Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

A victory there @harriethoyle😃

FlightDeckBuckarooo · 06/04/2023 11:15

Thanks for the welcome.
@Trickedbyadoughnut (great name!) I’m fasting today. Although I did have a cup of coffee with milk first thing when I was still on autopilot. What’s your food plan today? I’m thinking some sort of egg based lunch and tandoori prawns for dinner.

@harriethoyle I hope you have managed to convince them. I'm visiting feeder relatives next weekend so I feel your pain!

harriethoyle · 06/04/2023 11:37

I may have fallen face first into a slice of Colin the Caterpillar cake... a snaxident?!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 06/04/2023 13:38

@harriethoyle ah, that irresistible little rogue!

@FlightDeckBuckarooo yay, another faster today! I pretty much always do one meal on a FD. DH made his light veggie lasagne (just veg in a spicy tomato sauce and sheets of pasta), so I'll work out how much of that I can have with poached eggs for extra protein. We're going out at 6, so probably have that about 5 and I'm about to have half a stock as "tea" to keep me going.

FlightDeckBuckarooo · 07/04/2023 09:25

Morning!
Ive not tried 1 meal a day yet. I think I’ll give it a go when the weather gets a bit warmer.

I had a vaguely successful fast day yesterday. I kept within my window, but I had a different evening meal to what I had planned which was more calorific. (I have some Gousto meal boxes to eat from an order that I forgot to cancel.) but I skipped the carbs and made extra veg so it was healthy.

Definitely not a fast day today - I’m out for both lunch and dinner - but I think they’ll both be fairly healthy meals.

Im not sure when my next fast day will be. I might be able to squeeze one in tomorrow. After that I think it’ll be Tuesday and Wednesday. I’m off to visit my feeder family on Friday.

harriethoyle · 10/04/2023 20:41

Who's joining me tomorrow in an attempt to undo the no doubt horrific Easter damage?! 😬🙈

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 11/04/2023 13:09

How are you getting on @harriethoyle? Hope you had a nice time with your guests over the bank holiday weekend. I am exhausted, wasn't able to fast today. Also haven't been brave enough to step on the scales yet, will be fasting tomorrow though.

harriethoyle · 11/04/2023 14:05

Fricking starving @EatYourFive !!!

Already dreaming of teatime's baked fish and broccoli... Sad but true!

OP posts:
FlightDeckBuckarooo · 11/04/2023 14:28

I’m sort of fasting today.
Ive had a small lunch and will be having an early dinner as I’m out later. It’s not going to be super low cal today (around 800cal) as I’ve got a late night and want to avoid being hungry with nothing but poor food choice. So not strictly by-the-book fasting, but good enough to break the Easter over indulgence!
I’ll do another fast tomorrow too.

Good luck today @harriethoyle

EatYourFive · 11/04/2023 18:58

How was your fish and broccoli @harriethoyle? Well done for fasting today! You too @FlightDeckBuckarooo, I was meant to fast today but gave up before I even got started! But tomorrow is a new day, anyone joining me?

harriethoyle · 11/04/2023 19:53

Kitchen closed here on 633. Slightly winging it tomorrow as we have leftovers which will make a risotto but shouldn't take me above 700 for the day I hope...

Hi all
Loving the inspirational accounts here, thank you for sharing
I was attempting (failing but not eating as much as I often do) OMAD last week but now I'm back at work it's easier
Total clean fast yesterday (36 hours so far) and feeling brilliant
I am to eat supper tonight at 6 ish🤞

summersanchez · 12/04/2023 07:48

It's a bit like quitting drinking. Definitely feel better for it but sometimes want to kill for a drink/ biscuit 😬

harriethoyle · 12/04/2023 09:07

Anyone else with me and @summersanchez today? I'm unexpectedly working from home which is great but makes fasting FAR more difficult... 😣

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 12/04/2023 09:51

I’m planning either FD or mini today, depending how I feel. I was up 1 1/2 yesterday, but I’ve just weighed myself and that has come staight off after a good (but not FD) yesterday! I’m just 1/2 a pound off my lowest recent weight, so want to push for that today. Want to make progress instead of losing a couple of pounds then putting them back on! Good luck @harriethoyle and @summersanchez !

FlightDeckBuckarooo · 12/04/2023 10:24

I’m on another mini FD today too.
I’m at home again and I find it much harder than when I’m at work, so I’m just aiming for 3 sub 900kcal days in a row this week. Today is day 2.

I’m away for the weekend and will be doing damage limitation as I’m staying with my feeder family. Back at work on Monday.

EatYourFive · 12/04/2023 11:21

I'm fasting today, not sure yet whether I am fasting tomorrow so may be just one day this week. Travelling for work next week so no fasting, but after that I should be able to fast every week until the summer half-term. Planning to quit bread after my work trip to see if it makes a difference, it's a biggie for me as I love bread and it's my favourite snack/comfort food.

summersanchez · 12/04/2023 11:37

Good luck harriet
I find it tough when wfh but such a sense of achievement when I push through- the. It's done isn't it

harriethoyle · 12/04/2023 14:17

@FlightDeckBuckarooo I suspect today and tomorrow will be something similar for me. Currently on 215 and risotto for tea which isn't horrendous but is far more carby than usual FD tea... Will skip breakfast tomorrow so it's an IF at least and the same Friday I think.

OP posts:
Trickedbyadoughnut · 12/04/2023 14:57

@harriethoyle @TeaRose29 @FlightDeckBuckarooo good luck with the fasts and the minis.

I have started and aborted FDs every day this week so far, but in the office tomorrow, which I find much easier, so tomorrow should be my day! I'm very tired with the Ddog getting us up all the time in the night and just craving sugar and carbs.

Onehappymam · 12/04/2023 17:40

Hello everyone!

Welcome @FlightDeckBuckarooo. Great to have another faster on board!

@Trickedbyadoughnut sleep deprivation is a killer! It’s always so tough to fast on broken sleep.

Got back from holiday yesterday. Great to get caught up with the thread. Stepped on the scales first thing (up 7lbs. Hopefully a chunk of that will shift in the next day or two!) and threw myself straight into a FD. The old me would have remained in holiday mode: eating out, getting takeaways and drinking wine, so this is a huge improvement!

So far the holiday laundry has distracted me from my hunger and I’ve managed on black coffee and water.

We’re going away for the weekend, so I need to really knuckle down before then.

harriethoyle · 12/04/2023 20:48

Welcome back @Onehappymam hope you had a fab holiday 😊

I've definitely been closer to a mini than a fast today. DH made a delicious risotto but too big a portion and I couldn't resist it... but going to skip breakfast tomorrow so it's an IF day and same Friday. 3 FDs next week I think 🤞

OP posts:
Onehappymam · 13/04/2023 08:28

2lbs of holiday bloat gone already.

Definitely more of a mini here too @harriethoyle. Had fajitas for dinner then fell into the biscuit tin. At least I didn’t fall into the wine wrack!

Will try another FD today.

harriethoyle · 13/04/2023 08:39

Well done @Onehappymam ! I'm doing another mini today. Currently stoically resisting the amazing bread my mil bought me last week and trying to push through to lunch... baked fish for 250 cals and airport lounge tea trying to resist free booze and cake tonight...

OP posts:
Trickedbyadoughnut · 13/04/2023 09:58

@Onehappymam well done on yesterday, a good result to be done 2 lbs, always encouraging! Good luck today.

@harriethoyle good luck on the mini - resisting delicious bread and having airport lounge tea - you really are taking fasting to the next level.

I AM fasting today. In the office, so it's already easier and I've got my drinks etc. sorted which should help. I weighed this morning and am a kilo up from before Easter weekend (although I thought that might be worse), so I'm feeling more determined today.
