Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi everyone, it's the usual FD for me today (always get one in on a Monday). I find that instant soups do get me through the day at work when I'm fasting. I know they're not nutritious but they are somehow quite sustaining.
Looking at the posts on this thread over the past few days.... yes, life is pretty difficult isn't it? Just keep on finding strength where you can, that seems to work for me. This morning I found it helpful to think about lovely cuddles with my three year old then the ridiculous long slog to school then on to work didn't seem so bad.

MelanieCheeks · 25/11/2013 10:40

Checking in with the Monday fasters.

I found a lovely Christmas flavoured coffee at the weekend, which smells of ornage, cinnamon and brandy - yum!

BetsyBell · 25/11/2013 11:23

Quick check in - I haven't had time to catch up on posts yet…

Already failed my fast today - well, I think it was a foregone when the port came out, along with the cheese and crackers after the indulgent Sunday meal and plenty of wine.

A little fuzzy today - managed fine with no breakfast but I've just attacked a pack of nuts, dried fruit, satsumas and sampled the newly bought whole earth peanut butter…

Still NNNing on weekdays though so haven't broken any of my self-imposed rules (PB has no added sugar Grin). However, I'm adding a new one for this week - NO BREAD. I seriously binged on bread this weekend - first time in absolutely ages at least but not ideal!

Hope you all do better than me today Monday fasters. Tomorrow...

Hey betsey tomorrow is another day. Sometimes it's what your body needs IMHO

I am already passing through the damn-I-can't-eat-today phase and into the slurrp-I-can-eat-tomorrow-and-it-will-taste-so-good-phase.

PoshPaula · 25/11/2013 12:01

melanie would that be the Starbucks Christmas blend, by any chance? Comes in little sachets?

Talkinpeace · 25/11/2013 12:02

fasting today. Have earache so mainlining tea :-)

PoshPaula · 25/11/2013 12:17

betsy I can tell that you love the same sort of foods as I do - I have no willpower when it comes to dried fruit and Whole Earth PB. Cheese and good yoghurt with honey are also personal favourites.... And omg I love bread.

MelanieCheeks · 25/11/2013 12:36

No it's not a Starbucks one, it's in a jar, I think made by Littles. I've previously tried their roast hazelnut flavour, which smells very good also.

MrsFlorrick · 25/11/2013 12:54

So much for a liquid fast Grin

Does soup count?? Wink

I will add my story to the achievement thread. Need to get the computer fired up first. Usually MN on the phone.

Tired today. Both DC up during the night. And had some repair work done in house this am so I wish I could lay down for an hour (oh the first world problems I suffer eh!)

The weekend involved cheese. Quite a lot of cheese but I only went over on Friday but it was quite a lot. Wine was involved too.

FD here. Attempted liquid fast but I lasted till 15 mins ago. So hungry so I had soup.

whimsicalname · 25/11/2013 13:18

Morning all. I love how positive you all sound on your Monday fasts. I weighed in at 135lbs today after a 3 week plateau at 138. So I feel very positive too! And, astonishingly to me, 2lbs away from my 9.5 stone target. I don't think I've ever hit a target weight before.

Not2bObvious · 25/11/2013 13:28

Well done Whimsical - you must be thrilled!
137 is my end goal so I'm v envious.
Broke fast with slice of wheaten bread & a poached egg. Head back down to work and keeping busy until 6, supper, maybe an orange for pud and then kitchen CLOSED

MrsFlorrick · 25/11/2013 13:38

Well done Whimsical!!! Grin

smellylittleorange · 25/11/2013 14:03

smellylittleorange · 25/11/2013 14:03

Actually Grin not sad face as I am taking back the control !

ilovejumpers · 25/11/2013 14:15

Hello all. I dabbled in fasting over the summer, felt really good for it but it kind of tailed off. So, I have decided to start again and come on here for support! First fast will be tomorrow, planning on just tea and water until 11.30, will have some veg soup then, and a M&S fuller longer for dinner at 6 with veg. Brings me in just over 500, but I will swim for 30 mins in the morning, then my job involves a fair bit of exercise so should be fine. Really looking forward to getting going. I plan to shred 4 times a week and swim twice. Staring out at 9 stone 6 (5 foot 3) and would LOVE to get to 8 stone 10, so 10lbs please would be fab! Would love to get to 9 for Christmas, achievable do you think??

somewherebecomingrain · 25/11/2013 14:24

Oops FD fail. It all went wrong with an Atkins bar. These are not low carb because of the polyols. Then a slice of cheese, a cherry tomato and my daughter's left over mashed potato. Then some sips of double cream. Then a creamy coffee.

No idea the cals. Gonna call it 500.

Now going for a mini fast. 500 dinner max.

Hello newbies x

Breadandwine · 25/11/2013 14:25

Control - the most important word in this WOL! Welcome orange, you're in the right place!

"NO BREAD" Eeek!

"omg I love bread"

Phew! Grin

toffeesponge · 25/11/2013 14:54

*Whim" - no I haven't thought about taking a multi vitamin but will think about it as I probably could use a boost.

Thanks for the hugs 2bObvious and Cuckoo.

Somewhere - my youngest is 8 and I have a ten year old and a 12 year old as well but have had PND with all of them and depression before that too. ADs made me live in fog and I had counselling but it didn't help underlying issues.

FD today but I did just have 2 small pieces of left over roast chicken while I made wraps for the kids teas as we have an appointment and will be late home. I have jacket potato for tea so think a small bit of chicken won't derail that. Tomorrow I can not wait to have toasted tomato and herb bagel and cheese to try.

I have spent 4 hours cleaning and tidying DS1's room. Dirty socks, loads of MY stuff he had without my knowledge, dried out pens, his missing house keys, crisps, food wrappers. I am not happy with him.

Got to go again to get DD and DS2 from school so sat down for all of half an hour today Sad.

Twinmama32 · 25/11/2013 15:56

I'm a bit late to the party but I'm joining you on NNN and going up until 24th dec (NND 2/3!)

Marking my place and off to catch up on 35 pages of thread!!!

duckyfuzz · 25/11/2013 18:18

Good FD so far and as I'm sat in a car for the next hour and a half I should be ok. 2 egg omelette and some rocket is all I've had, going to try to stick at that as out for lunch tomorrow. Feeling v positive and upbeat today, most uncharacteristic!

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 25/11/2013 18:20

LOF going well so far

Only had fruit tea and water, but I am so cold have got a mug of hot water now

toffeesponge · 25/11/2013 18:35

What a day! Busy having spent 4 hours cleaning ds1's room and an hour on phone calls but this afternoon was ridiculous.

Car in front throws lit cigarette out of his car. 10 minutes later we spot a massive hay bale on fire surrounded by fire engines and police cars. On our way home we are waiting to turn on to the main road when a woman driving a range rover is speeding down towards a car that has stopped and there was no chance she was going to stop so I beeped my horn and she stopped with mm to spare. Cheeky cow then beeped me when I beeped her again. An elderly couple had a very close shave and I wanted her to think on.

I am home now. Headache, tired but dh has put dinner on so am looking forward to my jacket potato and FD achieved!!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 25/11/2013 18:46

Hello all!

SLO never let you hear you calling yourself rubbish again. Rubbish is neither beautiful nor useful - neither of which, I am certain, is true of you. You might need a bit of repurposing (don't we all from time to time?) but neither you, nor anyone else, is rubbish. End of rant Wink

Well done FDers - my turn tomorrow (because I forgot today Blush ). Good luck fellow tuesday fasters!

SV: the 4lbs gained during october (three-quarters of which consisted of PMS) now lost Grin

Completely satiated with my food today (nfd) but ate under 1300 - tdee is over 1700 - but I know I will need that back later in the week.

NotAsTired · 25/11/2013 19:29

Oops! School dinners carb fest today inc 2 sponge cakes with custard. Finished off the evening with more carb fest of way too much rice. I guess that's fast day out the window Grin.

On the plus side, no breakfast so did 16:8. I have some olives left from the weekend, I think I may dive into that later. At least it will be gone then.

I can only fit in one one fd this week, on Thursday.

Remind me that I have to make doctors appt about getting iron levels and thyroid function checked. I keep forgetting.

NotAsTired · 25/11/2013 19:30
