Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

southeast indeed it is Grin In fact I am going to add some to my shopping list for a little NFD treat later on :)

On the ice cream front, I don't know whether it is widely available but we love Jude's ice cream, it is made locally to us. Their salted caramel is just to die for.

I have got my act together with food for today. Lunch was quiche with a mini bread roll and butter, and a pear. Stuffed.
Dinner is going to be beef casserole (found some in the freezer) mash and savoy cabbage. Yum yum.

BsshBossh · 23/10/2013 15:04

Hello all. Well, I stopped logging on MFP today after a few weeks logging religiously and it's a relief to be eating according to hunger/fullness rather than by numbers iyswim.

I always drink wine from a small cup and eat ice cream in a small bowl with a teaspoon. It really works!

BsshBossh · 23/10/2013 15:05

Alibabaandthe40nappies your dinner sounds yummy - real Autumnal comfort food.

MelanieCheeks · 23/10/2013 16:16

Hiya gang! And thanks for the new thread.

I still use MFP for fast days. But on NFDs, well, sometimes I do, sometimes I dont. If I'm eating something home made, I'll either find something similar in the database, or pick out the major calorific elements (any oil, any carbs, and the meat) and ignore any veg/ salad. And I never record exercise calories.

mummyof2girlsx · 23/10/2013 17:03

my usual Wednesday fast day has not happened today. Kids on half term and I'm off work and had some family round last night and had a few Wine so today I am HUNGRY! Going to order a curry later Grin

Not sure whether to fast tomorrow or Friday.....or both to make up for an indulgent 2 days Hmm

Anyone else struggle to fast when usual routine changes?

MrsFlorrick · 23/10/2013 17:38

Thanks to eatriskier and others who recommended a bigger hoola hoop. It arrived today. It's a 110cm diameter one and it just only just reached my belly button. However it works really well. I can keep it up for aaaaages. Grin. I went for 10mins as soon as a used it without even trying.

Only thing is its got these stupid knobbly bits on (acu massage points or something). And they are a little ouch. Other than its brilliant.

I am having a low carb mini fast day. PILs left today so I am going to spend the next week making up for a week of over eating.

BsshBossh · 23/10/2013 17:42

mummy though I'm always extolling flexible virtues of 5:2 to others, I'm a stickler for routine and if I can't do a Monday or Thursday fast I really struggle.

alfiemama · 23/10/2013 17:46

Waves to everyone. Thanks for the thread Betsy.
Wow that hula hoops sound fun.
Well I'm still sticking to it. Today is a nfd but I've got no appetite though the White Russians sound good grin

clara1986 · 23/10/2013 17:50

Hi iv been doing 5:2 for about 3 months now. Its been good iv lost about 8lb BUT i have a few questions!!
I go to the gym every day, even on fast days. I usually do a spin class and a body conditioning class which would burn about 600 kcal. On fast days, if i have already burned 600 cals, can i eat up to 1100 cals making it a total of 500, OR do i have to keep it at 500 cals no matter what?
Next question. I seem to have hit a brick wall... but getting hungrier on fast days. I havent lost for about 3 weeks any tips to restart this weight loss. Iv only got about 4lb to go!!
Thanks xx

lucyintheskywithdinos · 23/10/2013 18:36

Bloody awful day. DD3 (22mths) fell and bit through her lip...all the way. Spent most of the day in hospital, and she has to go back for plastic surgery in the morning. Caving to comfort food this evening and feel fine about it too.

Bit shaky still!

wrigglebum · 23/10/2013 18:46

Clara- stick to 500 cals on a FD regardless of exercise. You can eat back exercise calories if you wish on other days.

In terms of the stall- have you recalculated your TDEE with your new weight? Try recalculating it at the weight you want to be- either calculate at sedentary and add back the extra calories you burn on your workouts or set at active but don't have the extra calories. Or sedentary, eat to TDEE in the week and have some weekend blow outs Smile. Hope that makes sense.

wrigglebum · 23/10/2013 18:47

Lucy Flowers, hope you and dd feel a bit better soon.

wrigglebum · 23/10/2013 18:49

Oh and Clara- to combat hunger on FDs remember high protein, low carb and plenty of calorie free fluids.

eatriskier · 23/10/2013 18:52

Oh no lucy that sounds awful. Poor DD. and there was me moaning all day about whiny kids.

About to get the kids into their PJs then bed. Then I have an itsu soup, prawn crackers and b&js to look forward to. Contemplated drinking tonight but thought I'd rather have the b&js.

NotAsTired · 23/10/2013 19:02

Is it just me who reads b&j as bj? Hmm Grin

Dotty342kids · 23/10/2013 19:07

I am so stuffed. Had breakfast and lunch (and few triangles of Toblerone courtesy of DH!) and then made spag bol for dinner. When, oh when, will I learn that lots of pasta is far, far too filling these days? Grin.
Feel stuffed to bursting but had to finish the bowl of course...

Thank goodness tomorrow is a fast day so can let my poor body recover from the carb fest I've just inflicted on it Smile

Dotty342kids · 23/10/2013 19:08

Yes NotAsTired, you are clearly far filthier than the rest of us Wink

Talkinpeace · 23/10/2013 19:40

Nice to have Laska and Wildwater popping back into these big threads - they are a great motivator to remember why 5:2 works.

Laska42 · 23/10/2013 19:47

Hi Bssh and Dotty I never went away , but have mainly posted on the maintainers board since the spring .

How are you doing? I was maintaining fine at 10st (22lbs lost) until I gave myself the summer off in June between then and September I put half a stone back on . I seemed to lack summer will power , but really that was nuts because I was just unwilling to give up cold white wine and BBq for a couple of days a week, but hey there it was. it was a lovely summer , but I need to get back on track

I've lost a bit of that weight again now,and am still in 10s mostly sometimes 12 on top , but now i've got my winter clothes out again (which are so much more unforgiving and fitted) , i've realised that if I want to remain a 10 (and get back to 10st or hopefully lower) I have to stop kidding myself that I am doing it regularly enough and get properly back into the fasting zone.. So I thought Id go back to what worked ..4:3, MFP, and regularly posting.. so here I am!!

Hi to all others who remember me . I know that IthinkICan is here(Iknowican now I believe), and some of the others posting on maintainers - B&W and Tip . Is Greeneggs still around? I hope all of you are doing well on your fasting journey

Laska42 · 23/10/2013 19:48

Evening Tip! crossposted!

eatriskier · 23/10/2013 19:49

Hahahahha notas - I was making sure I used the & everytime in case I accidentally typed bjs

Laska42 · 23/10/2013 19:52

And HI Betsy I left you out sorry , but of course I remember you thanks for the thread. How are you doing?

BsshBossh · 23/10/2013 20:05

lucy oh your poor DD! And you must have been all over the place. Big (((hug))) and Thanks for you both.

Hi Laska! As an ex-maintainer Wink I still lurk on the maintainers thread. 9 lbs to go and I'll be joining you all again (unless I decide that I want to go below BMI 21 that is!).

BetsyBell · 23/10/2013 20:14

Hi Laska, I've been maintaining at a few pounds above my pre-holiday weight but have decided to do a push at either removing the pounds or toning them up! It's quite a struggle against my natural instinct to start wanting to hibernate at this time of year but I love the fasting days and couldn't do without them now.

Are you still a 2 meal-a-day faster? I am but my first meal (at noon due to work schedule) has become so tiny I'm wondering if it even counts! A little bit of lettuce, some shredded ham and the odd bit of veg - less than 50 calories most days.

I lurk on the maintainers thread sometime - good to see your son got a job, I hope it's going well :)

Evening all! Can barely keep up with you these days. Hello to new joiners and 'old' timers. I should really be on the maintainers thread but I like it here too much :)

clara I do plenty of exercise too but hardly ever eat back exercise cals.
