Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Yes - the sight of the garden and woodlands coming to life has been a real boost. I’m really enjoying a daily walk in nature.

harriethoyle · 24/02/2025 09:44

Morning all! @OohMrDarcy @Darker lovely uplifting posts 😀I'm fuming because despite a week of real virtue (save for Sat night and even then I was only 600 cals over my daily deficit average is that makes sense) the scales have leapt back up to where they were last Monday 😩Have taken the dog out for an early stroppy stomp and concentrating on consistency and not throwing it all away by falling into the cake tin/cheese barrel/wine fridge which is what I feel like doing! 😆

PT tonight so I've made a big protein heavy salad for lunch and then fishcake for tea. I'm doing a b2b with minis today and tomorrow because of the gym. We'll see if it bears fruit! Birthday at the end of the week so I already know the weekend's a write off...

If you are doing a lot of exercise and training I imagine you are building muscle, which won’t help with the scales but doesn’t mean you are not losing fat. Do you feel your body is changing shape and tone?

aberjenagain · 24/02/2025 09:57

Ooh, well done @Darker and @OohMrDarcy

FD here. Succumbed to wine yesterday 😁 Scales on Saturday were down 0.6 lb since previous weigh-in ~11 days ago 😐 Semi expected after losing fairly rapidly in the first few weeks, but still annoying!

harriethoyle · 24/02/2025 11:29

I definitely have weight to lose @Darker but I've just measured my waist (which I measured at the start of this process) and I've lost an inch off it, so I am getting smaller. Would just like the scales to reflect the virtue! 😂

OP posts:
Darker · 24/02/2025 12:08

An inch off your waist is brilliant!

aberjenagain · 24/02/2025 13:13

Missed your update @harriethoyle , lovely NSV, and how is the PT going? I made it to a gym induction but half term etc scuppered me doing anything else - hoping to get a session in tomorrow or Wednesday.

harriethoyle · 24/02/2025 14:11

Thanks @Darker and @aberjenagain - regardless of the scale fury, I am definitely enjoy getting more movement into my life and that was the long term goal so I just have to keep my eyes on the broader picture and not tantrum about the short term 😂

Kitchen closing on 755 and back tomorrow for another FD and another gym session!

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 24/02/2025 21:43

Kitchen closed on around 600 today. Happy with that. Nearly perfect but added in a coffee and a biscuit to help me make it.

Next FD is Wednesday when I'm making a chilli for dinner so I'll have that without the rice

eekwhatnow · 24/02/2025 22:49

Kitchen closed on 634 and feel pleased as it was a tough day. Kept imagining an inch off my own waist to see me through!

harriethoyle · 25/02/2025 07:00

Had a scale whoosh this morning with 0.9kg off overnight which has reassured me 🤣 although I’ve woken up with an absolutely stinking cold 😭 genuinely tempted to
have a sick day I feel so awful…

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 25/02/2025 19:33

scales down 1kg this morning too @harriethoyle - always a nice boost after a break

hope you're resting and feeling better soon

harriethoyle · 25/02/2025 19:53

Whoop whoop @OohMrDarcy !

Took the day off in the end, I felt so rotten and I’ve spent it between bed and sofa and feeling a bit better, thank you ☺️

OP posts:
Darker · 25/02/2025 20:10

Well done! 1 kg is fantastic

Darker · 26/02/2025 07:18

Going in for a FD… haven’t had one for a while so feeling a bit nervous! I’m out most of the day so hoping there will be plenty of distraction when I get food cravings.

OohMrDarcy · 26/02/2025 07:35

Morning all

FD here too @darker

Making a chilli for dinner so I will have mine without rice and I just need to plan my lunch now which I'll do while making said chilli.

@harriethoyle hope you're doing ok this morning after your rest day

harriethoyle · 26/02/2025 08:08

Morning gang, am on the way to work @OohMrDarcy but I feel pretty rubbish 🙈 not going to bother even trying to fast today! But will probably end up doing a mini just in terms of planned meals. Good luck with your FD and you @Darker ☺️

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 26/02/2025 08:25

not fasting sounds sensible @harriethoyle - your body needs fuel when you're run down!

I'm one cup of tea and a glass of water down already here

eekwhatnow · 26/02/2025 08:44

Well done @OohMrDarcy and good luck @Darker.
I'm not weighing myself at the moment as have a lot going on and honestly not sure I could cope with the figure but I have just measured myself, inspired by that 1 inch loss.
Hope you feel better soon @harriethoyle , I'm also poorly but not horrendously so and desperate to get back on track after half term so I'm having a FD but prepared to go over a bit if I need to.

Darker · 26/02/2025 19:03

I was at a work do today but managed to stick to the very nice salad and avoid the trays (and trays) of pastries and pizzas. Virtue is my name.

OohMrDarcy · 26/02/2025 20:36

Kitchen closed on 527 - very happy with that!

Dinners planned for the rest of the week, and a weekend in London ahead so need to be sensible. Luckily the friend I'm going with doesn't drink much and eats well so 🤞🏻

eekwhatnow · 26/02/2025 20:41

Well done!
Kitchen closed on 679 here and I'll take that. Felt absolutely ropey all day and glad to be in bed. So so pleased to have managed the two FD's this week and feel like I'm back on it.

eekwhatnow · 26/02/2025 20:41

Hope you're feeling loads better @harriethoyle

harriethoyle · 26/02/2025 21:05

Thanks all. I’m under a blanket and I’m wfh tomorrow so I really hope I can shake this thing off before the weekend!
