Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

whimsical well done on reaching goal. Terrific achievement!
Baloostika I sometimes end a FD on a cuppa soup eg Ainsley Harriot 65 cal one but not too often as I don't like the idea of the chemicals/artificial ingredients. If I eat food or soup on a FD then I prefer it to be real and packed with nutrition. Having said that this clean, healthy eating is recent; I used to enjoy cuppa soups, 10 cal jellies and Options hot chocs in my early days of fasting.

postmanpatsreindeer · 10/12/2013 19:51

Well done whimsical great work!

I want to go to bed - skipped the gym as I got delayed in the bank, I've been yawning all day and I'm on my 6th peppermint tea. DD2 is baking biscuits and when she's done I have to make spaghetti Bol for tomorrow's dinner.

I don't want to eat, I just want to sleep!

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 20:03

Baloostika for that number of calories I would recommend the Heinz soup sachets. I had the minestrone one earlier and it was 72 cals (others are slightly higher). They are actually really nice and you feel like you are having proper soup. For a slim a soup type thing I think I had a Tesco one before it was supposed to be hot and sour or similar. It was lower cals and quite nice.

I have this stupid, stubborn thing that I want to get to 9pm before I have my 400 (or more cals). That way I will have gone 24 hours with 100 cals. But I am actually really getting hungry now. Anyone else find the last hour or so of a fast hard? Is it just all in the mind, knowing you can eat soon?

Going to do a bit of work to try and distract myself. Then going to make something nice to eat and watch rubbish on the telly :)

EarSlaps · 10/12/2013 20:05

Baloostika, to be honest I think you'd get more flavour with fewer calories from a hot bovril or a miso soup. Cup a soups can be yummy but I think some can taste pretty artificial too. I guess it just depends on your personal preference.

FD here, nothing apart from hot bovril with Tabasco until 4pm when I had s few slices of black pudding, yum. Going to have baked egg for dinner.

Have sold tons of clothes on my local Facebook selling page today. I am never putting that weight back on now!

MrsF, I love those cinnamon buns so much. I even postponed my fast day to today as I had some left yesterday. I rather overindulged over the weekend on them!

Does anyone else NOT fluctuate much on weight? Now I'm maintaining my weight never seems to go lower than 9st2 or higher than 9st4. I tend to weigh the same after a FD as after a pig out weekend Hmm.

EarSlaps · 10/12/2013 20:08

Oh and whimsical- well done and you look amazing! Must post a pic soon

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 20:08

Whimsical congratulations :) You look fab in that dress!

I do find the big WL stories really inspiring. Did many of you lose more than 2-3 stone? I'm trying to pluck up the courage to take some before photos.

Bsssh good to know that you were a bit more lenient at the start. The 10 cal jelly sounds like a great idea to me Blush

Should I avoid eating protein before bed? Was thinking about an omelette at 9 but wondering whether it will keep me awake? Is it better to have something with toast?

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 20:09

Earslaps the weight staying the same thing sounds pretty amazing! Is there a recipe for these cinnamon buns?

MrsFlorrick · 10/12/2013 20:12

Whimsical. Well done!! Goal for you!!Thanks

DC were up at 5 am this morning. They are already over excited about Xmas and can't sleep. It's going to be a long couple of weeks....

I'm shattered. Sitting on the bed MNing. H is huffing and puffing because I should be downstairs wrapping presents and tidying up (kitchen diner and playroom are tip like after all the baking and DC going ballistic earlier)

Just can't be arsed really. I would lay down and sleep but H would only come and wake me up shortly and then I'd be tired and really angry.

Yes postmanpatscats. I hear you about wanting sleep now!

Balloo. Have a cup a soup. When I started fasting I used all sorts of crutches to get me through a fast. Cup a soups, zero noodles and zero rice etc etc. not very nutritious but it helps get you into this way of eating. Once you're a veteran like Bssh, Betsy and Bigchocfrenzy then you can think about ditching all that and eating very clean.

Do take the advice from I think TIP re eating lowish carb on FD. It can help you. Makes you feel less hungry. White carb really revives the appetite. Fish is excellent. It's lower cal than chicken beef. And easy to cook

To make like simple Balloo, get frozen fish (cheaper and will keep so you always have some available-waitrose frozen fish is amazing). Take out of freezer and cook in oven for 20 mins in a small parcel made out of foil or grease proof paper. Small tiny knob of butter and parsley (again frozen parsley and herbs helps so much). It goes with ANY veg. Stir fry greens, salad, grilled mushroom. Whatever you have.

A piece of plaice is about 85cal say 15 cal for butter and parsley. And another 100 cal of veg. 200 cal tasty meal in minutes.

Oh and prawns. V low cal and so tasty. Garlic prawn. So good.

Am making myself hungry. Need to go and deal with mr huffy downstairs and the DCs destruction. Hmm

MrsFlorrick · 10/12/2013 20:16

Earslaps. GrinGrin

And yes my weight doesn't do much at the mo. I have spent 6 weeks bouncing up and down the same 2 lbs!! Annoying because I have 6 left to lose. It would have been good to do it before Xmas and new year but given my long stall and all those cinnamon snails and Xmas food heading my way, I think it's impossible.

Although I'm glad that my weight hasn't gone up obviously! That would be annoying.

MrsFlorrick · 10/12/2013 20:24

Easlaps!!! I've just looked on your profile! You are wearing cinnamon snails (Earslaps). Grin. Now that's funny

And you look amazing! Jillian Michaels would be proud of it! Wow. She could bounce a quater off your butt (ripped in 30 stylee).

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 10/12/2013 20:26

I am sure you were lovely before Baloostika.

I am not sure the 5:2 guys have made me a better person as I am rubbish at over eating - and sometimes at eating enough - now GrinWink. I am also a lot smaller a person Grin.

EarSlaps · 10/12/2013 20:33

FunnyFestive- MrsF posted a recipe but there's a similar one here. They are yum.

MrsF, alas the lady with the earslaps is not me. Tip found that picture for me so I added it to the profile. The other picture is me after I finished shred. I now have a bit of definition on my abs, and I'm waiting until I finish 6w6p to post another Smile.

whimsicalname · 10/12/2013 20:42

Thank you all! I wish I had some better before ones!

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 21:07

I made it!

I feel a huge sense of achievement having made it until 9pm. Think it was important to me psychologically to prove that I could do it!

Thanks Earslaps those buns look lovely! I'm a bit of a scaredy-cat when it comes to anything that has to be put in warm places etc but those look nice enough to tempt me!

EarSlaps · 10/12/2013 21:12

Here is MrsF's recipe- I'd copied it to my notes so copying it back.

"These are Danish cinnamon rolls. Sorry!

The direct translation is "cinnamon snails" which doesn't sound appetising but beyond yum.

Good for any wintery time of year but very Christmassy.

The Dough:
50g of fresh yeast (you can use dried but you need to convert. Think its 14g of dried)
0.5l warm (hand warm not hot) milk
150g of soft butter
1 egg whisked together
850g plain flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
150g sugar
2 teaspoon crushed/powdered cardamom.

  • mix yeast into warm milk. Add butter then egg and mix.
Mix flour cardamom and salt and mix it into the milk/egg/butter mixture. Stir until it forms a dough. Knead dough for 5 mins Leave dough to raise for 30min.

The Filling:
150g of soft butter
100g of sugar (I prefer brown)
4 teaspoons of cinnamon

  • mix all of the above together

The "Snails":

Part dough into two. Roll into two rectangles circa 30cm x 40cm
Spread the cinnamon butter filling on both.
Then roll each one together (like a roulade) and cut into pieces of 1.5cm.
Put onto baking paper and glaze with whisked egg
You can add some pearl sugar for decoration (hard to find but Ocado has it in their "forrin" section).

Bake at 220c for 12 to 15 mins.

My personal adjustment is that I add more cardamom to the dough. Double usually.

And I make 1.5 times the amount of the butter cinnamon filling because I like it that way.

Enjoy. They are probably 1000 cals each and you will eat till you're sick because you can't stop so only make them when you can give some away.

Also they only last a couple of days in a tin."

I found it better to use the kenwood chef to knead than by hand as if is quite a wet dough. And they are best eaten warm- a quick blast in the microwave freshens them up beautifully if they aren't straight out of the oven.

dingdongduckyfuzz · 10/12/2013 21:28

wow at you gorgeous ladies and your amazing losses! Turkey, how's the deviant rear end Xmas Grin? I'm so busy at the moment I just can't keep up properly, but trying to check in if only to keep me on track. So, NFD today, under TDEE so happy with that and will fast tomorrow. I think I've hit a bit of a plateau, which is fine as initial loss was quite quick. If I can stick to SWATH I'll be happy!

BsshBossh · 10/12/2013 21:39

DH's birthday today. Much wine, cake, chocs and pasta have been scoffed. So I think tomorrow I will do my first ever mini FD!

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 22:02

Okay, so I had my omelette and toast. It was lovely. So why am I now MORE hungry instead of less so?!

I feel like I've awakened the ravenous beast! :(

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 22:02

Earslaps the thought of cinnamon buns could easily make me weep at the minute!

sweetiepie1979 · 10/12/2013 22:06

Hi just checking in busy with kids since last week and haven't had a chance to read all the chat. Im worried I've fallen of the wagon a bit. Had successful fast day last Saturday followed by binge on Sat and Sun failed a fd yesterday we all have the cold here. Managed today with a bowl of my own veg soup and herbal teas but when I realised dh wasnt coming home to ten and toddler sick and tantrums 6 week old with wind I've a sore throat I ate a piece large piece Of chicken with breadcrumbs I looked it up 215 calls so I say I might have been just over 500 I'll eat as late as possible tomorrow to male up for it. Sorry that was a boring rant but I needed to check in with you guys So still feel part of the team .
My own veg soup
Is celery
Leeks
Carrots
Stockcube
That can't be more than 200 cals I'm a bowl could it?

Good luck and well done to everyone else

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 22:11

Sweetiepie I am new to all this but in your current situation I would have eaten my own body weight in lard, never mind a bit of breaded chicken. You did bloody well! Thanks

Southeastdweller · 10/12/2013 22:15

Thanks Dotty.

Very well done whimsical on reaching your target.

FD done and dusted. Struggled a bit - combination of weather and in a lethargic, feel-like-winding-down-cos-it's almost-Christmas kind of mood. Looking forward to some Green and Blacks lemon and mulled wine tomorrow and will probably eat out again too Smile.

Southeastdweller · 10/12/2013 22:18

Funny It was probably the toast that woke up the hunger monster. Lots of us don't bother with high carb food when fasting - maybe try an omelette with lots of veg next time?

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 22:20

Thanks Southeast. I'm actually feeling a bit rubbish and light-headed :( It's spoiling my triumph a bit!

Southeastdweller · 10/12/2013 22:25

I just read your earlier post funny. Well done on getting to 500 cals or under and if I were you I'd have a glass of water now and get to bed and dream about all those goodies you can have tomorrow!
