Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Monday’s FD was a bit of a wash out but I managed to come in around 1100 cals so not all in vain. Tuesday’s food choices weren’t great but I did a 16:8 on Wednesday and came in 200 calories under. Today is my second FD and I’m on about 400 at the moment; heading off to Brownies in a minute which should keep me out of the biscuit tin. Might have a protein yogurt later if I’m hungry which will take me to around 550 for the day.

Finished yesterday on 594 - had the protein yoghurt and a handful of Maltesers.

Absolute hero @aberjenagain doing a Friday fast! I’m currently debating whether to be booze free tonight because we have an alcohol laden weekend but no way could I fast too 🤣

I’ve pretty much knocked alcohol on the head. I miss it occasionally when I’m stressed and I do look forward to having a glass of wine with friends when the occasion arises, but I’ve got used to having just water or fruit tea in the evening. I have previously had quite an unhealthy relationship with alcohol.

Well done @Darker I'm pretty sure alcohol is at the root of a lot of my poor food choices!

Yesterday‘s FD all done on 525. I quite like a Friday FD, stops things going too haywire over the weekend 😁 My end of the week, TFI Friday drinking was also getting a bit too much for my liking, and the Friday FDs have knocked that on the head. Having said that, think I will switch to Thursdays soon as will probably restart swimming on a Friday and that makes me far too hungry to fast as well.

Interesting @Darker and @aberjenagain I’m also making a conscious choice to limit my drinking. Only at the weekends now unless it’s a special occasion and much less on Sunday than I used to drink. My hangovers are so much worse than they used to be…

Steak was fine… I didn’t eat anything all day so I was very hungry by the time we ate.

Today I’m cooking… same deal, trying not to eat during the day. I might have tomorrow to myself in which case I’ll to get a proper fast day in.

Alcohol is not helpful for dieting. When I drink wine I’m always hungry in the morning and crave sugar. It’s also quite calorific in its own right.

Morning all

Back from my jaunt in London. Had a really lovely weekend. Didn't eat too badly (definitely could have been worse!) and didn't end up drinking either .. walked over 22 miles exploring London in the early spring sunshine!

Checking in for my Monday reset FD. Have some soup to take out of the freezer and need to work out what else I'm having but all good

Good luck today! I'm in for a FD too.
Also stoped being a baby and weighed myself as think it'll make me more accountable. It's the non FDs I'm having trouble with. Determined to see some weight off this time next week 🤞.
Gorgeous sunny weekend even though still very congested. Curry and quiz night fundraiser with friends on Saturday and lovely bike ride with the family on Sunday. So glad this sun is going to hang around a bit.

Kitchen closed on 600 plus 3 mini eggs. Happy with that considering the desperate need for a good shop where I was away all weekend!

Checking in for Wednesday FD here.

Have Cesar salad for lunch and a small portion of Bolognese (no pasta) for dinner which leaves enough cals that I can also have one of my latte sachets

I'm in for FD2. Had a good NFD yesterday despite my DH's unhelpful new passion for bread baking.
I'll have a boiled egg at lunch, sip on miso soup and snack on salad through the day. Then I have some of those Barenaked noodles with tomato sauce and broccoli for supper. Plus milk for tea and a biscuit before bed.
