Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks for the congratulations. Other than my DH, I've not told anyone else I'm giving this a go. I think I want to see that it works and then say what I've been doing. I'm still on maternity leave, so that makes it easier!

Thanks too for the LOF explanation. So that's what I did today then? Just drank tea/water until dinner time.

Well done pandarific, a fellow newbie! How did your first day go?

Gym stuff

Kettle Bells

No higher risk of injury with this.
Just apply the usual caution when starting any new exercise.

However, make sure you have sufficient space - beware of anyone near you, also the gym mirrors.
Remember Newton's 3rd law and don't suddenly release the kettle bell mid-swing !

It's OK to lift weights if you have a cold, but not to maximum intensity.
Generally best to avoid cardio, other than a brisk walk, well wrapped up or on a treadmill.

EarSlaps you've got company/support for tmw if you do decide to.

I'm hoping to wake up and have shaken off the weekends woes by then. So will be nice to know I'm not the only one struggling Xmas Grin I'm suffering from a touch of Bssh's Mincepie Syndrome!

Carbs crave carbs! Evil buggers! Had two chicken fillet ciabattas tonight as my very nutritious Mon night meal. But it was the lunchtime mince pieing, last nights pizza and the Christmas pud afters I had yesterday that have wreaked havoc with my system/control.

Am also on a reduce caffeine drive tmw as I think all the extra coffees I've been having are a) bloating me b) lowering my tolerance levels of .... uh....everything! Xmas Grin

Yeah Septum it's veryyyy cold and living in the north makes matters worse.
Pls don't do that at the gym when am right behind u doing a doggie yoga pose, lol.
So thankful schools are on Christmas break around here which meanders d kids are in bed longer just that I cannot stay in bed for as long as I want, duty calls Xmas Sad.
Can't remember who told me those packaged soups are crap, u are so, so right. I made one of the soups but it tasted like detergent and I threw it away.
Tomorrow is a NFD but am thinking of doing a 20/4 if I can manage it just so I can splurge on the weekend.
Have a good night my friends.
Great title the new thread has, am I thinking or not Xmas Smile.

Funny

I felt dizzy and nauseated a couple of times when I was getting used to fasted training and overdid things HIIT.
Otherwise never.
I presume you hadn't trained just before / after your meal or ypu would have mentioned it.

I expect your bod just needs to get used to 5:2

If you feel concerned, ease in more gradually to this WOE:

  • If you are doing 36-hr fasts, then reduce to 24 hr ones
  • If you are doing LOFs, try solid food FDs instead
  • Replace one of your FDs by a min-fast (up to 1000 cals) or 16:8

Hi just checking into new thread.

Going to go for a run in the morning I think.

How do you not think about food constantly? Ever since I decided I needed to look at my food intake its all I ever think about. Getting upset because I cant have those cakes or bicuits or getting upset because I have eaten something at the wrong time. I have just had a couple of biscuits. Mind you Im not polishing a whole pack any more like I used to.

Right need motivation to not only eat less, but also move more. I have no motivation or willpower today. Hopefully tomorrow I will wake up full of motivation. Though once I have my running kit on (which I will put on straight away) I will feel more motivated.

Looking forward to 2nd Jan for my first real fast day. It will make me feel better.

Right little target for me tomorrow. Go for a run. Once Ive accomplished that Ive done it and achieved something.

Talking of the gym am I right in thinking that Planks are one of the best exercises for toning the tum? Im thinking of undertaking a 30 day Plank challenge in Jan.

Turkey, Betsy

This just cheered me up:

We planned NND only until the Christmas parties started, not for the whole month. My parties were on 8th, 12th and next is Friday.
So, NND (at least my version thereof) has ended.
Xmas Grin

However, I will be mostly ADFing until end of my hols, to achieve SWATH.

How about the two of you ?
^^

Joining the thread, marking my place but haven't actually read through it yet, but I know I need some support. I have been dismal at maintaining the 5:2 and have put on weightXmas Sad
Every week I decide to start anew and then temptation rises up and swallows me whole!

Why, why,why does there have to be so much chocolates, cakes, fruit mince pies (a personal favourite of mine), shortbread, etc etc everywhere I go? And why oh why can't I just do what I did before when I did the 5:2 - remind myself that I can have it tomorrow and abstain for today?

I do believe that part of the problem is that at this time of the year I am exhausted ( I am a teacher in the southern hemisphere and I am approaching my long break), and we have had two or three social events every weekend for the past month!

So, today is a new start. I am fasting today. I have managed to only drink tea since getting up and it is now 7am. I feel fine and I can make it to lunchtime!

I have learnt that I can't do my usual exercise on a fast day. I know many people can, but I just can't swim 1500 metres and feel fine. I get out of the pool feeling wobbly and faint, then I feel sick. So on fast days I go for a walk instead.

My mate has been doing the 5:2 since February and she was a healthy weight (slim) when she started. She did/does it for health reasons. Anyway, she has lost 5kg since then. So I am motivated by her success.

Biscuits

On an FD, junk is just not advisable, because it will make you hungrier and you should use those 500 calories to provide your body with nutrients.

However, you can always have it tomorrow

On NFDs, don't try to give up all high-calorie food or even junk; it is too difficult and not necessary for weight loss.
If you want pizza, or burgers and chips, or some biscuits etc, then have them.
Just stay within the calorie limit you planned for the day.

Bigchoc. Thanks

Annielewis. Thank you (takes a bow)

Biscuits. Grin You're making me smile. That is how it started for me. I suddenly became able to eat just a couple of biscuits rather than the whole packet. (Or packets....).

I can now take it or leave it. And I plan my indulgences. Trust me I have plenty and plenty of frenzies.

I also worked out that biscuits and bakery is evil. It's far higher in cals than choc or cheese in the sense that you could eat half the calories in cheese or choc and feel full to bursting. Biscuits don't seem to satisfy the same way.

Hi just checking in to say had mini fast today was supposed to be fd but toddler drove me to a handful of macademias! That with my homemade chicken and veg soup and a coffee with milk probably threw me over 500. So I'll fast tomorrow a few miso soups during day then a low cal ready meal I picked up in waitrose. Tomorrow I shall be diligent as only one dc to look after. Goodluck and well done everyone. I'm seeing some of my in-laws this weekend- the dread I am very self conscious of my weight with them. They are all So skinny with athletic type horse riding bodies and I'm a little pear shaped potato loving peasant from the north.
Mil asked me tonight how my figure was! Only 7 weeks postpartum- I was shocked! Anyway I digress. I will be lose this 2 stone I will!

BigChoc I am playing it by ear, with the ghostly shadow of my usual routine in place. I will adapt it around any def bad days (like 25th), but I actually think I'll suffer (physically) too much if I stop completely anyway!

At the very least I expect to be sticking to the tips and tricks that make this wol so much easier.

Would love to achieve SWATH, not sure will happen but you never know! I'll still be near enough 1 and half stone lighter than Jan last year, so it's a great start to New Year!

And then it's hardcore all the way!!

No mercy in 2014 until this Fatty Mcfatty is a Slimmy McJimmy!

At seven weeks PP I had over 6 stone to lose both times.

Luckily no one asked me how my figure was Wink or I'd have sat on 'em.

Hopeful

Everyone needs some time to adjust to fasted exercise, but it varies according to individual body type, fitness, blood sugar levels, metabolism ....

I started cautiously, but adapted within a few days. I think Bssh also had no real problem.

Suggestions:

  • Try other forms of exercise on your FDs. Some people can't do cardio, such as swimming. Try lifting weights, doing pressups, squats, abs ....

  • Drink a double espresso 10 mins before exercise. This can help release fat stores for energy.

Sweetie - wow a few weeks after having your baby they are asking questions like that? They should give you a break, it seems terribly early to worry about loosing weight!

Report
TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 16/12/2013 23:44

Sweetie if that was all you had today then there is really no reason to abandon it as a fd.

Anything up to 700 would still be classed as a fd here.

You have to be really careful you are not going ott with this. It will make it so much harder for you to stick to, and I guarantee will slow your weight loss down rather than speed it up!

Mil and the rest of 'perfect' brigade can go shart themselves!

In the grand scheme of life on this planet, with all the things that go on in the world, and compared to how much you love your little family..... Do they/what they think/say/do really matter???

For want of a better way to put this...... Fuck 'em!

Do it for yourself, your health and for life with your dcs. But do it properly (not try to rush) or you'll just make yourself miserable. And that, unlike horsey faces, we do care about!!

You sound pretty hardcore to me, as you're basically continuing with NND. Good for you !

I'll continue to have NN periods or 2 weeks or so as a healthy break.
However, I don't see NNs as a WOL. I love my vices, especially gluttony ^^ too much to give up any of 'em.

Sounds like most of our chums here will be busy over the hols, so will be mostly just you and me, babe, singing our daft duet.
Xmas Grin
Never mind, we'll keep each other on the straight and narrow, or whatever approximation we can manage.

!!! We shall both achieve SWATH !!!
