Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Good luck mopsy are you fasting today?

Thank you 😊
I did manage a fast day yesterday! - probably not perfect, but pretty sure it was around 500/600 calories.

FlightDeckBuckarooo · 17/04/2023 07:48

Morning.
I got back from visiting relatives late last night. Am up 2lb this morning - not surprised at all as I ate very badly (various reasons from lack of choice, emotional eating etc).
anyway I’m back home now and also back to work after 2 weeks off. I’m going to draw a line under the eating and gain back the momentum I had before. it’s my birthday in 3 weeks and I was hoping to be in the next stone bracket by then. 2 weeks of small losses followed by gains has made that less likely but not totally impossible.
I have soup and carrot sticks for my lunch, and fish and green veg for dinner. And coffee.

Good luck everyone today - especially @harriethoyle with the tiredness! I managed to get a train back last night, but my original plan until yesterday was to get the red eye back this morning. Not a fun experience!

summersanchez · 17/04/2023 07:54

Brilliant mopsy well done

TeaRose29 · 17/04/2023 10:22

Also a bad start to my day: was meant to be on an 8.30 Teams call so got up extra-early (for me 😬) but the system wouldn’t let me in for some reason 🤨. We are going to see Fran Liebowitz tonight so will need to eat early which might work ok. Sorry to hear about your travel problems @harriethoyle , how miserable for you ☹️.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 17/04/2023 11:39

Hello all! I only managed one FD and a mini last week, so I'm planning on doing three FDs this week as we'll be off on holiday next week so I need it. I've got all my food and drinks with me, which always helps.

@MopsySmithe welcome to the thread and congratulations on yesterday's fast - can't believe you managed a weekend day!

@FlightDeckBuckarooo you sound well prepared - I find it helps so much!

@TeaRose29 sorry about your meeting, but sounds like your day will end better.

Good luck to all fasters!

Thelongdarkteatime · 17/04/2023 20:46

Please can I join? I’ve been doing calorie counting/weight watchers since January and my weight loss has been very very slow (despite upping my exercise). I had some success with 5:2 a number of years ago and am hoping this might jump start my metabolism again (I’m 39, have had 3dc and seem to be just holding onto weight!)

I did my first fast day today ending on 508 calories and it was ok. I am slightly worried that eating ‘normally’ at TDEE the other days is a recipe for weight gain after spending so long counting and restricting but I’m going to try and trust the process and give it a go.

Im planning my next fast day as Thursday and would love people to chat to about what I’m doing.

harriethoyle · 18/04/2023 08:18

Morning all and welcome @Thelongdarkteatime (great user name!). Ask any questions you like, we're a friendly lot 😊

After yesterday's travel snafu, I'm back in the hot seat and fasting today and tomorrow. Anyone joining me?

I’m planning a pretty active day of tennis then gardening if the weather is ok, so I might try a repeat of yesterday (basically a mini with IF) which went really well. I had Greek yogurt with toasted almonds and rosewater (tastes like Turkish delight!) at 10.30, then at 5pm (before we went out) I had a 3-egg omelette with cheese and a protein shake. Felt totally stuffed, even at bedtime, although it was only about 800 calories. Weighed myself this morning and I have dropped 1.5 pounds, so am now at a new lowest recent weight. I’m thrilled! I know a lot of it will be water loss, due to low carb/high protein, but I’m taking it!

Good luck today @harriethoyle , now that you are back in the saddle!

harriethoyle · 18/04/2023 10:21

Hurrah @TeaRose29 that's a great SV! Omelettes are a great bang for your calorie buck choice, eggs generally in fact I think. Might have one for Thursday night's mini tea now!

Fasting today and tomorrow after taking last week off for Easter - definitely starting to feel a bit podgy at the moment, so need to properly track calories on NFDs as it seems to be the only thing which really works for me. Tea and water all day, then quiche and salad for dinner after children's swimming lesson

summersanchez · 18/04/2023 13:29

Great planning

harriethoyle · 18/04/2023 17:06

How are you getting on @SydneyCarton ? I'm hungry but have been very busy at work which always helps...

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 18/04/2023 19:32

Kitchen closed here on 646. Same planned for tomorrow!

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 18/04/2023 20:32

Going well thanks @harriethoyle.Kitchen closed on 668 (went slightly over the 650 for a b2b for the sake of a bit of Easter egg). I am definitely not drinking enough water, which is unlike me, but I made an effort to chug down nearly 4 litres yesterday and 3 today. Just looked in the mirror as I took my makeup off and was pleasantly surprised by how healthy my skin looked, which I’m putting down to the extra hydration!

harriethoyle · 19/04/2023 09:22

Day 2 of b2b for me today. Exactly the same menu planned as yesterday so should come in at the same cals... (although might add some sweetcorn to my veg. We'll see.)

OP posts:
Trickedbyadoughnut · 19/04/2023 09:37

@harriethoyle "I'll just add some sweetcorn" is a regular FD phrase here 😆

Fasting today, not my usual day, but I'm in the office, which I find easier. And possibly a B2B with tomorrow as DH is away all day - which also helps!

TeaRose29 · 19/04/2023 09:48

Another 1/2 off this morning - I’m astounded! Yesterday I had yogurt and a protein shake at about 11am, and then grilled salmon and asparagus at about 6pm. Just had tea during the day. I also had a couple of glasses of wine Blush, as we went to the pub last night, but the whole lot only came in at around 1000 cals. I had also done quite a strenous weights workout in the gym, as my tennis was cancelled. I didn’t feel hungry at all. I’m going to do more or less the same thing today and see what happens.

I have now lost 9 pounds in 3 months - I started mid-January. This is a good rate for me, as I only had about a stone to lose, and I was stuck on a plateau for weeks. I’m really thrilled! I’m going to try to drink more plain water today, as suggested by @SydneyCarton . Good luck to Syndey and @harriethoyle and any other fasters today!

harriethoyle · 19/04/2023 16:25

Fab @TeaRose29 Great that this way of life is working so well for you!

@Trickedbyadoughnut I find wfh fasting SO tricky particularly if it's not a busy day...much prefer an office based fast day!

Kitchen closing on 694 because of added sweetcorn but I'm still STARVING... 😭

summersanchez · 19/04/2023 19:40

I'm working tomorrow and will have a OMAD

SydneyCarton · 19/04/2023 20:56

Kitchen closed on 689; homemade chilli from the freezer, rice and a banana. Could probably have made do without the banana but I really wanted something sweet. 1353 for the b2b, pleased with that. Plus I’ve kept up with the water and logged 4 litres today. Well done @harriethoyle and good luck for tomorrow @summersanchez

summersanchez · 19/04/2023 21:06

Totally hear you about sweetness
