Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Who's joining me on a fd tomorrow? I have a work lunch but it's a buffet so I'm going to skip breakfast, eat minimally and then have a light supper... 😬

Thank you @harriethoyle. Flowers

It feels very emotional to be on thread 100 and at goal weight.

I’m relying on you lovely lot to keep me on track so I can maintain!

harriethoyle · 03/04/2023 08:09

3kg up on the scales since Friday! 🤯let's hope that's booze bloat... definitely skipping work lunch and making today a true fast day 🤣🙈

Yay for thread 100!!! Wonder if anyone from the earlier threads still checks in here, I only joined in November 2021.

Hope your weight gain is just some fluids @harriethoyle!

Here for day 1 B2B, once again not really expecting to lose any weight as unable to do a day 3 this week, have guests coming over in a couple of days for almost a week!!! 😮

I do however have a plan now how to tackle my lack of weight loss. I have been dreading this but can't deny it anymore; I have to give up bread.😢I have no issues saying no to cake but I love bread, especially sourdough, and I tend to have it with some butter and a big chunk of cheddar to make things worse. When you actually work how many calories it can add in a day it's quite frightening, it can exceed 1000!!!
Not starting quite yet though, have a work trip coming up after the Easter holiday and will start my new bread-free life when I return, together with more exercise. May treat myself to a new garmin watch to motivate myself..

Good luck today everyone!

harriethoyle · 03/04/2023 09:28

@EatYourFive we're definitely 5:2 twins. I also have guests arriving on Tuesday for a week and I also ADORE bread and lose weight far more effectively when I limit or skip it. Howl! 🤣

First FD of the week and using my new username on this shiny new thread (was @hohoholdthesherry ).

@Onehappymam so fantastic! Make sure you stick around to inspire the rest of us 😀

@harriethoyle when I had a bad week last month I went up 3 kg on the scales, but went straight back down after my first FD so hopefully it'll be the same for you.

@EatYourFive bread is such a temptation and so many calories come from what we put on it - definitely an Achilles heel for me too 😏I did low carb for a couple of years and once into it, I didn't even miss bread so I hope it'll be the same for you (I only stopped because of a sudden bereavement and now my brain - which likes to sabotage me - seems to associate the two 🙄).

I have tendinitis in my right shoulder from compensating for my broken hand and torn tendon on the left ... I'm feeling pretty glum but trying for once not to make it an excuse not to fast!

I do have to be out from 4 til 8 today, so I can't decide if I should eat at 3.30 or at 8. The former, I might end up snacking later, the latter, I might end up at the bakery when I'm out ...

harriethoyle · 03/04/2023 10:00

Ooof that's a tough window @Trickedbyadoughnut - could you take a packed tea ie salad etc and eat on the go?

OP posts:
Trickedbyadoughnut · 03/04/2023 10:04

A bit awkward, but it might be possible, thanks for the idea!

EatYourFive · 03/04/2023 17:58

Haha yes @harriethoyle we really are Fast Twins!! I'm going to make the most of my remaining bread-eating days and then take maybe a two month break and see how it goes..

So how are today's fasters getting on? I had to work from home but have managed to avoid snacking, looking forward to some light dinner.

harriethoyle · 03/04/2023 18:40

Kitchen closing here on 606 calories. Back tomorrow for day 2!

OP posts:
Trickedbyadoughnut · 03/04/2023 19:53

Done on 820, a bit high, but fine if I do a B2B - if not I'll try three FDs.

EatYourFive · 03/04/2023 20:11

Kitchen closed at 480 here, back for day 2 tomorrow. Well done fasters!

harriethoyle · 04/04/2023 08:07

Morning gang! Who's with me... a kg of bloat off overnight, thank goodness 🤣

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 04/04/2023 09:06

Well done @harriethoyle! I'm checking in for today, feeling strong!!

TeaRose29 · 04/04/2023 09:59

Just checking in today. It’s really nice to have a gang to chat with. I’m a bit fed up. I’m up 2 pounds. I haven’t been overeating but I think it’s because I’ve had more carbs than usual, so I hope it’s water weight. I’ve got a horrible cold and I’ve had rather a stressful couple of work days (including Sunday). Anyway, I feel a bit better today, no more work until after Easter, and my daughter is back from uni, which is lovely. After Easter I’m going to jump back on the Dukan diet, which always works brilliantly for me, plus do a couple of FDs and get back in the gym. And finally the sun is shining! Good luck today, fasters!

harriethoyle · 04/04/2023 13:38

@TeaRose29 are you still having periods? I have just realised my period is due on Thursday and I ALWAYS retain water weight just beforehand. Am mightily relieved I haven't actually put on 3kg in 3 days...!! Drink lots of water and keep moving and it'll come off lickety split.

Unexpectedly working from home today but have had a mega productive day so far. Both bathrooms washed, kitchen floor scrubbed (properly hands and knees scrubbed!), washing done and dried, big Easter shop done... Feeling very productive! Have just had a tuna salad rather than a tuna thin sandwich, which was lovely and hopefully lack of bready carbs will help tomorrow morning too.

May also have bough hot cross buns for tomorrow's breakfast...!!

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 04/04/2023 14:02

@harriethoyle no, am post-menopausal. Don’t miss those buggers either! I’ve just played tennis and will do gym and/or a long walk with my fitness-mad daughter tomorrow. Sadly some hot cross buns also made their way into my shopping this morning! Blush

harriethoyle · 04/04/2023 14:07

@TeaRose29 oh well. It'll definitely be water weight! Too much salt maybe?

It's a glorious day here... I'm off out with the dogs I think to make the most of the sunshine then I'm going to read my book!

harriethoyle · 04/04/2023 20:29

Kitchen closing on 755 after an emergency mid-afternoon ryvita... I was starving!!

1361 for the b2b. In laws have descended with ARMFULS of food, pies, cheeses, lovely bread... tomorrow's mini will be very tough 🙈 I've already given in to Thursday's dinner out suggestion because they looked so disappointed about tomorrow's mini 🤣

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 04/04/2023 21:39

Well done @harriethoyle! Kitchen closed at 700 here, pleased with that. No plans for further fasting now until after Easter, the guests are arriving tomorrow and I'm sure the next few days will include a lot of food and wine over here as well!!

TeaRose29 · 05/04/2023 10:36

Well done @harriethoyle and @EatYourFive . Looks like my gain was water weight! Yesterday was effectively OMAD - I had a sausage sandwich Blush at about 2pm, but nothing before or after, and am down 1.5 pounds this morning, so very pleased with that. Will be happy if I can maintain over Easter, then back on it next week.

harriethoyle · 05/04/2023 11:06

Oh good @TeaRose29 that's a relief. I thought it would be!

@EatYourFive I'm going to skip breakfast tomorrow to limit the Easter damage but already know I'm on a losing streak! My in laws are FEEDERS 🤣

OP posts:
FlightDeckBuckarooo · 05/04/2023 21:37

Hi.
can I join you all? I’ve lost over 2 stone recently, but I’m losing focus now so could do with checking in somewhere. I’ve lost some but not all of the weight through fasting - but it’s definitely the way I can see myself losing my last stone and also maintaining.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 06/04/2023 07:49

@FlightDeckBuckarooo welcome 😁 Two stone is fantastic! I have definitely found posting to help with accountability.

And on that note, anyone fasting today? My second of the week and I definitely need this one.

harriethoyle · 06/04/2023 10:16

Welcome @FlightDeckBuckarooo - come and join the gang! Although I confess I am mainly going to be eating hot cross buns and easter eggs until Tuesday so may not be the best example...

I'm not fasting @Trickedbyadoughnut but may have persuaded my (very sweet but massive feeders!) in laws that we don't need to go out for dinner tonight when we are also going out tomorrow night for DSD's birthday. So I have saved myself a good few calories if I've convinced them...!!
