Would love to get advice on how careful I should be about carbs. I’ve been somewhat careful so far and eating lower carb - avoiding processed carbs but eating some potato, for example, but less than usual. Should I be being much more careful to reduce the amount of carbs even more?

PhoenixMama · 16/04/2021 09:44

@LotsOfTrees You def need to be really careful if you want to lose quickly. Keep your overall carbs below 50/40g but the lower it is the fastest you'll lose. White carbs (pasta, rice, potatoes, bread) are pretty much out and you have to be careful with root veg generally. That said now I've lost the majority of my weight on running days I've added a bread product back in (bagel thin with smoked salmon or slice of sourdough with 2 eggs) because my body just needs more fuel on those days. But for the first 12 weeks I didn't touch things like potatoes!

LotsOfTrees · 16/04/2021 09:49

Thanks @PhoenixMama, that’s all very helpful to know because I would like to make the most of the short 12 week burst. My DH cooks mostly but I think this means I’ll need to mostly take over from him for the next while.

PhoenixMama · 16/04/2021 10:02

@LotsOfTrees I tend to buy things like spring greens, spinach, cabbage, etc & use them as the 'carb' in my meals. Also Sainsbury's frozen cauliflower rice is amazing!

LotsOfTrees · 16/04/2021 11:24

@PhoenixMama That’s a great shout on the cauliflower rice especially. I can see I’ll need to make some adjustments and do some meal planning this weekend.

tinselandlights · 16/04/2021 12:24

@DrMadelineMaxwell I'm just a day behind you! Jumped on the scale this morning to see I've lost 3lbs which is good.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 16/04/2021 16:29

Excellent @tinselandlights, we can be buddies if you like!

tinselandlights · 16/04/2021 20:33

@DrMadelineMaxwell that would be great!

I am so tired tonight I feel like I could go to bed now at 8.30pm!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 16/04/2021 22:21

That was me on Tuesday but to be fair it was also the first day back for all the kids after the easter break and it was a full.on teaching day too.,

I had my usual salad and apple lunch, then had a piece of steak with some.dry fried mushrooms for dinner, with 2 eggs whipped up and cooked on the waffle maker. They were pretty nice. I dont really like egg and it repeats on me terribly depending on how it is cooked..
Then my recently bereaved sister came round to have a cuppa and dh got out cake!
But it was an individual serving and I'm finishing the day on 780 cals and 55carbs. Hopefully that hasn't spoilt my good start.

I need to up my exercise..we have an exercise bike and a rowing machine and I want to make sure I've got on at least one of them for at least 20 mins every day.
Counting down the days til my zumba class reopens!

PhoenixMama · 17/04/2021 08:34

Morning - so I don't know if there's something wrong with my body or my scale but apparently I've put on 8lbs in 2 days?

I am doing some weight bearing exercise so will be gaining some muscle but this is CRAZY and so frustrating! Not sure what to do?

@DrMadelineMaxwell Be careful adding exercise in the early days to be honest. Most of us have found that adding strenuous exercise can have a negative effect on losing - either you stall completely or your body just doesn't function as well as it should until you up your cals. It's a tricky mix!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 17/04/2021 12:51

Thanks for the warning.

tinselandlights · 17/04/2021 22:22

@PhoenixMama that sounds very odd! Do you think scales or water weight/constipation?

PhoenixMama · 17/04/2021 22:29

@tinselandlights I have no idea but I was below 800 cals today and didn't do additional exercise (walked 9.5k steps only) so I'll see what the scales say tomorrow.

My thighs feel like they're bigger but also feel more muscle-y so I could very much be building muscle below the fat and just not burning as much yet? I'm running tomorrow morning and I'm not giving that up - plus I have a date with a hot guy on Tuesday & I just want to feel comfortable in my body! (And Monday is cocktails & dim sum for my birthday!)

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/04/2021 14:09

I dont think I have it in me to 100% do 800 cals each and every day for the 12 weeks...and dh struggles with eating over 800-1000 normally without starting to gain (and hes 6 foot 3 and relatively active). He puts it down to following the restricted calories for a long time, which he has done. Far longer than the 12 weeks.

So I am being less strict on the weekend. Aiming for 5 days on the 800 and being a little less strict but not stupid at the weekend. A 2:5 rather than 5:2. I think this way i will be able to stick to it for longer.

Yesterday I was way over the cals and carbs I have being sticking to. But today I'm on it again more carefully.
No breakfast. 1 hour brisk walk with a friend.
Soup and some melon for lunch.
Roast chicken dinner (no roast potatoes!) for dinner.
Then i will meal prep for the week lunches. Salad all the way!

TheNextRightThing · 18/04/2021 22:22

I had a good day today - breakfast was a boiled egg and a rasher of bacon, lunch was 100g ham, 100g salad and some balsamic vinegar, and dinner was salmon with broccoli and peanut/soy dressing.

@DrMadelineMaxwell I think some leniency is the only way to do this style of eating. I went to my DSis' yesterday and had a bread roll and some crisps as part of lunch, so was over calories.

LotsOfTrees · 19/04/2021 06:40

My week one results are in and I have lost 7.75lbs! I know lots will be water etc but I’m amazed!

Starting weight: 225.75
BMI: 34.2

Week 1: 218
BMI: 33

Elakiya · 19/04/2021 07:17

Are we meant to do exercise on this diet? If so what type. I am worried about it impacting me negatively?

texican · 19/04/2021 07:36

Morning all,

I'm skulking in after a wonderful week away in Devon, lots of lovely long walks in the sunshine but also lots of food and drink so I'm resurfacing having put on 5lbs over the hols, oops! Hopefully some water weight and I'm 100% happy to get back on it now for term time and have meal planned this week. Weirdly (and helpfully!) I had a pizza, a burger bun and a pasta dish while out and realised that I am actually really happy to live without them most of the time - this is revolutionary for me. I thought if I had pasta or the burger bun (I've had burgers but not the bun) I would then feel like I'm being really deprived but it made me feel really full and bleurgh and I definitely don't need it again for a while. That's a massive win.

Wow lots of new faces here since I've been AWOL - welcome! ☺️ such a lovely supportive thread. @LotsOfTrees amazing first week loss. It's really motivating in those first few weeks and really helped to keep me on track even through subsequent weeks that might have been a bit lower. @Elakiya no reason that you shouldn't exercise once you've gotten into the swing of things but to be honest for at least the first few weeks my legs were replaced with blocks of lead and I was exhausted! So go with your body and try gentle exercise like walking and go from there. It can affect your weight loss though (although might help with your measurements) so keep an eye on it.

Today will be trusty scrambled egg and salad for lunch and then my fave cod wrapped in prosciutto with pesto and Creme fraiche for dinner. Have a great day everyone! ☀️

fizzfridays · 19/04/2021 09:26

Good morning everyone, I have been absent for a few weeks due to some family and work issues getting in the way of properly committing to this.

I'm back, have learned some lessons about what throws me off track, and determined to do this for myself. I would like to loose 2 stone ultimately, but need to get 1 off as soon as possible as my clothes don't fit and I feel awful.

I'm starting today and aiming to do 3 weeks of 800 then see where I am. Have a food shop arriving today full of fresh veg and lean meat so should be well prepared.

Now the weather is picking up I want to feel comfortable wearing shorts and strappy tops again!

traintraveller · 19/04/2021 10:11

Hi all
Hope its OK if I join. I followed BSD and these threads in 2018/2019 and maintained my loss until last autumn. However several factors combined means I am now gaining weight and have tried to go it alone but my motivation is shocking! So I'm hoping posting here will keep me accountable...

Puffincrossing · 19/04/2021 19:15

Hello all, congratulations those that have lost, there's some great numbers there. I was doing fine until yesterday when I went completely off the rails and so have supposedly put on 2lb since last Tuesday, I followed low carb the rest of the week so I'm hoping it's just a blip. Back on it today. I'm away at the weekend and self catering so going to stick with diet then but have some extra alcohol.

fizzfridays · 19/04/2021 19:32

Phew, day 1 over and closing the kitchen at 698

Lunch:
Picky bits of 2 boiled eggs, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, crab sticks (not great but needed using up!) and a few slices of Brunswick ham

Dinner:
Bolognese sauce on broccoli with a little Parmesan

I've been trying to chug the liquids, feel like my head is in the right zone this time!

Tinselandlights · 19/04/2021 20:27

@fizzfridays bolognese on broccoli sounds interesting! I always courgetti but I might try that!

Today I ate:
Salmon and egg 'muffins' with spring greens
L- salad with 100g ham
D- prawn stir fry

DrMadelineMaxwell · 19/04/2021 22:25

No breakfast (as usual) and stuck to cal free liquids til lunchtime.
L- Ham salad and apple.
D- Prawn salad.

Big walk round the shops with dd after school.

Then dh gave me a chocolate tart! I discarded a lot of pastry and just had a few mouthfuls but I'm a bit disappointed in myself.
I'm under the 800 cals and ok for sugars too as the rest of the day was so low, but it could have been better!

texican · 20/04/2021 07:41

Morning morning,

A good first day back on it yesterday. Had some evening cravings but settled for a cup of hot water and a frown 🙈 but no crisps which could have been possible for a short moment!

Today I will have tuna & red onion lettuce cups for lunch, and honey, soy & ginger baked chicken thighs with veg for dinner. I'm really tired after a terrible sleep so will have to keep up my motivation as tiredness is usually my biggest trigger.

On the plus side, 3lbs of holiday weight (water) off overnight which is positive!

Have a good day everyone ☀️
