Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Another pound off and back to my lowest recent weight! Yay! Yesterday was a mini, as I was playing tennis and I can’t cope with only 500 calories, but I didn’t eat anything until 3pm, so it was also an IF. Been loading up on 0% Greek yogurt, which I find very filling, and is only about 50 cals for 100g. Made a salad dressing with it last night, with finely sliced celery and a tiny portion of salted peanuts. It was delicious! I’m going to try for around 1200 today, although at the moment I don’t feel hungry. (Slightly put off eating by the huge pile of sick that one of the DCats had left on the stairs overnight 🤣).

Trickedbyadoughnut · 13/04/2023 10:07

@TeaRose29 great result! And so kind of your Dcat to help you on your fasting journey. So selfless 😂

TeaRose29 · 13/04/2023 11:24

And all the cleaning up I’m having to do is burning calories! 🤣🤣

Trickedbyadoughnut · 13/04/2023 11:33

Truly the gift that keeps on giving 😂

harriethoyle · 13/04/2023 12:45

I couldn't resist the bread 🙈 I've put the rest in the freezer!!

Ah @harriethoyle you're still my fasting hero for your airport efforts!

I've just had my tea, which was spicy beef and noodles from the 24/7 place at work. That said 439 calories on it, so I've had a square of my emergency dark chocolate as pud. And hopefully that's me done. Probably going to try a B2B tomorrow, but I'll concentrate on finishing today first!

summersanchez · 13/04/2023 20:19

24 hours
Fast broken with a lemsip, cheese wrap, orange and banana
I like skipping breakfast and lunch but I miss porridge

harriethoyle · 13/04/2023 20:30

I would guestimate I came in at c.1000. Chilli con carne in the lounge and water which felt very saintly 😆 another attempt at an IF tomorrow 🤞

Well done harriet

Onehappymam · 14/04/2023 06:55

That salad dressing sounds so tasty @TeaRose29, but also quick and easy which is just my style! I seem to have gotten lazier at cooking with age.

Bread is also my downfall @harriethoyle! Would gladly never eat another potato or chip ever again, but bread is a different story.

Another my b2b I lost a total of 3lbs, leaving 4lbs of holiday gain to shift. I’m approaching the time of my cycle where my weight creeps up anyway, so all in all, not a bad place to be in after a week of cocktails and eating out.

We’re going away for the weekend just the two of us. We haven’t had a night off from the kids in nearly a year, so this is a real treat! Inevitably there will be copious amounts of food and alcohol, but I make no apologies!

I will do a workout this morning though before we leave and will try to get in plenty of steps.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend, whatever your plans are!

TeaRose29 · 14/04/2023 08:53

Yesterday was about 1350 in the end, but I did play tennis. Another 1/4 pound off this morning, yay! This is my new lowest “recent” weight. Next goal is to get to a weight that starts with a new number - 3 1/2 pounds to go!

Today I’m just going to be careful. I’ve got a work zoom this morning that will need a lot of concentration, I’m going to have a beauty sesh this afternoon, and we are going out for dinner with friends this evening. Good luck anyone fasting today!

FlightDeckBuckarooo · 14/04/2023 13:20

Congratulations on the losses! fantastic work :-)
I was back to my recent lightest this morning too, but I’m currently on my way to stay with family for the weekend and it’s hard to have much control over food there, so this weight might well be very short lived! It’s only a few days though and I hear my aunt has a new air fryer so they might well be on a health kick anyway. Fingers crossed…
Im back to work on Monday after 2 weeks. It’s lovely to be off but so much easier to fast on work days. I’m planning on fasting Monday, Wednesday and Thursday next week.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

harriethoyle · 14/04/2023 13:58

@Onehappymam @TeaRose29 @FlightDeckBuckarooo Great SVs everyone. I am back to pre Easter weight this morning - I think my husband's scales are more forgiving than mine but I'll take it! Really busy at work today so IF was a cinch. Going to try it this weekend too 🤞

FD on Mon Tues and Thurs next week, see you here!

Does anyone else log their fasts on MyFitnessPal? If I’m on a fast day and eating during a 10 hour window, I’m not sure whether to log the fast as 19.00 to 09.00 the night before or the night after, when I’m only consuming water and Pukka tea, or is the fast to be logged actually the 10 hour eating window?

summersanchez · 14/04/2023 20:02

B2B zero calorie fasts are sooo good
Day 2 is much easier than day 1 Ime

YourWinter · 14/04/2023 20:08

Ah it’s ok, its explained on MFP when I read a bit further!

summersanchez · 14/04/2023 20:36

I was aiming for OMAD but have a cold so I was weak
Had a coffee with oat milk and sugar at 11 then a bulletproof coffee at 1 and spaghetti with veggie meatballs (followed by a chocolate chip cookie 😱) and a hot chocolate 6-7
I would have made that the end of
My eating window but had covonia and a lemsip with honey

summersanchez · 15/04/2023 15:53

Back on it today. 19 hours so far. I plan to eat at 6pm
I'm amazed that I don't feel at all hungry

MopsySmithe · 16/04/2023 09:47

Starting the day with the determination to begin 5:2 again 😊

I was doing 5:2 around 10 years ago and the results were fantastic and I felt wonderful.
I am currently at my heaviest (around 10 st, 5ft 3) and need to lose some weight to fit comfortably in my clothes again.

Thanks to this thread, I am ready to begin!

TeaRose29 · 16/04/2023 10:00

Up 1.5 pounds yesterday morning (boo) after meal out on Friday, but had a low cal IF day yesterday - didn’t eat until 3pm - and back down to my lowest recent weight. Yay! Plan for today is to hold off eating as long as poss, and to stick to low-fat protein as far as poss, to enable a mini day. Also going to do some gardening, as it finally seems warm enough! Any one else fasting today?

harriethoyle · 16/04/2023 10:37

Very impressed with the weekend fasters... I find it impossible! Back on it tomorrow, have managed if the last couple of days and think that might be the way forward on nfd...

summersanchez · 16/04/2023 11:39

Good luck mopsy are you fasting today?

summersanchez · 16/04/2023 11:41

Hi tearose I'm just delaying eating today. Hoping to hold out until early dinner around 5 PM but it can be difficult when I'm with my family at home

harriethoyle · 17/04/2023 05:25

Morning gang, disastrous day yesterday with a cancelled flight so this morning is starting with the red eye flight home to go straight yo work and is going to require ALL the caffeine and food to survive! See you tomorrow for a delayed fd...
