Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Morning @harriethoyle. I'm doing TDEE today as have got an office away day where there will be pizza 😬

FD tomorrow so at least I'll be well set up for it.

I am curious to know what types of foods people eat on fast days. I will list mine and if people want to maybe they could list their own and we can inspire each other
I tend to eat:

Prawns - loads of protein very low calorie
Air-fried / steamed non starchy veg
Cottage cheese, ( natural rather that the low fat type)
Chilli / garlic / ginger / herbs etc make low calorie food more satisfying
I used to use low cal cooking spray but find cooking with tiny, weighed out bit of butter makes food much more satisfying for hardly any extra calories
Veg / chickpea based curries (no rice)
Boiled eggs
Portioned out cheese (like babybel or cheddar sticks) are easy to just grab and eat
Ham slices
Cherry tomatoes
Bags of pre-made leafy salads

JemimaFuddle · 04/01/2024 11:49

Fasting today and my period is due on Monday so I am obsessing about food :-(

harriethoyle · 04/01/2024 13:04

Welcome @JemimaFuddle! As I posted up thread, I am very boring on FD. Have the same things in rotation. Lunch almost inevitably a tuna light mayo thin (those square bread things) and dinner is either baked breaded fish with stirfry veg, spinach and ricotta canneloni (aldi) or courgetti with a tomato sauce. Sometimes I will make a big pot of chilli, with extra lean beef mince, and have that on broccoli rather than rice but rarely. I just find not having to think about fast meals helps me stay on the straight and narrow!

JemimaFuddle · 04/01/2024 15:05

@harriethoyle you have already inspired me! I have a spiraliser so could make courgetti and have with a tomato sauce and basil sauce and maybe even have enough calories left over for a bit of mozzerella!

Talkinpeace · 04/01/2024 15:15

If you are adding cheese, make it S T R O N G
as then a little bit of flavour goes a long way
I'm a big fan of a few chilli flakes or a grind of fresh pepper
as a flavour blast makes you feel fuller quicker

JemimaFuddle · 04/01/2024 20:19

Finished up on about 750 tonight. More than I'd planned but my period is due and I'd normally be stuffing my face with crisps and chips so I'm taking it as a win!

JemimaFuddle · 05/01/2024 11:32

I'd lose 2.2lbs at this mornings weigh in which I'm pretty chuffed about.

berryhand · 05/01/2024 11:39

Great work @JemimaFuddle! Good start to the year.

On second FD of the week here. Going ok so far, have had two big mugs of tea and plenty of water.

JemimaFuddle · 05/01/2024 12:11

Thanks @berryhand
I am absolutely ravenous today though as my period is due so will probably put it all back on! Better than it all being gained weight I suppose and perhaps losing water retention will help!

SydneyCarton · 05/01/2024 12:31

Did my first FD of 2024 yesterday - bit of a mixed bag. Kept stocked up with water and tea for most of the day, but ended up eating more than anticipated for dinner. It was lovely though - chicken salad and air fried sauté potatoes. Came in at 1200 (a Crunchie stolen from the DCs selection box may have had something to do with this Hmm) so bit more than a mini, but definitely less than my daily intake over the last few weeks....

harriethoyle · 05/01/2024 14:48

My mini yesterday had precisely NO effect on the scales this morning 😜And we go away tomorrow for a fortnight skiing... the food is hearty, delicious and absolutely not conducive to weight loss or even maintenance. Ho hum!! I will try my best to resist a full cooked lunch every day and aim to limit the apres ski but I suspect the reality is that I will be back here doing 3FD a week at the end of the month, in an attempt to get the holiday heft off! 😆🙀

OP posts:
JemimaFuddle · 05/01/2024 14:52

@harriethoyle Life is far to short to resist delicious food while on holiday. Skiing must burn a far few calories anyway!

Have a lovely time.

harriethoyle · 05/01/2024 15:05

The amount of time I spend struggling to get back up MUST burn some calories @JemimaFuddle !

I know this is MUCH TOO MUCH information for a Friday night
but
those who have had their kids and find period timings mess up eating and weight
do, please, consider a Mirena coil
its a game change for many users

distrussful · 05/01/2024 19:36

Have a lovely hol @harriethoyle - you can fast when you're back, life's too short! I've finished today's fast, in bed on a Friday night at 7.30, rock and roll. Was having a super healthy week until accidentally falling into some wine last night but onwards! Hope everyone has a relaxing weekend

berryhand · 05/01/2024 20:56

Have a great hol @harriethoyle and yes enjoy yourself!

@distrussful I also fell into a glass of red last night, no idea how it happened. But finishing today on 520 so pretty happy with that.

@Talkinpeace I'm on the waiting list for a coil but it's a three month wait around here! Very annoying

Talkinpeace · 06/01/2024 14:52

For anybody with a long memory, BigChocFrenzy sends her best wishes.
She is still fasting a bit and going to the gym a lot !

distrussful · 08/01/2024 12:02

Lovely to hear re bigchocfrenzy! First fast of the week here, didn't have a healthy weekend so am trying to limit the damage. And have roped in my husband to be more supportive / hopefully help me to stop going crazy on the off days.

thatsahardno · 08/01/2024 13:21

Ah I still miss @bigchocfrenzy, her immense wisdom and calming serenity!

berryhand · 08/01/2024 13:41

First FD of the week here too, went out for dinner last night so definitely did not stay within calorie budgets 😬

JemimaFuddle · 08/01/2024 14:30

I'm fasting too. I went to the gym at lunch and have so far had lots of miso soup and herbal tea. I'm feeling pretty ravenous though! Trying to distract myself.

sweetgingercat · 08/01/2024 17:55

Hi all, back again for the first fast of 2024! I’ve been off munching for a lot of last year and I’m back with my tail between my legs 😏. Today has gone well with an apple and a cup of miso so far… best wishes and good luck everyone…

berryhand · 08/01/2024 21:24

Kitchen closing on 514 so pretty happy with that. Have lost 2kg in the last week too.

JemimaFuddle · 08/01/2024 23:04

I'm all done on 581 for today.
I've promised myself scrambled eggs on toast tomorrow which I am very much looking forward to!
