Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Toffee You sound rundown and overworked (((big hugs)))
It is no wonder FDs are hard in your situation.

If you fancy a siesta while the DCs are in school, go for it.

You need a proper holiday, ideally without chores or childcare, but difficult to manage that. A couple of Mums at my gym go on holiday together each year (without DPs) and share the childcare. They say that is a good break.

toffeesponge · 24/11/2013 21:14

duckyfuzz - to my shame I only really have one friend locally and we meet up occasionally for a wander around the shop but don't get to chat properly. Another friend lives a bit away and we do get to chat loads but she has lots on her own plate so try not to make it all about me. Some days I feel so lonely and other days I want to hide. I just find it all so full on sometimes and I hardly stop all day yet nothing ever gets properly done.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/11/2013 21:15

Ducky A half stone is really good in that short time, well done.

toffeesponge · 24/11/2013 21:16

Last year DH booked me a night in a hotel alone. I got there, didn't find the receptionist welcome (he had paid extra for me to check in one hour early) and I got into bed to sleep and just cried Blush. Dh came and he stayed and I went home with the kids.Hmm.

Southeastdweller · 24/11/2013 21:18

Yes here in London toffee.

toffeesponge · 24/11/2013 21:19

Well done ducky!!

I can only dream of ten something but then I never thought I would see 11 on the scales so you have inspired me to try harder this week Flowers.

toffeesponge · 24/11/2013 21:20

Oh, I remember London. I used to live there pre kids [a life time ago].

duckyfuzz · 24/11/2013 21:22

Oh toffee you sound so low. I don't have local friends, we'd moved here a week before my twins were born and by the time I came out of the fog I didn't really have the energy or inclination to make the effort. I don't mind too much, my girls are lovely and dh is great but a coffee with the girls would be nice every now and then.

BCF thanks Grin I'd love to make it a full stone by Christmas, if not then maybe end of jan...

duckyfuzz · 24/11/2013 21:25

Toffee I was over 13 a few years ago, got down to 11st7 just by cutting out snacks and booze and was happy with that, but it has tended to creep up towards 12 when I don't focus and I need to take control back. I know I can do it...!

toffeesponge · 24/11/2013 21:30

Yes you can and I will do it with you!

June 2005 - 14 stone but was 9 months pregnant.
August 2005 - 11 stone something.
July 2012 - 13 stone 2lbs. No idea I had put on 2 stone Blush.
August 2013 - 12 stone 4lbs.
This week - 11 stone 6lbs but I have TOTM and my lowest this 5:2 time is 11 stone 4lbs.

duckyfuzz · 24/11/2013 21:51

Deal toffee! Race you to 10st7?!

whimsicalname · 25/11/2013 00:14

Thanks postmanpatscat - I'm a long way from posh spice yet (and don't intend to get anywhere near either!) and BCF, peplum, Somewhere and (I think you meant me) southeast and duckyfuzz.

Toffee, are you taking any multi vit? I'm not a great believer in them, particularly as I feel I have a reasonable, healthy and balanced diet, but I do sometimes take one if I feel particularly run down, which to be honest I often do at this time of year. I have also taken to having an orange flavour fizzy drink one in a pint of water on a fd, which almost feels like having a glass of orange juice for breakfast and making sure I start the day with a good drink. Also I don't know how I managed a job and 3 kids before we moved over here. I barely have time just for the kids now!

peplum41 · 25/11/2013 01:02

Morning

Just having last supper before starting 36 hour fast. Aiming to do a liquid which is a first as usually I couldn't face such deprivation, but I'm mildly excited. At least if you fail a liquid you can feel decadent with your 500 cals. I'm not doing a zero, going to have a smooth soup at 7 pm.

postmanpc you wizzer. Did you exercise much before this wol?

eats I'm really surprised you don't like veg, esp with you losing so well. I love all things veg even Brussels sprouts. I steam rather than boil.

peplum41 · 25/11/2013 01:06

Just watching a rerun of supersize superskinny.

And breathing a sigh of relief, not just that I discovered fasting, but also that I stumbled across these threads.

The skinny one drinks loads of tea.

somewherebecomingrain · 25/11/2013 07:32

Morning all. FD today. No zero noodles - not nutritious enough. Veg and lean protein all the way.

somewherebecomingrain · 25/11/2013 07:34

Morning all. FD today. No zero noodles - not nutritious enough. Veg and lean protein all the way.

Whimsical like the multivitamin idea

eatriskier · 25/11/2013 07:54

peplum I know, people assume I just eat veg on fast days but I tend to have a meat and carb element. There is always veg in my meals now, it's just a very limited selection. Highly doubt I get near 5 a day - though when I used to try my tummy was not in a good place...

eatriskier · 25/11/2013 07:55

whim must get back on track with multivitamins. Think I need to make sure my calcium, vit d and iron are at decent levels so shouldn't be so slack

postmanpatscat · 25/11/2013 07:57

Morning everyone!

No FD for me today...the second of the pain au chocolat I bought yesterday awaits me for breakfast Smile

peplum I've been running sporadically for about ten years, with bouts of serious training e.g. when my pal was training for a marathon I got up to 13 miles slowly. However, I've just read on the maintenance thread that the speedy anglaise has run a 10k ten whole minutes faster than me!!

Not2bObvious · 25/11/2013 08:12

Hi all, FD for me too. Scales was 11.9 yesterday, now 11.8.2, be interesting to see where I am tomorrow. I realised yesterday that my last few fd's were rubbish because I sat with others at lunch and didn't leave straight after, which means I pick at things - sometimes you run the risk of encountering left over meeting sandwichesConfused
Have to work from home today due to sickly child so that'll help on the temptation.
Toffee sad to hear of your feeling lonely, I remember my first maternity leave, I walked the roads for hours every day with the pram, felt the walls closing in on me at home. I craved company, the girls at my local shop were prob sick of the sight of me! Staying at home has as many challenges if not more than working outside the home. Loneliness is a hard thing, hope you find a way to feel better, wish I'd something practical to say but for the moment sending you a ((((hug))))

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 25/11/2013 08:15

peplum

I did a liquid only fast last week and found it easier than 500cals

Instead of fussing about eating a little I resigned to eating nothing, so no fuss!

Lots of different fruit and green tea throughout the day helped me, and I'm doing it again today.

rubbishfamily333 · 25/11/2013 09:18

Fast day today in my freezing cold office Hmm we don't have central heating but my manager had asked me to find new heaters for the office any recommendations to heat up a freezing cold office? I'm dreading today Hmm being so cold in there is putting me off working Hmm

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 25/11/2013 09:21

Morning All

Haven't had chance to catch up since thurs! Shock

Finally managed to late last night. Can't remember all details but well done - some lovely NSV! I agree that they are best kind. Well done to all losses, successful fd's, and Good luck to all fd today!

Mrs F I agree that you should get your story on the Insp thread. Think the comparisons of different methods, combined with overall total lost will be invaluable. Not to mention how your own personal experiences may strike a chord with people out there feeling a little hopeless/miffed at public perception with GD etcetera.

Toffee some days you post and I think - is this me in a parallel universe?! I wish I could give you a big hug too. If you ever want to chat to someone sharing lots of things in common then pm me.
Although, maybe we'd send each other heading straight to AD after all Shock Grin
Can only reiterate what has already been said. Please stay in touch on here and we'll do our best across the airwaves X

To everyone else out there having shitty times, lurkers or otherwise. Hang in there ((xx))
There is always someone out there who cares. On this thread, that is lots of someones! You just may not have been introduced yet! But get involved on here whenever poss, and know that you are not alone!

Happy Crappy Monday Everybody!!

Attempting liquid fast today. I'm with the soupers though, not quite ready to commit to no solids yet!

somewherebecomingrain · 25/11/2013 10:01

Im wary of packaged soups. I think fd food is all about nutrition. Having said that gonna get a berocca and see if I can eat less.

LOFs are better than eating crap loke zero noodles on a fast day. I've done a couple totally unexpectedly just coasted through on milky coffee. Not sure that quite counts but it does feel different from 500 cals of solid food, a more powerful cleanse.

toffee have you got a baby?

Ps bssh I'm belatedly observing that we might have to wait a whole for your next pic (impatient)

BsshBossh · 25/11/2013 10:30

somewhere the lbs are coming off at a snail's pace now so yes an updated photo will be a while.

First FD ever with a sore throat and cough. Feel fine on liquids so far, but we'll see. Am planning simple spinach, courgette, red pepper and chicken stir fry tonight if I can't make today a full LOF.

DH away all week so it will be so lonely nice to eat very simply and cleanly each night.
