Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

BigChoc not gluttony as we all remember awful meals and that doesn't mean we don't like food!

Your lamb and goats cheese curry sounds delicious but I would have to use red, yellow or orange peppers as I am not keen on the green ones.

I ended up making mince pies, chocolate load and cheese and date bread.

TalkinPeace · 21/12/2013 13:13

ELR
West Wickham huh? DH grew up there. We used to drink at the Wheatsheaf and the Poppy ....

everybody
thank you for the curry ideas - DS is really into them and now I know which book to get him for Christmas!

mrsF
ground cardamon - there are sellers on t'internet ... I looked it up but then got distracted before posting ...

did not post last night as had friends round and grazed and drank all evening

Anybody who wants to know about my spare cat - thread on Litter tray

Time to go watch DD busking with her orchestra in the rain. Oh joy Xmas Grin

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 21/12/2013 13:28

West Wickham? STBX (as in stupid bastard not soon to be Wink) grew up there too. I lived in various surrounding places for years.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 21/12/2013 13:41

Toffee You're right about the green peppers; I think that's why I stopped doing it. I'll use red / yellow instead.

But I'll have to use up a few things in my fridge first; it is so crammed full I have to be very careful opening it and believe me, I have a big 2m high fridge-freezer, all for one Frenzier.
Xmas Smile
Oh, one of my favourite new nibbles is to cut a few of those long red peppers into strips , sprinkle with olive oil, salt and Moroccan spices, then bake for 15 mins.
It's cured me of unhealthy crisp munching.
Xmas Shock

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 21/12/2013 13:54

Congrats on your clever DS, Eats !

Bssh I have no trouble maintaining my Frenzy capacity.
Xmas Grin
However, I would like to convert to a healthy weekly Frenzy of up to 3500 cals.

I noticed yesterday that the Christmas Haagen Daz ice cream orgy, which I would normally love, tasted sickly sweet for the first time in my life.
I still love cookies, cheesecake, donuts, muffins, so I've a way to go to rid myself of the sweet junk tooth.

FD today, zero cal so far and I am off to the gym now for a few weights and then fasted spin.
I have a delicious smoked salmon, chilli shrimp & fromage frais salad prepared for afterwards, so my post-training shower will be world record speed.
And 5:2 is said to be deprivation ??
Xmas Smile

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 21/12/2013 14:48

Just popping to say hi.

Im having a well earned sit down. Went to Parkrun this morning with DS then I took the dog out and walked 2 miles through mud in the wind and rain. Saw a couple of deer running through a field. So thats 500 cals burned, but it feels more like 5000 calories.

Ive been googling various fitness things in my area, I really fancy the Millitary Fitness bootcamps that are nearby me, but they are on at inconvenient times for me. There is a gym down the road which has a 30/30/30 class (30 secs cardio, 30 sec strength, 30 sec tone and repeat) that I really fancy doing. There was no prices though so I left them a message on FB (as per their instructions to someone else) and have a feeling that it will be expensive. Ive noticed in the past that the cheap gyms will tell you their prices straight away whereas the expensive ones seem to not want to tell you until they have given you a big sell. Im not into that, I wont use it enough. I just one class a week. Might just stick to running and looking at starting with Planks in Jan and adding crunches to that in March or something. Dont know what's best really. I just want to be toned too.

Having a day off today from 16:8 as had cake at Parkrun this morning and that was before 10 so not 16 hours since last night. I only had a light lunch though and not eating till my evening meal, but I am sat here with a can of cherry coke and I did have 1.5 mince pies this morning.

Still not measured myself, but I will. Probably tomorrow just before I get into my weekly pamper bath.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 21/12/2013 16:01

My book has just arrived. Ive just had a quick thumb through. DH did this Hmm as suspected. I will read it properly tomorrow a bit and leave it lying around. Hopefully he will pick it up and at least look at it and maybe read the back.

Towards the back there were some testimonials on there and some of the names were X from Mumsnet. That made me smile. No names I recognised though, but there seems to be a few people giving their experiences from here. Wonder if Michael or Mimi are reading this thread.

TalkinPeace · 21/12/2013 17:31

Biscuits
I'm one of the testemonials, Laska42 is another, BreadandWine is another and I think Greeneggs is one of them as well Xmas Grin
When they were doing the book and their website www.52fastdiet.co.uk/, one of their researchers joined the threads for a while.

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 21/12/2013 17:55

Been cooking, tidying, cleaning, shopping for two days now, need a rest!

MrsFlorrick · 21/12/2013 20:20

Eatriskier. Congrats on your DS! Very nice. I have two July born DC. DD is coping really well and is top of the class for reading but I do worry about DS when the time comes!! DDs teacher said that summer born girls adjust much better than boys. So extra big ups to your DS for doing so exceptionally well!! GrinThanks

Lots of folk from the WW and Beckenham areas! ELD we are neighbours! Grin Whenever I'm in West Wickham now, ill be silding up to people say naice ham etc GrinGrin

Made my turkey gravy today (Jamie Oliver one) and my glazed Christmas ham. Mine was cooked in mulled wine with extra orange and spices. Then glazed with muscovado sugar orange and mustard and baked. It's super yummy and won't last long.

I went out late afternoon to get last few bits. Went to Waitrose where I was accosted in the car park by this man (with wife and baby) whom I'd seen around several shops today. Turns out he was a god botherer of some sort and wanted me to come to church. Fine. But then he started going on about my baby and pregnancy and how far along I was SadSadSad. Given my BMI of 21.8 and having worked out a lot this year. This totally took the wind out of my sails. I cried on the way home in fine car.

I feel totally deflated and not Christmassy at all. SadSad

Be back later. I'm about sort DH and I dinner.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 21/12/2013 20:53

MrsF ... tell me where he was and what he looked like, I'm going to go find him and smack the bastard in the face!!

Pay no fucking attention WHATSOEVER!! The prick!!

Was probably a tactic. The creepy [insert C word]

Please don't let that twat spoil your mood.

I just thought I'd pop on here, had to skim read last day to catch up which mostly involved skimming! Am partially blind atm thanks to my friend red.

All rules have been abandoned! I am reaching the conclusion that Christmas period is a write off.

Can't be arsed to constantly think/worry about what I've consumed or want to consume. For very dull reasons won't bore you with Christmas is only opportunity get to switch off. So that is what I'm doing! Will worry (or not) in two weeks time. Life is too short after all!

Am making progress with hula hoop though. In fact I BLOODY LOVE MY HULA HOOP! - and so funny. At one point I was doing so well, but I was laughing so much, I had to stop myself because I was scared of pelvic floor failure!! Hilarious as was first time if managed more than 5 turns in row!

Stuffed on Pathia, dall samba and naan. Filling remaining space with lashings of red wine and some yummy macaroons. All is well with world.

Hope you're all enjoying yourselves. X

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 21/12/2013 21:11

MrsF
Your photo shows how great you look now.
That god-bothering twat should have gone to SpecSavers instead of the Sky Fairy's playground.

He's a real-life moron, comparable to that bloke in their ad who mistakes Gordon Ramsay's kitchen for a sauna and nearly gets his dick chopped along with the veg.

Just forget him. He needs ignoring or a good kick in the bollocks with your Rosa Klebb pointy shoes.

ELR · 21/12/2013 21:13

Ooh MRSF just seen you are in beckenham I'm not far from you I'm in west wickham.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 21/12/2013 21:17

I've been very Xmas Confused as to why people have been congratulating DS when my last post mentioning him had him covering himself and my bathroom in wee. Then I remembered ears post!

Thanks for the continued well wishing by you all. Its not been a good day. I ended up in tears at DM on the phone this morning, and she really didn't need that at all poor woman. I let 3 years of hurt explode out a bit and feel thoroughly ashamed. DF has worsened quite badly but is on a ward where I can't bring the DCs so we're trying to plan how I can go visit him on my own. I've got all my fingers crossed for him at the moment.

Breadandwine · 21/12/2013 21:23

Wonder if Michael or Mimi are reading this thread.

They'd be fools not to be keeping an eye on us, I reckon!

Meant to say, upthread, another trick for mindful eating is to put smaller amounts on the fork. And, one from Tip, if you're about to nibble chocolate or crisps, etc: physically look at whatever it is you're putting into your mouth - gives you time to think, 'Do I really need this?'

About exercise - apart from my usual daily 20 minutes aerobic exercise, I've been following some of the exercises on here.

Except I don't do the lunges - apparently they're not very good for you!

Too tight to spend any money, so home-based exercises are right up my street!

Only been doing them a few weeks and already I can see a difference.

TalkinPeace · 21/12/2013 21:23

((((( MrsFlorrick )))))
He was bloody rude as well as being an effing god botherer
stand tall, you look fab
How is DisneyDad coping with your ongoing Womanflu ? Xmas Wink

Eatriskier
At least you have said it all now to your Mum. Bottling up is never good.
And yes, kids in hospitals is rarely worth the stress.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 21/12/2013 21:26

Turkey, TURKEY !! ^^

-You shall not abandon IF in a Christmas / New Year wimpy wipeout
-You shall not drown your feathers in lakes of Wine
-You shall continue exercising that fat arse
-You shall achieve SWARTH

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 21/12/2013 21:37

I must of course congratulate EarSlaps on her clever DS !

Eats
Sorry, I was one of those confusing you with Ears. This thread is so busy.
Blush
However, your DS does sound the champion of piss - can you enter him in a contest and make some money ?
Xmas Grin

So sorry about your DF worries. I do hope you can arrange to visit him in peace.

MrsFlorrick · 21/12/2013 22:06

Thank you everyone Thanks

Made chicken soup and stock with leftovers too and cleaned ovens out. Phew.

Turkey. Thanks for offering violence!! He'd probably just turn the other cheek Wink

Bigchoc. I needed you to swing him over your head by his ankles Grin. Sadly I was wearing non pointy boots. Otherwise I'd have kicked him in the nads.

TIP Thanks thanks.

Sorry Earslaps and Eatrisker!!! I typed wrong name in relation to Reception superstar achievements!!

Although Eatriskier wee-gate was quite an achievement. Wink If we got our DSs together I dread to think what would happen!

ELR. Yes neighbours indeed. Grin Watch out for people asking you about naice ham!

MrsFlorrick · 21/12/2013 22:09

TIP. Disney Dad foisted DC off on me while I cooked Christmas ham and he iPad'd. When I insisted he at least look after DS because I was lugging heavy vats of boiling liquid around and it was dangerous for a small man to be clinging into my leg, he just sat DS down and gave him an iPad Hmm

TalkinPeace · 21/12/2013 22:11

How to call a family meeting in 2013 : unplug the router and stand by it.
or in MrsFlorricks house - remove its power cable when DisneyDad needs to pay attention to his DCs Wink

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 21/12/2013 22:23

BigChoc - you'll have to catch me first :p

Btw...

HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE EVERYBODY!

Cheers! Wine

MrsFlorrick · 21/12/2013 22:23

TIP. I've just snorted water out of my nose laughing at that!!

MrF has retired to bed because he is so tired Hmm. Honestly. His whole arsy poor me thing is pissing me off wholesale.

Oh well. It must be time for Wine Grin

TalkinPeace · 21/12/2013 22:26

MrsFlorrick
OOh OOOOH revenge moment
take a glass of wine upstairs, sit on the edge of the bed and witter at him about how you chose different jars of pickled fish
keep going till he complains
and then remind him about him telling you all about his day at Claridges

(reminds self to stop channeling Joy from Drop the Dead Donkey so much Grin )

MrsFlorrick · 21/12/2013 22:28

Yes I should channel Joy from Drop the Dead Donkey more Wink

Sadly I'm too busy to annoy MrF about pickled scandi fish as I have wine and am scoffing pepper nuts. GrinGrin
