Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

emma, anybody else worrying about food:

Don't be so hard on yourselves. This is a really enjoyable WOL that depends on eating at or above TDEE on some days (OK, Frenzies are optional) .

To be healthy and sustainable, don't go very low cal for more than 2-3 days at a time, or have more FDs than doing ADF (which is for hard core only)

For some of us (post-menopause, starting at healthy BMI, greedy) weight loss may be very slow, but that is just the rate your mind and body are ready to sustain. Don't try to force things too much.

So, just chill and enjoy the best eating WOL there is !

Seriously - chocolate shortage? This is an birdie piss take surely?? She couldn't even provide a link........

turkey have you passed out in shock or are you winding us all up? Grin

annielewis · 11/12/2013 14:18

Ps BCF you are an inspiration - you look bloody fab and fly in the face of all that shit about 'be grateful for how you look today - its the best you'll ever look because you're getting older' bullshit. Good on ya!

Breadandwine · 11/12/2013 14:32

Annoyingly my lap top has made me have pages on here. I don't like pages!!

Toffee I don't like pages either, but are you sure it's not Mumsnet, which has restricted the number of posts on a page to 500? Used to be 1000.

I've now bookmarked 500 posts page two. If I needed to go back to a post prior to 500, I would go to page one.

HTH!

B&W

BsshBossh · 11/12/2013 14:42

BigChoc looking at your body and seeing the kgs you lift/press/push I am mightily relieved. I've been aiming for super heavy but now realise I can get the body I want on less kgs. The kgs you do are much more achievable for me. Hurrah!

BsshBossh · 11/12/2013 14:43

BigChoc, forgot to ask, what kgs do you lift for upper body work like overhead/shoulder presses, bench presses, rows, tricep/biceps work etc (if you do them)?

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 11/12/2013 14:50

Calm down everybody! I have been busy!!

'Twas not a lie either! (huffy face)

When have I ever lied to any of you, or given the impression I would huh??....

It was in one of the papers on The Wright Stuff this morning. Can't remember which, because I wasn't paying much attention until I heard the nature of the story!

But for all you lazy arses out there (cough cough BigChoc/AnnieL (call yourself a twin!) I will have a look online and post something on here, to clear my name.

Not that I should have to mind!! (huffier face)

EatRisky ... She (BCF) may not be directly responsible for the extinction of cocoa plants or whatever it is, but she is most certainly responsible for hoovering up most of what's left for the rest of us!

Let's turn on her!!!

Tie her down and do exercises in front of her that she can't join in with. Or roll about in rice pudding. Let's find a way to use nut butter as a new energy fuel making it illegal to eat, so as not to diminish supplies too soon!!

Another one in awe of BigChoc's fab abs :o You are my ab inspiration!

Emma it is really hard when you have an early start. I always found WW hard when I had to get up very early and commute - you were just awake more hours in the day so more time to feel hungry. Don't be too hard on yourself.

Going to try another 24 hours from now. It's not ideal and definitely not the normal plan but this week is a bit of a pigfest so trying to squeeze fasts in where I can.

I made the mistake of getting on the scales this morning and after all my goodness yesterday I had lost 0.5lbs Hmm Must resist scales! Still, my tummy definitely felt and looked flatter.

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 11/12/2013 14:57

Bsssh just spotted your photos. Another inspirational loss. I am loving all these photos, they are really motivating. Might get DH to take some of me!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 11/12/2013 15:02

Btw.... Hi to Loopsy and anyone else new I have missed!

Ask away for any advice or concerns because guaranteed one of us has probably had similar if not same issues/experiences to deal with on this woe/wol.

DingDongDucky (shouts loudly so everyone can hear) THANKYOU FOR LETTING ME HAVE YOUR SHARE OF THE LAST REMAINING CHOCOLATE. VERY KIND AND VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

....(looks around for TIP to try and arrange first dibs on hers too).....

Any chocolate non-lovers please pm me for some very important fasting stuff Xmas Wink

Welcome to the mad house loopsy :)

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 11/12/2013 15:12

Right! I have googled 'chocolate going to run out'

Was very difficult!

This 'ere was first newspaper result that came up. So could've been from the Daily Slither.

Plenty of other stories online too though by looks of things. Including an article in Independent from 2010!!!!

They've known for years. The bastards!!

All to do with increase in demand for rubber plants from what have read.
Tbh this morning after I heard the words 'no more chocolate' my ears started ringing, it all went dark and the next thing I remember was waking up on the floor!

OP posts:
annielewis · 11/12/2013 15:18

turkey have googled and it's true!!!!

You are a cruel cruel bird to suggest exercise/rice pudding torture for poor BCF, I know if we are all honest we should all take some responsibility for the choc shortages.... Some more than others! WinkWink

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 11/12/2013 15:19

PMSL at this Turkey. Rubber be damned!

Baloostika · 11/12/2013 16:08

Such sense of humor Turkey.
BCF u are truly an inspiration to us younger women in here. I'm a gym bunny too and people think I overdo exercises (remember when I first posted here I said I have a tendency for overdoing things).
36-40 hrs LOF started.

Talkinpeace · 11/12/2013 16:10

Toffeesponge
yes, mixing up fast days makes a huge difference because your body cannot predict when it will need to store / use so it gets on and uses ....

had a burger for supper at the O2 last night - gave most of my chips to DS, but drank my beer. Then had a red bull before driving home after the gig. An odd supper but a fantastic evening.

MrsFlorrick · 11/12/2013 16:42

Chocolate can't run out. Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

(Sticks fingers in ears and sings lalalala)

Can't post off to Waitrose to stock pile the words remaining chocolate.

BsshBossh · 11/12/2013 16:50

Baloostika I'll try for a 36 hr LOF tomorrow.

Had a nice, normal eating day today. I'm still surprised at how much my appetite has shrunk. I always think, "Uh oh, I'm eating too much!" but when I double check in the fabulous MFP I realise I'm not.

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 11/12/2013 16:50

two milky coffees is my total for the day so far BUT I have been so cold all day - its been foggy and hasn't got above 3c all day brrr (I'm ducky btw)

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 11/12/2013 16:51

bssh I love MFP, esp when I add in exercise Xmas Grin

BsshBossh · 11/12/2013 16:53

Keep going inamerry/ducky.

I like chocolate but love cheese more so y'all can have my choc share Grin.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 11/12/2013 16:54

Today I have discovered that its hard to hula hoop whilst watching comedy programmes. Nice extra workout though Xmas Wink

BsshBossh · 11/12/2013 16:55

ducky when I calorie counted I used to deliberately exercise more just to get more calories! It's such a good idea.
