Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks Betsy Thanks. I have found MFP very useful, especially in the beginning when I was still learning what normal, healthy portion sizes are. But tonight I found it most useless: had three good meals (NFD), finished eating dinner (a healthy, yummy tuna wild rice salad packed with veggies) around 9pm and was nicely full; then looked at my total calories for the day, saw it was several hundred calories below TDEE so served myself some ice cream - just to bump the numbers up! It's not the first time I've done that and for me it's the reason I give up on MFP for months on end.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 22/10/2013 22:44

Thanks for the new thread Betsy :)

I don't log on MFP either, I can't be doing with worry about it. I did do it for a while about 18 months ago but it just because one more job and I was obsessing more about what I was eating, which isn't a good thing IMO.

FD today, successfully completed.

Not2bObvious · 22/10/2013 22:51

Thanks Betsy Marking my spot in a slightly tipsy, very well fed state, away with work, so proper good nfd - good behaviour gone by the wayside!
MissS you're doing great, don't sweat the small stuff, on nfd's - hungry eat, not hungry, don't eat. On fd's do your 500. You start gaining, then consider mfp as a resource. It's only a helpful tool if it helps you(sorry wine has given me bad case of stating the obvs!) And 12 pounds is excellent, and Tips right, you are only a little overweight by bmi. Surely you're seeing your effort paying off? Enjoy that, it's worth acknowledging.

Not2bObvious · 22/10/2013 22:56

I'm the eater previously known as JB30 Grin So I'm not BennetGirl
The mystery continues....

whimsicalname · 23/10/2013 01:33

I'm not bennetGirl either. It's a bit like reverse Spartacus, isn't it!

Gosh, the last thread entirely ran away with itself, didn't it. Thanks for the new one Betsy.

I'm really pleased with myself for a couple of good days, despite a lot of temptation. I had a brunch yesterday, and whilst I enjoyed a goodly selection of breakfast baked goods, I hadn't had breakfast before, and then just had an apple mid afternoon by way of lunch. Then went out for dinner with a friend visiting from the UK, and indulged, but not overly so. Clearly a Magherita (the booze sort, not the pizza) is a cleansing tonic what with all that lime.

I was in two minds about today, as felt coldy and anticipated a slight hangover, but have managed on miso soup, black bean soup and, er, a chocolate cookie. But it was home made, is vegan, and was the smallest on the cooling tray. I also swam kilometre as feeling too bleurgh for the usual body pump.

No more fasting this week as my folks are arriving imminently and I can't be bothered with the interrogation and also fancy a break. I've lost 7lbs over 5 weeks so far, so don't think a 6 day stint without a fd will be the end of the world.

Good luck to everyone else.

wrigglebum · 23/10/2013 06:21

Hi all and thanks for the new thread Betsy Flowers

Yesterday was the second night in a row at the pub on the ciders so not sure if my FD will go ok, but no worries if not. Was also planning to exercise first thing but I think I'll leave it until I've come round a bit.

That's a great loss whimsical, and having a little break won't hurt at all as long as you get back on it. That's why I love this WOE- it's so flexible. I never bother to fast if I've got visitors or if I'm going anywhere. I just try to eat mindfully and then fast at the next opportunity. I certainly haven't had any problems losing weight so it's working for me.

thinkcan · 23/10/2013 06:40

Attempting my 2nd one meal FD today. It's 12.40pm my time now. Only have to hold out for another 7 hours or so. I CAN DO IT!

lucyintheskywithdinos · 23/10/2013 07:36

thinkcan you will be fine. Go do something that takes your mind off it!

FD and lots of work to do today. Waiting in for deliveries too and watching one of my housemates children while they do the fruit and veg wholesaler run. So today I shall be doing so many things simultaneously that I would have no time to eat even if I was planning to.

I'll just gush for a moment...most woe would be difficult for me, with communal meals every evening, cooked by four different people, but 5:2 is so flexible that it works fine. On FDs I just skip the carb bit of dinner and have a small portion of the rest.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 23/10/2013 08:00

It's me, Ripping/Gripping

I've been reading the Doctors thread, and it reminded me of the horrors of having to read Austen for O levels.

Good literature was wasted on me back then

Dotty342kids · 23/10/2013 08:28

Laska you're back! Woohooo waves
Anyway, just marking place. Managed successful fast yesterday followed by zumba toning so felt very virtuous. Normal day today so had banana and yog and piece of brioche and jam for breakfast. Dee Lish Ous! Smile

Food all planned out for rest of the day and then FD again tomorrow.

BetsyBell · 23/10/2013 09:14

Managed to fit in a workout before walking kids to school - not a shower though so a bit bleugh! Did an upper body weights workout plus press ups and chair dips.

NFD today but I find starting a day with exercise helps keep me on the straight and narrow, mostly.

Itsaboatjack · 23/10/2013 09:46

Well BB, that's pretty impressive getting it done that early.

Well done on getting your FD done Dotty. Did you ever get you hula hoop btw? I'm still going with mine and can do it in both directions now. I'll have to do out the tape measure later and see how much difference it's made. Anyone else hula-ing?

I have to run out to the hairdressers now as when I had my hair cut at the weekend he managed to cock it up and so I now have a decidedly wonky fringe!

BetsyBell · 23/10/2013 10:02

Tell me about hula hoops Itsa - I know I can't do a thing with the kids type hoops...

Preciousdaisybear · 23/10/2013 10:29

Morning all. Good news today that will result in bubbly tonight! NFD luckily.
cuckoo - so food from a van is like food eaten standing up or from someone else's plate Grin Gotta love those free calories...
Have a good day everyone fasting today.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 23/10/2013 10:31

Morning all :)

1 pound down this week, yay! 13 stone bang on.

NFD today. Peanut butter on toast for breakfast, not sure what is happening the rest of the day - need to make a bit of a plan now.

eatriskier · 23/10/2013 10:35

Good morning all!

itsa I'm about to get my hoop on, just as soon as I'm sure DS has definitely gone down for his nap. I can go for ages (though usually I'm a bit time constricted and stick to 10 mins) anticlockwise and am improving clockwise (can do 1-2mins before losing momentum).

DS is full of cold bless him. DD has gone for the day with MIL. DH is out tonight. So I get to do bath and bed all by myself (hence early hula ing). However I have a threesome planned with a certain Mr Ben and Mr Jerry tonight Halloween Wink.

cuckoo I rarely have 1400 calories to spare Sad. 100g at 320 calories requires careful planning. I do make a point of eating it with a teaspoon though so it lasts a lot longer.

eatriskier · 23/10/2013 11:01

Yay - managed 5 mins clockwise!!!!!

Meant to mention I have done something brave. I've just ordered a bikini for the kids swimming lessons. High waisted bottoms of course, but not so long ago I wouldn't have even bothered with those.

Dotty342kids · 23/10/2013 11:06

ooh eatriskier you go for it! I brought a bikini at the start of the summer and although there's plenty of wobble and squodge I felt confident and so I wore it with pride. Hope you do too Smile.
Well done on the clockwise hooping! I can only go in one direction currently and sometimes it works and I can do a couple of mins before it falls off and other times it's down by my feet every few seconds.

itsaboatjack so yes, have got my hoop and do enjoy it. It's a weighted, padded one but the bruising from the first couple of times was quite epic! I can't hula hoop at all with the kids' lightweight ones, for some reason the weighting really helps.

NotAsTired · 23/10/2013 12:31

Thanks, Betsy.

somewherebecomingrain · 23/10/2013 12:44

Hello marking my place!

On the mfp debate I was v v reluctant but it got me off my plateau.

Maybe that would have happened anyway.

I would not want to spend my life on mfp but its a useful tool ESP when you aren't losing and can't work out why.

I hope I'll be able to count cals in my head a bit better as a result of using it.

It also helps you to stop and think about what you are eating which is an excellent thing.

It helps you see the bigger picture - the week, calorie composition etc.

Talkinpeace · 23/10/2013 12:47

Another person who agrees that MFP is a really useful crutch to help you understand what portion sizes should be while your body is learning.

But used properly it should be like crutches - helping to strengthen you so that it becomes irrelevant after a while.
On the other hand in a bad week, its useful to have to hand as an extra bit of support.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/10/2013 13:00

Lunchtime Wave to all. Low cal wave to any FDers.

NFD for me today, with 90 mins boxing & Tabata. Several hunky muscular young men to meet again – and punch (on the gloves). Grin Grin

Alibaba Well done, an important psychological milestone for you

cuckoo, precious My understanding is that any calories eaten in a vehicle don't count, because you subtract the very high energy used by the car Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 23/10/2013 13:03

Only works for a moving vehicle, of course. So if the car stops at traffic lights important you pause eating until car moves off again.

wildwater · 23/10/2013 13:36

Thanks to all for being here. All good in Patagonia. Later X

southeastdweller · 23/10/2013 14:16

Well done Alibaba, isn't it fab knowing you can eat Green and Blacks chocolate and still lose weight on 5:2 Grin

I've been daydreaming about peanut butter ice cream the last few days so will get some tonight. Great tip from eat about eating it from a teaspoon. I've just started drinking wine at home in small glasses and it's lasting slightly longer this way.
