5:2 Thread number 93: Drive in the fasting lane to goal !

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2020 18:53

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 Smile

The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850- 1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to mainitain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below if you need a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, but on FDs count any milk / sugar calories.
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back less than you burn. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.
Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid sugar or fruit juice. e.g. Stir-fries, soups & stews. Ready meals are OK.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs, optionally reduce to 700 cals gradually.
You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are fine.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting & Health

BBC article on the original Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

Fasting boosts "autophagy" = recycling of old cells
Yoshinori Ohsumi won the 2016 Nobel prize for Medicine for research into autophagy
NOBEL Lecture “Autophagy – An Intracellular Recycling System”

Prof. R Taylor (Newcastle Uni) won the 2013 Diabetes UK Banting Prize for his Twin Cycle Hypothesis re the cause of type 2 diabetes: Twin Cycle Hypothesis T2
and showed a fasting diet could reverse T2

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

HORMESIS & Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson (Mosely referred to his research) showed:

. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Brain metabolism in health, aging, andneurodegeneration :
"lifestyles that include intermittent bioenergetic challenges, most notably exercise and dietary energy restriction, can increase the likelihood that the brain will function optimally and in the absence of disease throughout life"

He compared 5:2 to ordinary daily diets on overweight women with family history of breast cancer.
Fasting group lost more belly fat, retained more muscle & had slightly better blood sugar regulation.

More of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease

His article in J Aging Mech Disease 2015 explains the health benefits of intermittent fasting in great scientific detail.

Why intermittent fasting and stopping snacking can lower your risk of serious diseases:
Meal frequency and timing in health and disease

Fasting can help maintain brain health during aging:

NY Times Fasting Overview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.

@MazDazzle we're almost festive gain twins - I put on 11lb! I REGRET NOT ONE MOUTHFUL!! Have already lost 7 of them with this weeks back to back which shows the vast majority of it wasn't true gain if that makes sense... Should be back to normal in a couple of weeks.

Planned holiday/honeymoon to Dubai has been postponed due to lockdown... howl! On the plus side, no all inclusive weight gain to add to the festive weight gain! ;-)

KylieKoKo · 06/01/2021 13:30

Today is my second fast day.

Just had coffee and water so far. as well as a livestream strength and conditioning class.

My evening meal will be salmon with courgette cooked with garlic and tomoato and mushrooms roast in olive oil spray. I will also have miso soup, salad and a boiled egg if I need to.

I haven't weighed myself post Xmas yet. I will be doing so tomorrow morning. Hopefully I am not back at my starting weight!

CoffeeRequiredNow · 06/01/2021 16:31

I think I've discovered the secret to weightloss...trying to home-school four kids whilst also working from home and still keeping on top of all the regular course and housework! I have not had a moment to myself all day, so much so that even though it's a FD and I had no breakfast I forgot about lunch until the middle of the afternoon!

If I keep this up until school opens again I'll be half the weight I am now! It's manic!

ListeningQuietly · 06/01/2021 16:35

Coffee
My HUGE sympathies to you and anybody trying to cope with kids at home again
hopefully the school are providing decent resources
as they have had a bit of practice now
but the logistics are horrific for most families

ladybranstonpickle · 06/01/2021 17:36

Sounds horrendous Coffee! Good way of looking on the bright side though.

I am struggling a bit tbh....skipped having a cup of English tea at 4pm bc I was busy with the baby but now regretting it. Also made the baby a delicious dinner of chicken a la king - so temptingly delicious!

Also need to do my yoga before dinner, which seems very far away!

missfliss · 06/01/2021 18:41

Hello folks - back on the fasting after a planned Xmas hiatus! Lost 14 pounds last year and regained 1/2 of that back. Got about 12 pounds to lose in total.

I tend to do best on a 4:3 500-600 cal diet on a OMAD principle ( Monday / Wednesday and Friday are preferred days). I'm also on day 3 of no fructose ( having a 5 day sugar detox and then being mainly sugar free ).

Feels good to be back in the driving seat again after giving myself a free rein in December. I had some delicious foods and don't regret it at all :-)
Had a

Kitchen closed on 854.

Definitely more of a mini than a true FD, but it's a big improvement on the last few months! Might try another mini tomorrow, at least will do 16:8 anyway.

I'm looking forward to my lunch tomorrow!

KylieKoKo · 06/01/2021 21:35

I'm feeling peckish and about to have a boiled egg and a few cherry tomatoes which will put me on about 500 calories. I'd much rather have some crisps but I can have them tomorrow ...

First weigh in after Christmas is tomorrow.

MazDazzle · 06/01/2021 21:45

If I could have my festive fortnight again harriet I wouldn’t change it either! I’m really pleased I’ve managed to get back on it so fast after Xmas. Sometimes it takes me a lot longer!

Kitchen closed at just under 750 cals. Day 2 of b2b. Hoping to see another drop in the scales tomorrow.

Distance learning for kids sucks coffee. My kids hated it last time. They’re not back til next week though, so for now they’re enjoying an extended holiday, despite google classroom pinging away in anticipation.

CoffeeRequiredNow · 06/01/2021 22:20

Well done Kylie and good luck with the weigh-in tomorrow 👍

Kitchen closed at 575, am inordinately excited about my breakfast tomorrow! 😂😂

Going to bed now to avoid the kitchen cupboards and to get ready for another fun day of home-schooling!

Fillybuster · 06/01/2021 22:59

Closing out today around the 800 mark (possibly a tiny bit over after 3 squares of 90% dark choc after dinner....but I promise that was better than the alternative!!). Combined with a good walk at lunchtime and an hour of Bodypump (thank god for Les Mills whilst the gym is closer) - not great but I’ll take that as a win. I need to get better at powering through the mid-afternoon lull, which is waaaaay easier when there aren’t 3 kids and dh around all eating and snacking just when I don’t want to get distracted by food!

inthethickofit19 · 07/01/2021 07:32

Morning all,

Anyone fasting today?

Really feel for all those having to home school in between working from home. I have a 3 and 1 year old so my husband and I are working shifts as obv they can't be left to their own devices. Means one of us is working well into the evening and the exhaustion over the week just piles up.

Anyway - I slept VERY badly last night, didn't get to sleep till 1am and then dh was snoring horrendously (after a long phase of no snoring strangely enough) so I feel like I've hardly slept.

Going to try stick to my FD though as I want to get it out of the way. Gonna be a tough one so I'll prob spam the page!!!

inthethickofit19 · 07/01/2021 07:33

Whereabouts are we all on our weight loss journey? I've got minimum 1 stone to lose. Preferably 2. Currently 10 stone and slightly overweight. I'm only 5"2 though and so much better closer to 8 stone. Although I've not been under 9 for the last 10 years!

MazDazzle · 07/01/2021 08:56

That sucks about your honeymoon harriet.

Welcome back missfliss. Sounds like you e got a good plan in place.

Another 2lb off, so that’s a total of 5lb for my b2b. 7lb to go to take me back to what I was just before Xmas. After that another stone would be nice.

Breakfast beckons! Enjoy your day everyone.

Beautiful3 · 07/01/2021 09:23

Fasted Tuesday, did a mini fast yesterday and fasting today. Feeling hungry already! Will get the filter coffee going! More home schooling today.

moonlight1705 · 07/01/2021 09:30

I feel for you all having to homeschool. I must admit, I was happy that nurseries can stay open so DD is going there. Good luck with lockdown 3!

I'm also doing FD number 2 today and am feeling the cold. I've got veg soup for lunch and jacket pot for dinner but my stomach is growling.

ListeningQuietly · 07/01/2021 11:02

Morning all,
Not particularly fasting, but have done my morning Yoga.

Post Christmas Tips
A lot of the massive weight gain over a two week binge is basically undigested food and water.
If you are really strict
both with not snacking
and with two or three SUB 800 days a week
that weight should come off nearly as fast as it went on.

I do not do dry January or veganuary
but I cut down significantly on both meat and booze
and it makes a significant difference.

Especially with a long lockdown ahead of us, being attentive is essential

ListeningQuietly · 07/01/2021 11:07

Daytime food ideas for those who are home schooling

Just thinking back to when my little dears were small ...

  • try not to have crisps and other processed foods around the house.
  • a ramekin of raisins / apricots / sultanas and nuts is a GOOD sized snack for a kid
  • hard boiled eggs ~ maybe even with the luxury of devilled yolks ~ are a fab snack
  • carrot sticks and slices of thing like pepper and cucumber and celery ~ with or without hummus or equivalent dip ~ are excellent snack foods
  • cherry tomatoes or grapes are good for the low sugar moments
  • sticks of cheese are AMAZING for kids (chop up proper blocks, none of that packaged stuff

That way when you and your kids need a snack and chill out time
you are still eating low calories
and they are learning that healthy food can be comfort food
cheshire cheese is my real weakness!!

harriethoyle · 07/01/2021 11:12

Thanks @MazDazzle - am thinking of it as a pleasure delayed is a pleasure enhanced! It will be fab when we finally get there. And I have upgraded us to first class on the way out as a surprise to my DH! selfless face ;-)

c.1100 cals yesterday; have got some skimmed milk so I can have tea (because I hate semi skimmed and take my coffee black) and that saved me because I was freezing! and a few cuppas warmed me up nicely.

Today we are having ham sandwiches for lunch and prawn stir fry for dinner so should be another low calorie day. My youngest SD got an excellent all A's school report so we are having a pizza party tomorrow night! The thought of that is helping me stay on the straight and narrow...

KylieKoKo · 07/01/2021 11:30

My weigh in wasn't too bad this morning. After 2 fast days just 1.5 pounds on over Xmas (I deserve of it to be more).

So just over a stone to go until I am in the healthy weight range.

harriethoyle · 07/01/2021 12:02

Fabulous @KylieKoKo I would count that as a scale victory!

inthethickofit19 · 07/01/2021 13:08

Well done for shedding some of the Xmas weight!

Struggling now. Mainly because I'm so tired but only 3 hours to go until I eat.

I tried this before and it didnt work for me but granted i didnt give it much time, i need to lose weight badly and I know this is a good way and is healthy but i really dont want to starve myself 2 days a week just to lose a lb at the end of the week, if that was the case id go back to sw. Anyone give me good resuts each week, surely if you arent taking in that many calorues for 2 days the weight loss shoujld be more rapid? Thanks in advance
