Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning everyone! weigh in day and finally the plateau has shifted. There is hope!

I also have noticed fast day calories dropping a little. 4 months in and can happily reach under 500 on FD. Early days it was 650 ish.

officially move to bmi 25 (not overweight yay!)

Good day all you 5:2 ers

Breadandwine · 24/10/2013 10:19

Thank you, everyone, for your good wishes! Thanks

We're not supposed to be buying for each other, but I got six - count 'em - 6 bars of Lindt's Chilli chocolate!

Luckily, egged on encouraged by my daughter, yesterday I bought my wife/us a rather nice serving dish.

Just for you, Bssh, my top tip for a long and happy marriage:

If one of you is a middle of the toothpaste tube squeezer, and the other a bottom toothpaste tube squeezer, the solution is simple - his and her her and his toothpaste tubes!

Works for us! Smile

NO SNACKING
have the dinner and the snack as two courses of dinner
you do not need to snack
honest

breadandwine
we have his and hers bathrooms - even easier (nearly 30 years together)

BigChocFrenzy · 24/10/2013 10:36

I'm FDing. I think Bssh & somewhere are too, anyone else ?

Amazingly, yesterday was only 1860 cals including choc, way under TDEE (unless I forgot something !)
And I did boxing too. Virtue shines from all my bodily orifices Wink
Hope such virtue lasts through this FD.

mehefin Great to know there*ll be another masochist on Saturday !

spamfrit Well done, welcome to a healthy weight !

BigChocFrenzy · 24/10/2013 10:38

Betsy On Martin Berkhan's LeanGains site, he says up to 50 cals total daily does not break a fast - no effect on blood sugar, e.g. for those who need milk in coffee.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 24/10/2013 10:47

Morning everyone :)

FD here today, made much easier by the fact that the sun is shining!

Not a 500 fast though, due to babysitting arrangements my parents are here later so we'll be having a 'normal' dinner and probably a bottle of wine between the 4 of us.
I reckon I should come in around 800-900, which will still be a great calorie deficit for the day and will mean I can enjoy my long weekend away with a clear conscience. The food at the hotel we are going to is amazing and they have a great wine list so all restraint will be out the window Grin

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 24/10/2013 11:22

Congratulations to Breadandwine. We 'know' each other from a previous forum and always remember you were the first stranger to congratulate me and DH when we got married. That's almost 7 years ago :-O

Anyhow, FD here today and so far am on zero calories.

Had lots of water and might have some berries and honey in a while.

Am baking DGS's first birthday cake now, the temptation to lick must be resisted!

cuckoo13 · 24/10/2013 11:29

Hi Everybody! Hope you all well and fd/Nfd going to plan.

BreadandWine massive congratulations to you and MrsBW Thanks Wine Cake

Hi Laska am making your curry from recipe thread today!

Loved Whimsical reverse Spartacus lol! Grin am considering name change hope you recognise me...Wink

cuckoo13 · 24/10/2013 11:39

Also BreadandWine.... B&J or BJ (to save characters Wink ) is ice-cream. Ben and Jerry's - manufacturers. Is very yum, lots flavours, highly calorific and expensive. As such, I make it rule to only buy when on offer at half price - this also helps stop becoming size of house. But I have practically given up drinking so can 'afford' to eat pig out

not sure if you didn't know or we're playing?? Can't tell as brain not functioning without wifi. Grrrrrr Angry bloody SKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cuckoo13 · 24/10/2013 11:41

were

BsshBossh · 24/10/2013 11:46

FD going well here. Just one coffee and lots of water so far. It's nearly "lunch time" so once the Ocado guy has delivered and I've packed everything away I'm off for a walk in London's glorious sunshine.

Hope everyone else is doing fine?

AtchooUhOh · 24/10/2013 11:59

(looks left and right) 'ello 'ello 'ello

Fd ok here Bssh coff and water only too.

Am freezing and hitting pmt time. Having emotional morning so nice to get on here for cheer up. Enjoy your walk - beautiful in autumn on days like today isn't it. If could get out would join you, but also waiting for delivery.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/10/2013 12:08

cuckoo Sounds like a tough time. Don't get your arm / beam stuck up the chimney.

And stop talking about BJ. You have forced me to add it to my shopping list for Saturday, which is an FD (I mean the banana chunks BJ, not the .... oh never mind)

Just had a delicious small salmon fillet with a massive amount of peas, carrots, mixed peppers plus lemon and small tomato. Total 320 cals, so I can have a (not a snack) protein shake tonight if I am very hungry post-training - sometimes I get carried away on fasted training and go over my 1 hr FD limit.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/10/2013 12:08

cuckoo arm / beak. This espresso is too strong

BigChocFrenzy · 24/10/2013 12:11

Meal distribution Maybe different for those < 50 yrs ?

To burn a good amount overnight, I need several hours empty before bed FD or NFD..

If I do a 43 week, then instead of my 52 sub-100 FD, I take the full 500 cals at lunchtime.
This digests in time to provide energy for evening training, after which I don't get hungry before bed.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/10/2013 12:12

Even on 43, don't normally need the full 500

Dotty342kids · 24/10/2013 12:55

Hello fellow Thursday fasters! Smile

For the first time ever, on a fast day, I had some breakfast! The kids had some brioche loaf and jam and there was just the end piece left so I had it, and it was lovely!
Fortunately dinner later on will be a home made chicken/turkey/veg stew so I know that's pretty low in cals and I won't have any of the mash that everyone else will have with it.

itsaboat your lunchtime date with DH sounds lovely, hope it was scrumptious Grin

BsshBossh how on earth do you find something filling, for a FD dinner, under 150 cals? Do share your secrets!

eatriskier · 24/10/2013 13:09

Congrats Mr and Mrs B&W Flowers

FD here, got my exercise on this am. Off out this afternoon to buy saucepans. Y'all can't cope with how rocknroll I am Halloween Grin

PoshPaula · 24/10/2013 13:15

Thursday FD here in sunny Sussex. One tea, one coffee, two cuppa soups so far (I do have an early start and am at work now).

I'm not even thinking about sandwiches. NO!

Itsaboatjack · 24/10/2013 13:39

Oh dear. Big wifey fail on my part. Even after saying Happy Anniversay to B&W today I still totally forgot it is also my wedding anniversary Shock.

invinoveritas51 · 24/10/2013 13:46

Unplanned FD here in sunny Scotland (yes! sunny Scotland!!). Had a small bowl of porridge for breakfast with DH2B and he then reminded me that he was out for a big charity lunch so would only need a light supper. In view of the fact that yesterday's fast went ever so slightly off track in the evening I have seized the opportunity to have a proper one today. Have had mug of bouillon and an apple for lunch and will have poached egg on toast for supper. Should all come in c 500 cals which will be perfecto!

Have joined the hoopa's too! Can do anti-clockwise ad infinitum but clockwise is a tad more problematic - can't figure out why it should be so but will emerge triumphant eventually!

Happy fasting everyone - and enjoy your fodder all you NFDers.
