Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I’m not sure what my final numbers were last night because when I came down to make supper I found my 0H had already made a salad for me just how he knows I like it. It was really nice of him and it did not seem too oily. But it was impossible to count the calories!

SydneyCarton · 09/01/2024 13:33

FD today as I'm in the office, tea and water only so far. Think I might do a prawn stir fry for dinner as there's a bit of veg that needs using up

distrussful · 09/01/2024 13:56

I completely failed yesterday so have restarted today - had a big salad for lunch and have protein yogurt thing planned for when I get home! Good luck everyone

Talkinpeace · 09/01/2024 20:53

Did not fast yesterday (good reason)
getting back on track
feeling healthier

distrussful · 10/01/2024 06:08

Managed yesterday - B2B today - anyone else fasting?
@Talkinpeace glad you're feeling more on track - I feel the same, back in the gym and mostly off the booze has worked wonders.

Sunshineofyourlove · 10/01/2024 07:40

Morning all, I will eat lunch at 1pm and that will br a 16 hour overnight fast. I am also doing a restricted calorie day today. In the past I've had success with 2 FD a week, plus a long overnight fast. But its tough to get back into.

Question: I seem to remember a figure of 50cals as being ok to have without breaking a fast but I can't remember how I know this! 50cals would allow splashes of oat milk in tea which would be great. Does anyone know if it's correct?

Beautiful3 · 10/01/2024 20:54

Hi everyone, I went missing for a year, but did calorie counting instead, which was good. I'm back as I need a boost to lose more. Did 2 back to backs, yesterday was 650, and today closed at 620. Looking forward to having a treat tomorrow! Happy new year everyone 🎆

berryhand · 11/01/2024 11:48

Morning all, seems like everyone is in a bit of a groove now. FD for me today, just had two thins with tuna and fat free yog, sea salt, pepper and crushed chilli.

Planning air fried chicken breast and broccoli for tea again.

distrussful · 11/01/2024 15:05

Amazing to have a back to back buddy @Beautiful3 !! Which days do you usually do ?

JemimaFuddle · 11/01/2024 15:29

I'm also fasting today.
Had some cottage cheese just now and I'll be making a spicy prawn and veg miso soup later on.

Beautiful3 · 11/01/2024 16:28

@distrussful yay it's nice to have a buddy. I used to do 2 b2b between monday-wednesday to get them out of the way. This week, I chose my busiest days, so I wouldn't think about food. Are your set days Tuesday and Wednesday?

sweetgingercat · 11/01/2024 17:43

I'm fasting today as well. I've come back to fasting after a bit of a break, before I used to do a b2b on Monday and Tuesday and a third day on Thursday. I'd like to do that again if I can...

distrussful · 11/01/2024 19:39

@Beautiful3 I'm the same as you! ideally I just do Monday - Tuesday but I always aim to be done by Weds. sometimes if I'm alone and can hack it, I'll go Sunday Monday even. Thursday everything starts to unravel re social life kicking in and work drinks etc!

JemimaFuddle · 12/01/2024 09:20

1.2 lbs down this morning which is a total loss of 3.4 lbs.

TeaRose29 · 12/01/2024 10:09

Had a tricky start to the year, as was overwhelmed with work and couldn’t even get to shops for food (DH can’t be trusted not to come back with pies 🤣), so was running on Christmas/NY leftovers. Anyway, had my first FD yesterday. Protein shake for brunch and prawns in yogurt with a bit of mayo for dinner. 3/4 pound off this morning! Might go for 800 today as am playing tennis.

berryhand · 12/01/2024 13:03

Excellent SVs guys! I am on a non FD today and intend to make the most of it with a takeaway later

Onehappymam · 13/01/2024 12:29

Had so much enthusiasm the first week of January, but this week I’ve felt completely overwhelmed being back at work and all the kids’ activities starting up again.

Doing a b2b this weekend to compensate for all the crap I’ve eaten through the week!

On the plus side, I’ve managed to stick to dry January! Dread to think what my eating would have been like if I was still drinking. Blush

Beautiful3 · 14/01/2024 09:43

@Onehappymam Do you think it's harder to fast over the weekend? I could never do it when my family's here. All the food i prepare would go in my mouth! I find Monday to Wednesdays easier, and it's out of the way.

ilovebagpuss · 14/01/2024 10:44

Morning, hope it's ok to pop on this lovely friendly thread. I often read for inspiration but am starting back on 5:2 as I have found it helpful in the past.
Menopause and belly fat and plodding towards pre-diabetes has made me have another go. I really would like to have it as part of my lifestyle as I have read of the many benefits.
I am pretty happy with the way it works and what I can eat etc.
I think I will weigh once a week as even a small loss spurs me on.

berryhand · 14/01/2024 13:47

Welcome @ilovebagpuss, I have found this thread so helpful!

@Onehappymam @Beautiful3 I would also find it impossible over the weekend. Doing a FD tomorrow, considering a b2b on Thurs and Friday also, I'll see how I get on.

@harriethoyle are you back from hols yet? Hope you've had a great time

harriethoyle · 14/01/2024 14:00

Still skiing @berryhand... I'll do a new thread now though!
