5:2 thread 102: Faster than a speeding bullet!

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

@harriethoyle I’m so sorry about your dog. Saying goodbye is the hardest thing.

OohMrDarcy
Thanks for tagging me in!

I'd really like to lose some weight for my holiday but it's not until October.
Don't think I'd be able to maintain the momentum for 4 months!

That said, I've done the 5:2 in the past and not found it too horrendous and my weight is slowly creeping up again so maybe I will join you all!

Huge condolences to @harriethoyle.
3 years ago we got our first family dog and I didn't realise how strong the bond would be so I'm sending you a massive hug.

harriethoyle · 25/06/2024 09:47

Thanks everyone. Feeling very tired and sad, and she's left such a huge space in the house, for a comparatively little dog😔

Going to fast today because I've decided to skip tonight's exercise class and head home early to walk remaining DDog (who is entirely unbothered by our loss 😂) and I can do that fasted in a way I couldn't cope with rebounding fasted. So I've got a hummus sandwich for lunch and baked fish for tea.

On the plus side I don't want to eat much in the heat. On the minus side, a very cold beer or a chilled rose is faaaaar more tempting!

@harriethoyle so sorry about Ddog! @OohMrDarcy wow! you are an inspiration! doing so well.

Welcome all the many many newbies!! Awsome to have so many around!!!
I m on day 1 today. Doing 500 instead of water fast, as I want to do the yoga in the evening. Thursday next fast.

Weight gone up by 2 kilo and my face looking like a lumpy pillow with 4 eye lids. I need to go to docs about water retention as I think its not just pre-period gain any more. a bit worried frankly

Whatapickle78 · 25/06/2024 12:02

Hi everyone and welcome @NoAprilFool !

Starting my 3rd Fast Day here... hoping to keep it under 600 calories today as didn't do so well last week.

Please can I have a recommendation for a calorie counter app to help me fast? I have a Garmin watch so could use My Fitness Pal if I wanted to share data, but I don't like the look of it as much as others (mostly because it doesn't have pictures 😂)

Has anyone used My Fitness Pal and got on with it? Or is there another better one?

Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome 👋

I use Nutracheck. Its not free but I find it a million times more useable than MFP!

strangerInStrangeLand · 25/06/2024 16:42

running at 580, should close kitchen for the day now. Have a yoga class to go, just have to make sure no eating after class :-)

Whatapickle78 · 25/06/2024 17:38

Thanks - I think I am going to go for Nutracheck too. It’s a lot easier to see what’s what.

please can I also ask another newbie question?

does everyone subtract the calories spent exercising from their 500 calories? The calorie counter apps have both done this automatically for me, as I connected to my Garmin watch and went for an hour long walk at lunch today.

what do you all do? Ignore this and stick to original 500? Or eat the difference?!

Castlerigg · 26/06/2024 07:08

Morning all, thanks for the new thread @harriethoyle, and sorry about your dog. Hope you're doing okay.

I'm back on track now, after a few days not really tracking. I managed about 1000 calories yesterday, which is less than TDEE, and I'm going to try for 800 today.

Have a good day everyone.

strangerInStrangeLand · 26/06/2024 07:26

yesterday's fast was success 612 calories. Next one probably tomorrow or friday.

harriethoyle · 26/06/2024 08:25

Morning all,

Bit of a guestimate for yesterday but think I came in at around 750 calories, which will do. Aiming for the same today.

@Whatapickle78 I don't ever substitute exercise calories. I think there's a real danger of over-estimating what you've burnt!

OohMrDarcy · 26/06/2024 08:39

morning all

lots of successful fasting going on I see!

@Whatapickle78 I use MFP but have a reasonable handle on what I'm doing so its just to keep track, all the premium pop ups etc are annoying mind!
I never substitute exercise calories - they are an estimate so too easy to eat too much

strangerInStrangeLand · 26/06/2024 10:24

@Whatapickle78 Usually we dont substitute workout calories on fast day. better to keep it to 500 if u can.
Tho I have started to go upto 650 after I started doing hot yoga on fast days. hoping to get back to normal in a few weeks

sweetpickle2 · 26/06/2024 10:54

Hello all! Poking my head in to join.

I've lost 10kg this year on Mounjaro, but I've stopped taking it now as sick of the side effects, and trying to go it alone! I have another 7kg to lose, and of all the things MJ has done for me it seems to have killed any desire for brekafast- so I'm going to attempt to keep up 16:8 IF with calorie counting.

SW 107.8kg
CW 97kg
GW 90kg

Whatapickle78 · 26/06/2024 12:00

Thanks everyone that’s really helpful! I think therefore my fast day yesterday was over by about 200 😝 ouch.

onward and upwards tomorrow!

on the plus side, I’ve noticed that stopping all eating at 6pm means I’m no longer hungry in the morning the next day, so am finding the overnight/morning fast very easy. I guess this means I could attempt a partial 16/8 if I wanted to, so that’s a small win…

good luck everyone fasting today! X

Liz2022 · 26/06/2024 12:47

Hello all. I started 5:2 on 10th April this year. First of all I only fasted one day a week but upped to two days from 6th June. At the start I weighed 70 kg. I'm currently 66.1 kg. For reference I'm 57 and 5 feet 4. As time goes on I'm finding the fasting easier. What works for me is not to have breakfast but to have a sachet of miso soup mid pm. The majority of cals I eat at dinner. On the NF days I eat as normal but I'm mindful of not eating junk/empty calories. I feel sort of spaced out on FDs. Like a mild hangover would be the way I could describe it. I'm pleased I can see results and I plan to continue until I get to my target weight - not sure what that is exactly - maybe around 9 1/2 stone. I dont want to look too scrawny given my age. My major issue was my stomach which honestly made me look pregnant. Look forward to hearing how you are all doing with this!

badkitty · 26/06/2024 14:51

I'm on my second FD a of the week today. For those who have been eating this way for a little while, how long did it take before you saw actual results? I feel like my stomach should be literally melting away before my eyes and am a bit miffed that it isn't (yes I know I'm being ridiculous!). I am 5.5 and 10.4 stone, need to get down to 9.2 at least.

Whatapickle78 · 27/06/2024 07:22

Hi @Liz2022 its great to hear your experience! Hope you continue to see such good progress.

Hi @badkitty good luck with your second fast day. Im only on FD 4 but yes, have seen tiny bit of visible reduction in tummy (think it’s bloating that is going, as I’ve almost completely stopped my bad habits of late evening snacking/eating - and drinking much more water.)

Right - aiming to stay under 600 today to make my goal a bit more realistic for me today.

SydneyCarton · 27/06/2024 10:04

Finished on 803 for yesterday - took DD1 to a school open evening and it went on and on and on.... which was handy for fasting as I was knackered by the time we got back and had very little energy or time to eat before bed. That said, I could have been a bit more restrained Grin

strangerInStrangeLand · 27/06/2024 10:27

Hello fellow fasters! good luck! I will be joining in for fast day 2 today!! May be 500 cals as I m not feeling upto doing a water fast.

Tinybigtanya · 27/06/2024 13:37

This is not as hard as I thought it would be. But, MFP shouts at me on fast days for not eating enough, lol.

OohMrDarcy · 28/06/2024 07:11

Morning all

Checking in for a Friday FD planning a chicken / salad combo this evening
@Tinybigtanya apparently it doesn't do that with premium, but it annoys me - I just don't hit the button to complete the day on FD!

Tinybigtanya · 28/06/2024 15:40

Lost over 4 pounds this week but I know that’s not average. Just back from a holiday where I really indulged. Still, it’s not been nearly as hard as I thought. I’m so in the habit of topping myself up with food all day. I actually feel fine when I don’t do that. I’m staying away from the gym and heavy exercise on FD though.

OohMrDarcy · 28/06/2024 19:28

Kitchen closed on 489

Congratulations @Tinybigtanya

Cherryblossom81 · 30/06/2024 19:31

Hi all. I've been considering trying 5:2. I'm at a 'healthy' weight but feel/look better around 7 pounds lighter.

I'm quite short, weigh 8st2, but carry all my extra pounds on my stomach. I've been tracking on Nutracheck and sticking to 1200 calories but not losing any pounds yet. I'm quite active - walk 20,000 step a day and do other exercise. I'm struggling to know why I'm not losing, so wondered if 5:2 might mix things up a bit for me.

I have a few questions:

  1. Do you think 5:2 could help, given all my info above?
  1. How many calories do you all aim for on your fasting days and want do you typically eat on those days?
  1. Do you have top tips for getting enough protein and fibre on fasting days?
