Closing the kitchen at 691 today which I'm pleased with, and I managed to take the dog out for his 3 walks without collapsing from hunger!

I had a halloumi salad for lunch , 2 boiled eggs at about 5 then a beef and veg soup for dinner. Carbs ended up at 25 so not too bad.

@CycleGirl20 500g per day is amazing, I hope I manage anywhere close to that!

LockdownLard · 16/03/2021 07:14

Urgh have had a couple of days really craving chocolate and hot cross buns (not together)! Have managed to not cave in so far, I weigh every Wednesday so don’t want to mess that up, that will be three weeks of the BSD completed. I really need to lose weight but the main drive is lowering blood sugars which has been amazing so far, I try to think of it in my head as medical treatment and not a diet. I wanted to do the 8 weeks, but may try the 12 if I am still sticking to it.

I have read that low carb diets can cause hair loss after four months - has anyone experienced this?

CycleGirl20 · 16/03/2021 07:42

@fizzfridays it's early days for me on this diet so I'd expect a bit more. Plus I was due a bit of a drop after a 3 week plateau on my previous diet!

Good luck @LockdownLard for tomorrow and well done with not caving! I've done low carb for years in the past and never lost hair!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 16/03/2021 07:55

So bloody angry with my body this morning. A week of no movement (up if anything) and I’ve got so far to go. I know we sometimes get these plateaus but it’s still so early in the game. Every morning when I get up I’m so hopeful.

PhoenixMama · 16/03/2021 08:35

Morning all - I'm up 3lbs but I know that's mostly water weight given I had alcohol on the weekend.

@NaturalBlondeYeahRight Are you getting enough water? That makes a huge difference to me. I know I lose more on 4L than on 3L for example.

@CycleGirl20 Was it you who was water fasting before?

CycleGirl20 · 16/03/2021 08:44

@PhoenixMama yep - 2 months of water fasting (3, + 2 half days a week) and I hit a plateau. I'm 2kg now on week 1 of the Fast800. I guess that answers my question earlier about wether it would work and validates a few people suggesting I was eating a bit too little. 6.7kg to go until I'm back in my ok range and the same again to goal.

Plateaus suck! Especially when you're doing everything right. If it's more than a few weeks of plateau, switching it up a bit worked for me. A few weeks of the 5:2/4:3 to give your body a break is an option

PhoenixMama · 16/03/2021 09:25

@CycleGirl20 So I think rather than hit a plateau your body probably went into starvation mode which means you stop losing weight because your body's afraid you're never going to eat again and it holds onto everything. It's really common on water fasts. The difference with the Fast800 is you're giving your body enough to run on so it doesn't go into starvation but you're having less than normal so you can still lose.

CycleGirl20 · 16/03/2021 09:35

I was having a massive panic Last week @PhoenixMama! I also felt pretty miserable. I mean, who wants to live with no food all week. I had to have surgery for fertility reasons and it's basically given me a limited 3-4 month period to get my weight down. My weight only went up when we'd not conceived after a few months and I thought it might be my (less intense) fasting and stopped. Then I had to start seeing a fertility specialist who said my weight needed to come down and gave me 4 weeks to lose 3.5kg. It was looking pretty sketchy at first with the water fast failing, but I think I've pulled it back. I feel like I'm doing my best and I've been through enough this last 12 months without arbitrarily rapid weight loss targets!

HeeHiHoHum · 16/03/2021 09:49

@NaturalBlondeYeahRight I've been on the same weight since last Thursday, despite eating under 800 cals (except for Mother's day when the roast pushed me over but only to about 1000). Also frustrated as it's only the second week so didn't think I'd hit a plateau so early but will keep persevering.

I'm giving myself the full 12 weeks (10 and a half to go!) on this, regardless of loss, and then take it from there. I am a little worried that my metabolism is adjusting to this new 800 cal intake though.

texican · 16/03/2021 10:09

Morning all,

Welcome to all the new joiners, nice to see you. I had a very bad weekend of food and drink and felt quite guilty yesterday so full of good intentions going forward. Proudly announced I wasn't drinking next weekend and was gently reminded I've signed up to a zoom wine tasting on Friday so that's that scuppered already!

I'm feeling slimmer this week though which is a bit of a first. Still waiting to lose weight from my face though which is annoying. Face and tum always the last to go. Went for a run for the first time in forever yesterday so feeling a bit stiff today!

PhoenixMama · 16/03/2021 10:41

@HeeHiHoHum Do you know what your macros are? That might make a difference as to stalling on week 2. Also how much you have to lose makes a difference too.

@texican Is it bad I'm jealous of your Zoom wine tasting?

HeeHiHoHum · 16/03/2021 10:59

@PhoenixMama It's usually around 60/70% fat, around 20% protein and no more than 20% carbs. I'm not anywhere near healthy bmi range (12 kg to reach the very upper limit of healthy, another 4 kg on top to reach a BMI of 23 which is recommended for my ethnicity).

I know I need to up the protein so will work on that this week!

PhoenixMama · 16/03/2021 11:06

@HeeHiHoHum So your fat is WAY too high and your protein way too low. You should be around
Carbs: 25%
Protein 40%
Fat: 35%

You definitely won't lose at 70% fat, this is why what you eat is as if not more important than how much!

HeeHiHoHum · 16/03/2021 11:19

I think it's because I've been lurking on the low carb bootcamps that I've decided it's fine, although I had already set the MFP goals to the macros you suggested Blush

It has been all under 800 cals so I didn't think it'd stall this much but will have a rejig with the macros and see if that has a better effect!

Thanks so much for the help, it's amazing having other people's insight to spot where you're going wrong.

CycleGirl20 · 16/03/2021 14:31

I've just upped my protein by 5% to match. Where did you get those numbers? Although I will say I've done well on protein heavy diets in the past. I do like that the carbs are enough to have a weekend breakfast bread roll though!

PhoenixMama · 16/03/2021 14:55

I think it's in the Michael Moseley book! I remember it specifically because when I started I had the numbers all wrong too and Bear set me straight which made a huge difference!

fizzfridays · 16/03/2021 16:01

@texican I'm jealous of the wine tasting. Not long til we can sit in actual pubs/bars!

@PhoenixMama out of curiosity do you know why having a high fat macro would prevent weight loss even if we stay under 800 cals which should be a decent deficit for anyone? Is it because it's not sustainable to eat with those macros as more protein is needed? I find the background behind how things work really interesting.

Struggling a bit today, am freezing and have had no energy on the dog walks. Absolutely chugging the water and might have a broth drink soon to keep me going. Hopefully I'll get into ketosis soon and won't feel as lethargic.

CycleGirl20 · 16/03/2021 17:09

I think protein is good because it triggers hormones in your brain better than carbs and fat to tell you you're full. Your body also uses about 30% of the energy from protein in order to burn it, so 100cals of protein eaten is only worth 70cals as it takes 30 to burn it.

Candy500 · 16/03/2021 17:43

Hi has anyone signed up to the fast 800 online and paid the fee/ did you find it useful for staying on track?

LockdownLard · 17/03/2021 07:27

Weigh in today - have lost the magic stone in just three weeks, am hoping this will spur me on to week 4 as this week have had a couple of hard days sticking to it.

Starting Weight: 259lbs
Starting BM (blood sugar) on waking: 12.6mmol/L
Waist: 126cm
BMI: 39.38

Week 3
Weight: 245lbs - 3lb loss, total 14lb loss
BM: 6.6mmol/L
Waist: 111cm - total reduced 15cm
BMI: 37.25

HeeHiHoHum · 17/03/2021 08:34

@candy500 I haven’t but am interested in knowing more too!

@LockdownLard amazing news! It must be wonderful to see a tangible difference in things like your waist measurements.

PhoenixMama · 17/03/2021 08:44

Morning - stagnant again today but I wasn't very good yesterday. Seems I have discovered that rage is my emotional eating achilles heal. I don't know about you all but after last week I feel battered and angry. I managed to overcome my emotional eating when I was sad when I did Fast800 1st time but right now I'm all over the place. Going to make sure I write everything in mfp for the next few days snd see how that goes. I'm also going to go to 6:1 to try and contain the damage, if I eat well for the 6 days I'm going to have one more relaxed one and see how I get on.

@fizzfridays I'm not great with the science but it has to do with how your body processes fat, it burns carbs first and then if you don't have enough it starts to slow down towards starvation mode. I think it stores fat first and burns it last if that makes sense? That might just be my awful understanding though!

@Candy500 There was someone when I first started here that did the website but said she found this more helpful overall because it was a smaller group? I guess if you've read the book what other info do you need?

Well done @LockdownLard - look at your BM numbers too - brilliant!

fizzfridays · 17/03/2021 09:31

Thanks @CycleGirl20 and @PhoenixMama it's so interesting how complex nutrition is- so much more to it than the typical eat less move more calorie counting advice.

Well done @LockdownLard those results are amazing.

I found yesterday really tough, it was my 4th day low carb and second on 800cal and I was absolutely exhausted all day. Stuck to it and finished at 774 but I was very grumpy and not at all nice to be around. Hopefully I'll have started switching to fat burning today and will have more energy.

Had a food delivery yesterday so got plenty of lovely food options in. I am trying to keep things simple for the moment and stick to meat, veg, eggs and cheese whilst my body adapts. I have low carved before and my downfall is always over complicating things and trying to make low carb desserts etc which end up being ridiculously high in cals and not really satisfying the craving anyway!

LockdownLard · 17/03/2021 09:48

Thanks all, my jeans are definitely looser, luckily I have saved all my outgrown jeans so I can gradually start trying to get into a lower size!
I have struggled a couple of days this week, but it isn’t hunger, it’s more “fancying” certain foods (all unhealthy!) - the sugar free gum helps push away the cravings for sweet treats.

HeeHiHoHum · 17/03/2021 10:18

@PhoenixMama it's been a really draining week. I sad-eat and bored-eat and i-really-love-food-eat but I don't think I've ever rage-eaten. I can see why this week would not be good for that!

MFP has been really helpful in keeping me on track. I spent all of yesterday evening meal planning for the week ahead and inputting all the data into MFP. Took bloody ages but wanted to make sure the macros weren't wildly off. I'm struggling with keeping the protein and fat in balance - if anyone has a typical day's menu where the macros are 25% carb, 35% fat and 40% protein they want to share, I'd be really grateful!
