Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

For those of us tempted to snack or graze over Christmas:

"little pickers wear bigger knickers"

MrsFlorrick · 21/12/2013 22:33

Bigchocfrenzy. Grin

What about those who blatantly scoff??

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 21/12/2013 22:41

Turkey
Thanks for the reminder. I'd forgotten that daylight periods start getting longer from tomorrow, thank goodness.

Did you shake your feathers and boogie with the Druids at Stonehenge ?

PS Damn right, I can catch any slacker - my HIIT includes sprints and mountain climb sprints
Xmas Grin

MrsFlorrick · 21/12/2013 22:42

Bigchoc. Mountain climbers are a killer. As you're not available I have Jillian Michaels to shout abuse at me while I do them. Smile

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 21/12/2013 22:55

MrsF
I can't fit any similar motto for scoffing; these doesn't flow well:
"Those who Frenz must their knickers mend"
"I love to Frenz and steal knickers from mens"
Blush
Better, or a bit morbid ?
"It wasn't a scoff that carried her off. It wasn't a coffin they carried her off in"
Xmas Smile
Maybe my muscles blocked the cals going to the creative side of my brain.
My FD had fasted spin and lifting, just finished at 500 cals.

More fasted training tomorrow before a big healthy, but late, lunch.

hopefulgum · 21/12/2013 23:00

MrsF, that silly godbotherer has no bloody idea. You look amazing in your photo.

As for your DH, I can relate. My Dh has a very close relationship with the ipad. In fact I put it away in a hiding place yesterday. I will bring it out on Christmas day. I am getting increasingly irritated, to the point where I might just bludgeon him death with a rolling pin, because he keeps telling me to "relax" and "chill out" about Christmas, when in actual fact it is his bloody family who are coming (all 22 of them) to our house for lunch on Christmas day.

He spends all of an hour doing something to contribute to the Christmas tidy up, then he has to recooperate for three hours reading his book. I will be very surprised if my marriage survives this F=@*ing Christmas. It makes me a wee bit sad that I have to do so much for Christmas, because I am really starting to hate this time of year. Isn't that awful? I am trying very hard to feel less overwhelmed and more joyful, but it isn't happening. I clearly need more Christmas spirit (or perhaps spirits? Hmm, might have to drink more alcohol...Xmas Grin)

Despite all this, I am determined to fit in two fast days before Christmas. I am doing it today (I hope) and tomorrow. Tomorrow shouldn't be too hard. I plan to spend about three hours at the hair salon being pampered and escaping the Christmas craziness at home. I will leave a list of jobs...

Bigchoc, your little saying will be ringing through my ears as I pass up on all the Christmas nibbles...

MrsFlorrick · 21/12/2013 23:04

Bigchoc GrinGrin men's knickers GrinGrin

Wine And pepper nuts. Very Christmassy. Aaaaaahh. Nice and relaxing.

PIL arrive tomorrow. Let the cookarama begin!!! At least I am well prepped. DD and I are doing some more baking while DS and DH pick them up from Kings x.

I bought Xmas outfits for DD and DS. They have two each. Two because I celebrate Christmas on the evening of 24th and we also celebrate on the 25th because we are in the UK.

DS has a lovely flannel check shirt from Petit Bateau and Polarn o Pyret jean and for the 25th he has Polarn grey cords and a Christmas top fromLittle White co with an elk on Smile

For DD I have a mauve cord dress from Little White co with a cashmere cardi in mauve with little sparkly angel wings knitted into the pattern on the back. With matching tights.
For the 25th I got her a dark grey smock type dress dotted with sparkly stars and matching tights in dark grey with silver sparkle stripes also from Little White co.

They are going to be so super cute. Two little blonde angels with blue eyes. DD has lovely curls. My hair is blonde but straight and I love that she has curls. Grin

Sorry I'm clearly affected by Wine

EarSlaps · 21/12/2013 23:04

Just caught up.

Eat- your son should certainly be congratulated on rivers of piss. Mine does tiny wees since he barely eats or drinks Grin.

Oh dear- Christmas eating has started here- pancakes for breakfast, chocolate, then Pizza Express, Christmas pud for tea and evening cheese and wine. I've got some earslaps out of the freezer for breakfast tomorrow, then we hit the road to travel to the other side of the country via Surrey. No doubt plenty of choc and sweets to keep boys quiet too. Oh well, it was all worth it Smile.

Took DS ice skating today- lots of fun.

MrsFlorrick · 21/12/2013 23:07

Hopeful. 22 for Christmas ShockShockShockShock. I almost fainted reading that. Wow. That's serious cooking!

Hats off to you.

I'm sort of glad im not the only one whose DH is oblivious moany and stuck to an iPad. Makes me feel less lonely. Apparently all my RL friends have perfect DHs Hmm

Drunken hugs to you all from me (prods Turkey and Bigchoc to sing "we are family, I got all my sisters with me.....").

MrsFlorrick · 21/12/2013 23:09

And hopeful. More hugs.

Earslaps. Congrats to your DS and his star status again. It's quite something out of 30. DD only has 10 in her class so its all much of a muchness.

MrsFlorrick · 22/12/2013 00:15

Or my personal fave, Ivory Spice granite

www.tomhowley.co.uk/kitchens/contemporary-shaker-kitchen/

If you want this one, you'll have to contact Pisani (a stone importer at Heathrow) and they can inform you on current stock and a good stone mason plus costs. And they will hone it for you. Smile

MrsFlorrick · 22/12/2013 00:16

Shit wrong thread Blush. Wine is clearly working Grin

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 22/12/2013 00:36

MrsF, Hopeful and all sisters doing the housework & parenting for two:

  • A man’s got to do what a man’s got to do..... A woman must do what he can’t.
  • If you are lumbered with an idle bugger, you have 2 choices: kick him out on his arse or kick him in the bollocks !

Kick him in the iPad too.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 22/12/2013 00:38

Your babies sound beautiful MrsF. Just like their mummy. You sound like a very proud and smitten mama.

Taking the positive in all situations, at least the selfish prick helped (used in loosest possible sense) to bring you three together. They'll always love you and remember the beautiful times during childhood you spent, nurturing and nourishing them.

Big pats on back, and another handful of pepper nuts!

BigChoc Dancing round Stonehenge??? Good grief no! Sounds far too energetic. I is also not a Druid.

You could chase me. But I'd probably just trip over my bum bag Xmas Shock.

Anyway, I am pmting. Am observing casual 16:8. Drinking bajillions of gallons of water. Hula hooping. Will start walking when less rushed off feet. Also don't eat brek ever. Rarely eat lunch. So am prob not as bad as sounds.

Would love to come to your boot camp though! I am a little rebellious/challenging at times. But I do like an Alpha who can kick my arse. Genuinely. It's tiring being the force of reckoning myself all the time! And I'm not even scary? Just determined and relentless at times Xmas Grin Must be a raised by bossy military fecker thing?

Takes another swig from bottle...

Yeah! Woohoo!! Here's another jukebox classic for ya MrsF - stand on the end of bed clutching your vino and start twerking (wtf that is!) while screeching singing..

R.E.S.P.E.C.T find out what it means to me....

Then on bit when goes '...sock it to him, sock it to him, sock it to him, sock it to him...' You could pepper nut him!!

Thought was waste of pepper nuts but then I thought... unless you pepper his nuts! Xmas Shock Xmas Grin [evil face]

..did you have any spare chillies??......

MrsFlorrick · 22/12/2013 01:12

Twerking. You made me laugh so much I woke up DH. He grumbled and I said "it could be worse I could be twerking and singing" GrinGrinGrin

Bigchoc. Kicking him in the iPad would really hurt him. GrinGrin

You've all made me laugh a lot tonight.

The though of me twerking and intermittently kicking him in the iPad is quite a picture. Shock

MrsFlorrick · 22/12/2013 01:14

I wouldn't pepper nut him turkey what a waste of delicious pepper nuts!!!!

Pepper nuts. So lovely and so addictive. Ate too many with my wine and feel a bit blurgh now. Wink

MrsFlorrick · 22/12/2013 01:15

Turkey. I'd dance around stone henge with you Wink. Although in current state after two glasses of wine it would be staggering (lightweight).

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 22/12/2013 01:21

MrsF
Your problem is you got all crazy about nothing .... and then you married him.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 22/12/2013 01:23

A Woman's Perfect Breakfast:

-She's sitting at the table with her gourmet coffee & Big Choc muffin
-Her DCs are on the cover of Business Week.
-Her boyfriend is on the cover of Playgirl.
...... And her husband is on the back of the milk carton

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 22/12/2013 01:25

I'm single from choice. I can choose 3 pets which have the same functions as a DH / DP:

  • A dog which growls every morning
  • A parrot which swears all weekend
  • And a cat which comes home late at night, stinking.
MrsFlorrick · 22/12/2013 01:30

Bigchoc on the perfect breakfast Grin

I've known DH for a really long time. Even
Before we got together. Things between us were always mutually respectful. He always used to pull his weight at home. No problem ever.

Until that awful birth experience with DD. everything changed. It's as if he lost respect for me because I didn't do it right or something. I don't know. After that its been downhill.

I do want to kick him in the nads/iPad and ask him what the fucking problem is and where did it all go wrong. But I suspect he doesn't think anything is wrong at all. So I don't ask. Sad

Bigchoc. I'm going to take up lifting at the gym in 2014 and then I can swing him around by his ankles after. Bet he won't dare to shirk responsibilities after that!!

rubbishfamily333 · 22/12/2013 08:22

Morning seems like there was lots of WineWineWine going on here last night, I was fasting as it took me a few days to recover from my Christmas party. I'm hoping it has undone the damage, I will weigh myself soon to find out Hmm so an more fasts going on before Christmas?

I'm hoping to fast on Monday but may have a date so will have to cancel, any tips if I can't do it? Maybe 16:8 for a few days until Christmas? Although I'm thinking 16:8 can't mean fast all day then eat/drink what you like all evening?

I will enjoy my food over Christmas but I'm not prepared to go off track as I havnt felt this positive about loosing weight for a long time.

I can't belive Christmas has come so quickly Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 08:26

MrsF H not thinking anything isn't wrong doesn't stop you from having a serious conversation with him. You get one life and it is too long to spend so much of it in misery.

I am going to brave Waitrose today. I am not prepared to do any supermarket shopping with the kids - they really are sods at times when I say I need to go to X and buy some food - and I need a few more bits. DH said he would get them Tuesday morning before work but I want to do it plus I might miss out on extra treats.

I have had words with the kids how they never go without, always have lovely things every day, at the moment they are having baked goods daily and it annoys me that they add to my work because they don't want to go to the supermarket.

I have bought them chocolate spoons to eat their Christmas cereal with and when I had dd and ds2 with me I said to pick a cereal they could eat with warm milk as I had a surprise. For various reasons we ended up with rice crispies and when he got home ds1 said "Rice crispies, for Christmas day breakfast?!" in a clearly not very exciting are they voice. I was not happy. I told him I had bought a surprise for breakfast and not to be so bloody rude and ungrateful.

Doing roast gammon today. Going to try just the one meal today.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 08:56

rubbishfamily - Enjoy your date! Grin. Normally I just eat what I need morning and evening on a Sunday as we always have a roast dinner but today I am trying to just have the roast. I feel like I need to feel a bit empty. Monday I will fast, Tuesday I will try for a light day and then Wed and Thursday I will just eat what I want but not go silly. I do intend to have some chocolate though as I have a spare box and some cheapy fizzy wine as I haven't had alcohol for a long time and feel like being a bit silly. I am a cheap date as a sniff of a wine gum is enough to make me a bit tipsy Grin.

somewherebecomingrain · 22/12/2013 09:05

hopeful thanks for your interest! I am fantastically touchéd and although I know you'll prob never make it here you go!

It was
125g soya flour
25g coconut flour
100g ground almonds

(But you could use any combo of these low carb flour subs. But not more than say 50-75g coconut flour cause its super absorbent and will dry the cake out).

50g coconut oil (I put in 125 and it was too oily) and butter to taste up to 200g (remember low fat cakes are a False economy you will just binge on them esp if high carb).

50 g any sugar
50ml brown rice syrup (pure glucose which lustig says gets burned off and is the least likely sugar to end up as fat)

1 grated apple
1-200g blueberries frozen or fresh

3 eggs

2 teaspoon baking powder.

It is caky and just sweet enough but you won't want more than a slice. That's a result for me (I recently at an entire Spanish apple cake in a sitting). I might put a few spoons of icky sugar sub in next time and see if it blends into the background natural sugars.

mrsf dare you try the mumsnet relationship board? as there must have been something before the birth and they will have lots of, er, helpful suggestions. Hugs.
