Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Toffee That's not acceptable, 4hrs having to clean a DC's messy room ! No wonder you are so tired if you have to wait on them all like this.

All your DCs are old enough to at least clean their own rooms. They should help with other chores too, like the washing up and the pets.

Maybe it's a generational difference, but my friends and I all did such chores from about 8 years old. We certainly had to clear up any mess we made.

BsshBossh · 25/11/2013 20:08

Welcome orange and jumpers.

FD broken with some grapes. Couldn't manage a LOF as I feel a bit weak today due to sore throat and feeling icy cold. I'm back in my very sexy not dressing gown, woolly hat and scarf combo!

Veg stir-fry planned for later but may chuck a chicken breast or egg into it.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/11/2013 20:10

Betsy Oh, don't traumatise poor b&w ! Why not try some lovely sprouted bread, so good for you.

b&w She didn't really mean it. I love bread and I eat loads (sprouted)
Grin

toffeesponge · 25/11/2013 20:10

My kids are all messy so and so's. They love it when I do their rooms but it doesn't last. I get cross and say I am not doing them any more but I always crack, especially with the youngest.

Talkinpeace · 25/11/2013 20:14

toffeesponge
have you ever done the binbag trick on a child's bedroom?

pin a "notice to clean on their bedroom door"
two days later pin a "final notice to clean"
two days later, go in with binbags and clear the room
everything except bedding and what is in its correct place on shelves and in cupboards.
Put the lot in bin bags (ideally in the back of the car)

be ready for the explosion when they get home from school.
return belongings one bag at a time and if a bag is not properly emptied, no more are forthcoming.
(ipods do not get on with dirty pants and coffee cup dregs)

trust me, you'll only ever have to do it once Grin

peplum41 · 25/11/2013 20:20

notastired have you gone back to feeling sotiredagain? Worth getting your blood checked then, if only to eliminate that line of enquiry.

Lofd going well so far, but looking forward to trip to garden centre cafe tomorrow. Have had half a can of suma tomato and basil soup at 80 cals and a sachet of 40 cal hot choc. Just done 3 night shifts so beddy byes calling. My motivation is giving digestive system a break after lasts weeks overload. Im thinking I want to have less protein on fds generally.

eatriskier · 25/11/2013 20:21

Hello newbies, congrats losers and nsvers

Today I have been reminded why I need to keep fasting. B12 jab due on wednesday and I'm in the last dregs so am fuzzy of head. This used to kick in around 6-7 weeks after a jab, and fasting gets me to 10 weeks. Not allowed a jab more than every 12 weeks as NICE say no one could possibly need in sooner Confused. Anyway today's fuzzy head left me very nearly forgetting to pick DD up from nursery. I knew she wasn't here, and I knew MIL hadn't picked her up but it didn't dawn on me until quite late that meant I needed to get her… So the more amount of time I can keep not being fuzzy the better Blush Blush Blush

peplum41 · 25/11/2013 20:21

Ha ha tip so evil.

toffeesponge · 25/11/2013 20:21

Last week I threatened everything would go that was left on the floor and got my bin bag ready. It worked with DS2 who I was doing it with. He does try but his room is tiny and he is eight. I am so don't what you have said with notices, etc etc next time! I did ds1's room today so I guess I will have to do dd and ds2's room to be fair. DD asked that I leave her books as they are when/if I did her room...

Before I fall in to my box of chocolates does anyone know the calories in 2 small jacket spuds, some butter, cheese and curry baked beans. MFP doesn't seem too.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/11/2013 20:25

The office heating was turned right down, then I had a sub-zero cycle home. So, I exercised my option of taking the full 500 cals for this FD, all at supper.
That is the flexibility with zero-cal FDs: I have the option of a substantial supper if I need it, but I still achieve the health benefits of 20+ hrs on zero cals.

Bssh I'm wearing a fleecy M&S dressing gown too, on top of my trous & 2 jumpers. What a sexy pair of onions (lots of layers) we are. I don't need my scarf & hat, though, because I don't have your cold . I hope you feel 100% again tomorrow.

TwinMama Welcome to NNN & NND.
I found on NNN that I am eating more fruit during the week, instead of choc, so that's healthier.

Talkinpeace · 25/11/2013 20:26

peplum
The friend who did it had 17 and 15 year old boys.
Pass the popcorn moment when they got home from school.
But it worked.
I've never had to. I just threaten and magically the rooms are such that I can clean them. I try not to look in the cupboards.

eatriskier
can you not top yourself up with tablets ?

BigChocFrenzy · 25/11/2013 20:28

Great idea, Tip. I love your evil techniques !

toffeesponge · 25/11/2013 20:30

so doing.... not don't.

Dosey · 25/11/2013 20:45

Hi there just checking in. I had a binge on chocolate brownies that were on the office today and for some bizarre reason I craved chocolate after tea tonight. So had another blow out. i have biked walked and shreded today so i am stiill in my tdee. I thought I had nipped that habit in the bud. Anyway planning my first liquid only fast tomorrow. Can this include hot chocolate from the drinks machine at work. They are only dinky little things but I thought I might have I one at lunchtime. Then an oxo cube for tea.

Hello and welcome to newbies

eatriskier · 25/11/2013 20:46

tip sadly not - I can't absorb it like a normal person. A sad irony as my bad diet is actually chock full of B12. I do use sublinguals, which seem to help a little but not enough. This time 9m ago I would be losing sensation in my limbs and palpitations from climbing a flight of stairs too. Fasting is the first thing I've found that actually seems to give me a major improvement.

NotAsTired · 25/11/2013 20:52

peplum. Yes, I definitely have gone back to feeling SoTiredAgain. Also, I'm worried about hair loss, which is a sign of iron deficiency, I think. I was hoping it was temporary but its relentless. My thyroid levels are very close to being on the wrong side of underactive and I have to get it checked every couple of years. I did use to take thyroxine when I was younger.

Not2bObvious · 25/11/2013 20:54

Happy day! 600 cal FD done & dusted. That is pretty good for me, 1 FD down, 1 to go. Great that you got rid of your gain Helles - you must be thrilled. Exhausted now, sick dd home all day although to be fair she was no trouble but dh came home feeling sick so instead of handing over a bit, I had to do the whole dinner/bedtime thing - honestly I'm such a lightweight Smile Hope my fellow Monday fasters are in good form and had a good FD

Not2bObvious · 25/11/2013 21:04

Toffee you didn't put amounts but I'll take a shot at counting it up:
2 small potatoes, c. 350gr before baking - 280 cals
Butter, 10 gr, -about 70 cals
Cheese full fat or reduced? For 30gr, either 120 or 90 cals
Beans - c. 100

570 or 540?

duckyfuzz · 25/11/2013 21:10

Calling it a day on 300 cals.
NSVs - haven't really felt hungry - a FD first! Also the trousers I almost returned a few weeks ago as too tight are now a really good fit, if not a little loose around the waist Grin

toffeesponge · 25/11/2013 21:17

Thank you Not2bObvious. Shame I then had 3 or 4 Lindt chocolates but surely, surely my running around all day means they don't count?!?!?!?

BigChocFrenzy · 25/11/2013 21:22

Hey, I have to address one threadmate as Rubbish, another as Smelly !
Maybe we could dream up some really positive new names to rebrand the new slimmer you.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/11/2013 21:32

Eat, NotAs
You are both obviously struggling womanfully with deficiencies.
Do take care of yourselves in this bitter weather.
Flowers
Ducky Well done on your NSV with the trousers !
Flowers
Important Rule for this WOL:
Never throw away clothes that are too tight - that is only a temporary state !
Grin

peplum41 · 25/11/2013 21:48

toffee leave it at that and you can call it a successful FD. Loads done, dealt with stress, teeny nibble of well deserved choc ok. Now get yourself a good glug of water and brush your teeth, pjs on. Wake up tomorrow feeling brilliant.

Double yay ducky. Those pants will be hanging off you before you know it. Some fds leave you hungry, some are weirdly easy, I think it depends on tom and what you ate the day before, how tired you feel.

bsshbossh I've been attempting to rid my stomach of that bug that causes ulcers via the holistic route. One suggested treatment is cayenne pepper in hot water, ideally on empty stomach. I find it very warming, and quite tasty if you feel like a savoury hit. Jury out on whether it works on the ulcer bugs, but gives you a good internal glow. Like you're in a readybrek ad.

duckyfuzz · 25/11/2013 21:59

I think today I've just been too busy to eat or think about food and out of the house for most of the day so no cupboards to raid! TOM really gets me as does feeling in anyway poorly or hungover.

Toffee I think you've done brilliantly to get a FD in with all that to cope with! I have a monthly rant at mine about rooms they comply for a bit, I ranted a bit less, they let it go, I rant again and so it goes on...

Positive nicknames should be the rule BCF I agree, no more rubbish or smelly!

toffeesponge · 25/11/2013 21:59

I hope I do wake up feeling brilliant peplum41 as I woke up this morning fuming with DH who had dream cheated on me and done something with her he won't with me and was all "and??" about it. I was not happy. And I wanted to buy shoes!
