Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks for the welcome

Sorry a lot of you are sick, vomiting bugs are the worst like of short term weightloss ever (the weight goes straight back on plus a few pounds with me).

bigchoc are you serious? I can have 1000 calories on a fast day? [Grin] I was planning on more like 600. I think I'll give the 1000 cals fast a try, I can always reduce my calories later.

I'll not check a set of scales till the start of term
and I'll be back where I need to be by late January

actually I've not put on too much as my knees are not hurting

Had chicken and noodles for tea, so the LOF didn't quite go to plan Sad. Still managed to come in at just under 500 cals though. Praying I manage to go to bed without eating anything else!

I'm currently 8oz above my pre-Xmas weight. When I weigh myself tomorrow I'm hoping to have lost that.

Good luck Angie!

Well done on your first fast day sorelip.

It's nearly dinner time. Just over an hour to go!

Tonight I have cracker bread and chutney, Irish stew and a thin and a big bowl of Xmas pud and cream planned. Along with a couple of glasses of non alcoholic mulled wine (courtesy of bottle green, I love them). All nicely under 1000 calories.

But, but, but... Just found out the extremely mad and dangerous neighbour is just not coming back ever. Aibu the hit the champers a day early?

Hi all, I'll be joining you on 5:2, or possibly 4:3. I did my first FD on Friday and it went really well. Was going to have another today but it's Dh's birthday and he wants to order pizza, so I'll be having a mini fast.

My 9yo DS has been behaving like such a moody swine these last few days that I did a search on the topic -and found a post by me from 6 months ago Grin I guess not much has changed

In other news, my fast day is about to go awry as I'm definitely hitting the bottle. Yesterday ended up being a bit of a mini fast and today will be as well. Not perfect, but it will do for now.

Greetings everyone! Ooh, it's nice to be back Smile. Have not fasted for nearly two weeks now, since having sickness bug the week before Christmas.
As far as I can tell, only put a couple of pounds on which I'm really pleased about. Am going to attempt a fast on Thursday of this week and then back on it properly next Monday.
Hope it's gone well for all of you Grin and is there a new thread, or are we filling this one up first?

welcome back - that sounds tres hard core being good 5 days a week!
but hey, if you are happy with it, just remember to stay hydrated.

I'mabadgirl
welcome.
Yup, you want to stay inside your TDEE on the other 5 days a week Averaged - so a tad under during the week allows Wine at the weekend....

Today is my normal FD and I've just had my first meal of bread and a milky chocolate drink. I don't know how many calories that is but that's my meal first and last for the day. I intend to do this five days this week (as restitution for all the holiday eating) Xmas Grin and only eat normally or pig out on new years day, its bqck to normal 5:2 on the second.
Happy New Year to u all in advance and I pray that the New Year brings wit it great things especially good health and a steady weightloss.

Hello all, a newbie here, have a stone to lose then I'll be happy, I fasted yesterday and managed to have 485 cals all day, was tough but I made it.

Have tried to eat normally today but am quite aware of calories. I've worked out my TDEE to be 1995, is this the amount of cals I have to eat on a non fast day?

Hello everyone,

This is my third FD - started last Monday (although my Thursday FD was more like 600 than 500). Had a big meal at around 7 pm last night and have had only white coffee since getting up around 6:20 am. Felt a bit peckish last night but stuck to reading in bed and turned my light out at 10:30 pm. Going well so far this am, although my tum is rumbling a bit. Will probably try to push the fast out as far as I can and then have a hot Marmite drink (I don't do Bovril).

I haven't noticed any change yet, but am just telling myself that it is early days. I haven't been too terrible on the non FDs although have definitely eaten more carbs and wine than I would usually. I hope that doesn't affect my weight loss too much.

Anyone with EDs is advised not to do any form of IF, unless under professional supervision. They are among the few people for whom this WOE can bring health problems.

I'll answer her on that thread.

You're right, it's best to wait until family illnesses or other distracting issues are sorted, before starting any new WOL.

I think you said you were BFing ? In that case, you need more calories on FDs than the rest of us. Dr Varady (renowned scientist) recommends 1000 cals, so I would take her advice. This should ensure your milk supply remains steady.

For FDs, we usually eat protein and veg, such as stews and soups, but avoid starches and most fruit. You can split your calories into 1-3 meals as you wish, but most of us find it easier to skip breakfast.
It is best to plan your meals, including calorie counts, the day before an FD. Try to eat healthily, no junk on FDs.

On NFDs, unless you over-eat, it is not usually necessary to calorie count. As a rough guide, aim for your TDEE (on MFP, this is the TDEE to maintain weight, not to lose. You lose via the 2 FDs).
Many people do 10% below TDEE for 3 days, to allow for more cals at the weekend.
No snacking between meals, but on NFDs you can add a couple of treats as desserts. Just try not to go mad.

It usually takes a couple of weeks to get used to 5:2, so allow yourself time and don't be too strict about FD calories s at first.
Most people do well on it, because it is a healthy and flexible WOL, which fits into normal life.
Xmas Smile
