!

harriethoyle · 10/03/2025 09:53

Well done @Darker 😃

I'm joining you @aberjenagain @OohMrDarcy @eekwhatnow and then back for a second either tomorrow or Wednesday haven’t decided yet

@eekwhatnow don’t forget as long as you have a downwards trajectory on a weekly basis your weigh day doesn’t matter!
