Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Whim You look lovely and with such elegant gowns.

EarSlaps
You look wonderful too, especially the aural adornments !
Flowers Xmas Grin

Funny Well done on holding out until supper.
I agree with the SEdweller about avoiding starchy carbs like toast or porridge on FDs. Most of us (but not all) also avoid fruit. Just go for protein and low carb veg.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 10/12/2013 23:06

I have an Xmas party Thursday evening, so I planned an LFD tomorrow and a tiny Thursday lunch.
BUT my bod insisted it needed supper today after a very strenuous cross-Fit and it sneaked an extra 1600 cals when I wasn't looking

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 10/12/2013 23:53

Turkey Glad to hear you are keeping virtuously to NND, but saddened to hear you are going for fake choc instead of the real stuff.
Sad *
No wonder you are sharting, probably your tum indicating its disgust and disappointment. Check your pretend choc doesn't contain Maltilol, or prepare to be the best customer at your local Marks and Sparks knickers dept.
Shock
Well done though on 11.5. Sounds like an SV to me ! [loud cheers]
Flowers Xmas Grin
Anyone who doesn't manage SWART can have a bootcamp of lovely press-ups, situps and lifting, driven by very loud Big Choc Bellows. leather whips and studded hoops.

Yes, we must think of a name for our double act
^^

My suggestion for our first album title:
"Big Choc Kicks the Big Gobbler in the Sharty Pants"

BsshBossh · 11/12/2013 05:57

BigChoc just seen your photos. Wow, you look amazing, I love your muscle tone! I can see why you can get away with alot of frenzies now - those muscles need fuel Grin. How much are you deadlifting, squating, pressing etc?

BsshBossh · 11/12/2013 05:59

*squatting

Emmabryant123 · 11/12/2013 06:06

Fail again.
Ate breakfast before work in a minute with fear of being hungry.I need to get over the fear of hunger.
Had two eggs scrambled with two rashers of grilled bacon . Around 400 cals. Planning about 1200 cals again today . Then have done two mini fasts in a row and will defiantly skip breakfast tomorrow and see how I feel.
I'll only feel hungry from 10 ish till 6 now, so why not deal with the hunger for three more hours hmm :/

Not2bObvious · 11/12/2013 06:47

How is it a fail Emma? Did you want to extend your fast or something? And I reckon it was under 350 Wink I stretch scrambled eggs by only having 1 full and a white, saves about 70 cals, don't notice any difference. There's a good chance that'll keep you going for hours anyway, you might still manage a sub 1000 day which might take the pressure off the next 2 days?
I did a 1200 yesterday, aiming for a sub 1000 today and proper 500 tomorrow. Would love to see a maintain this week (11.1.6) as a loss after last weeks work do and then weekend munching. This day 2 weeks the kids will be banging down the door to see what Santa brought, can't wait Xmas Grin

Not2bObvious · 11/12/2013 06:48

*loss after last week would be unlikely - jeez, learn to finish you sentences woman!

EarSlaps · 11/12/2013 07:00

Wow BigChoc, your arms are amazing! I think I need to get lifting to get arms like that. You have an amazing figure. Plus I need to preorder your album Grin.

dingdongduckyfuzz · 11/12/2013 07:28

Wow bigchoc amazing muscle definition! remind me to keep on the right side of you!
festive and not2b I think I'm like you, once I eat something, no matter how low carb/cal, I'm much hungrier than before I ate. I'm going for LOF today until soup this evening
turkey you are hilarious! I don't know where you get the energy/imagination from!
whimsical congrats on reaching target and looking fabulous in that dress!

I think sometimes we are a bit hard on ourselves on here, we are all doing brilliantly and gradual loss with a brand new WOE is far more sustainable than rapid diets. Good luck fasters!

postmanpatsreindeer · 11/12/2013 08:09

Yes ducky I'm in the 'being too hard on yourself' camp this morning - I'm trying not to be disappointed that I 'only' dropped 1kg after fasting yesterday! I have just had a bowl of muesli at my desk so have already put about 300g back on Hmm

BsshBossh · 11/12/2013 08:14

I agree with dingdong some of us are definitely too hard on ourselves. And we all need to remember this is not a VLCD (very low calorie diet). It's VLC just twice (5:2) or thrice (4:3) a week and normal TDEE eating the rest of the time. If you consistently eat under TDEE your body will adjust downwards and hold on to the fat, not give it up. We need to keep it simple. And to take a dose of my own lesson, I will not do a mini FD today as planned. Will just keep it simple with my usual 5:2.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 11/12/2013 10:30

BIGCHOC Good grief woman! Sit down before you fall off the monkey bars with shock/disgust/concern and listen carefully......

Have no fear - it was REAL chocolate. 70% min cocoa solids 100% genuine chocolate.

I was trying to disguise my breaking of NND and your frenzy obviously affected your ability to spot it.

I don't DO FAKE! Would rather lick the floor than consume anything made up of ingredients I can't pronounce/spell/can be grown.

Well the Christmas post is getting between me and my hooping! Still waiting for it. So just squatting away instead.

SHART WATCH: I am fine everyone who was asking. Was a one off. Ears have improved, as has general mood, so think it was bug related and seems to have now sodded orf thankfully!

Just want to have a little rave about this woe/wol again. It is my second fast day of the week today. I woke up feeling a rare slight hunger (am not normally a morning eater) and my first thought was... Oh it's a fast day, must be good!....then I thought.... well I do have 500 cals if I want to eat, it doesn't have to be liquidish only day....and then I thought.... if that's not enough I can always cancel fasting today and do it tmw instead, or fri or make it 6:1 or have a few mini fasts instead this week.

I LOVE the flexibility!!! I have been doing 5:2 since 19th sept. Have lost 1 stone & 1 pound. I have stalled for a couple of weeks a few times, but the trend has always been downwards. Never upwards. I haven't even incorporated any exercise properly yet myself. And, no two weeks have been the same! I move my days around, change my eating/drinking habits to suit that fd mood and it works!!!!!!

I love it!!

Bloody hell .... NEWS FLASH we interrupt this post to bring you some breaking news....

I am sat on my porridgey arse on laptop with news on in background....

brace yourself ladies and gents, seriously grab hold of something, because apparently (whispers) chocolate is going to run out by 2020.

(Gasps in horror!)

BigChoc get your arse over to Cocoa Bean Land, forget about my sharty backside, and give them all a good kick up the cocoa plants!!

Fast day abandoned. Much chocolate will be consumed today for shock.

Emmabryant123 · 11/12/2013 10:34

Decided today is a nfd. However might not have dinner if not hungry as had breakfast about 6:00am: scrambled eggs and bacon
Just had a yoghurt muller light as hungry
Lunch is tuna sandwich with a salad.
Might not be hungry for dinner so might not have it hmm.
Tomorrow though I will not eat breakfast and I will fast!

Dotty342kids · 11/12/2013 10:54

Running out of chocolate Shock? How can this be?
Quick, get thyselves off to the nearest store and get stocked up folks Smile

loopsyloo2 · 11/12/2013 11:08

hello everybody Grin
ive been lurking for a while but i thought id just pop out and make myself known!
Ive been trying this WOE for few weeks but i generally only manage one fast day and then eat loads the next day, its tough because i have to cook for partner and kids and i cant resist the food once ive made it! how do u all do it??
i try to run but its been so cold recently and it really puts me off!
also Im only a short little thing, almost as wide as i am tall im afraid haha so my TDEE is so low it doesnt feel like ive eaten at all! moan moan.
Anyway well done everyone on your great losses your an inspiration!

BetsyJingleBells · 11/12/2013 11:21

Hi loopsy :)

You can eat the same as your kids and partner in the evening, just omit the carb element and add loads of veg/salad instead. Most evening meals aren't that calorific once you remove the pasta/potatoes/rice or whatever.

The eating loads the next day thing balance out in the end - but if you remember the NO SNACKING rule (which we should all adhere to generally anyway) then you should be ok. Don't buy naughty snacky stuff so it's not hanging around in the cupboards - better for the whole family!

And use MFP or keep some kind of food diary - it makes you much more aware of what you're eating and takes away the mindless nibbling habit we all get into so easily.

dingdongduckyfuzz · 11/12/2013 11:22

Hi loopsyloo2. I fast on days when I now I only have to feed DCs before intake them out again to activities, so I'm not tempted as I don't have time! I have got into the habit now, so we do this 2-3 evenings a week and eat as a family the rest of the time

Turkey - you can have my share of the remaining chocolate [frgin]. Totally agree with your love for this WOL, it totally works because of the flexibility

dingdongduckyfuzz · 11/12/2013 11:23

OMG should try checking my posts! I'm sure you know what I mean!

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 11/12/2013 12:56

loopy before dh started fasting I would either give him a portion if mine and let him forage, or I'd only have a small amount of carbs and more of the other elements. the kids often get something I won't eat myself so I'm not tempted at all.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 11/12/2013 13:08

Hi everyone

Annoyingly my lap top has made me have pages on here. I don't like pages!!

I am still 11 stone 3 so happy with that. Eating today. Planning on at least a fast day tomorrow if not a 36 hour LOF.

Have made bacon and cheese bread and that is currently baking in the oven.

Welcome to our new people and good luck to those fasting. It doesn't seem as cold today so I probably would have been okay if I had been fasting, though it was 6 degrees when I left to take the children to school and 1.5 when we arrivedShock.

Baloostika · 11/12/2013 13:08

Good morning MNeters.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 11/12/2013 13:09

Turkey !!!!

!!! WTF @@@ !!! Chocolate due to run out by 2020 !!!

^^

Is this one of those "world will come to an end if you don't go to church twice weekly and stop scratching your bum ?" scares ?

If that's due to Global Warming / Cooling / Buggering About, then we must junk cars & planes immediately.

This is a serious threat to life as we know it !!

Did you read it somewhere

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 11/12/2013 13:20

anyone else think chocolate running out mast be due to bigchoc and her frenzies? Wink Wink Wink

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 11/12/2013 13:30

in the hope I was just having a bad dream beamed over by that evil avian, I'll return to normal service:
Hmm
Thanks Bssh, EarSlaps, Ducky. I am building up my muscles in case I must fight for my fair (20 x everyone else's) share of dwindling choc reserves.

Bssh ^^
You must be sooo glad to be able to resume your training.
My entire motivation for gyming is to maintain health and fitness into old age. I wish to be able to still hammer hunks if I reach my nineties, or what's the point ?

So, I am very careful to avoid injury to joints or pelvic floor.
For barbells, I restrict myself to max 55 kg and I mostly lift 40-50kg for the large muscle groups. For squats, I protect my knees and don't go above 30kg, but I do 120kg on the leg press machine instead. I'm trying to improve my chinup form, because I currently jump up the first few inches, for each rep.

I do a lot of bodyweight exercises without barbells, usually in my weekly CrossFit (hundreds of pressups, tricep presses, deep squats, abs). I also do weighted abs on my own - My favourite muscle group and where I usually thrash even the biggest hunk.

I concentrate now on HIIT, which has massively improved my fitness and I think my cardio health. I spin 3-4 times per week Boxing is also great for this.
