Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Happy Anniversary to both B&W and itsa - enjoy the celebrations!

Dotty342kids · 24/10/2013 13:58

Oh itsaboat - naughty! Still, at least you've gone out for lunch together...

invino I can only hoop clockwise, I seem to be the odd one out here Grin

somewherebecomingrain · 24/10/2013 14:24

Congrats to the breadandwines how lovely!

tip yes mfp is stabilisers on the bike.

eateiskier not sure what your bad news was - this thread moves so fast. Hope you are ok.

AFM feeling cross about fasting today so going to take advantage of the woe's flexibility and prob go up to 750. So far on 222 - milky coffee and blueberrys.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/10/2013 16:04

Itsa Write a reminder now in your EMail calendar for 2014 !

eatriskier · 24/10/2013 16:35

itsa oopsie.... Happy anniversary to you and Mr itsa too.

somewhere Nothing major here just tantrumming kids and all the associated stress.

For some reason I seem to have hit upon Thursday as a creative day foodwise. This is not good. Not good at all. I have just attempted lower calorie mince pies and now they're sitting there begging to be tasted. Lower calorie means 117 a pop btw but better than Mr Kipling's 259.

wrigglebum · 24/10/2013 16:47

Dotty- are you a leftie? Right handlers generally prefer anti clockwise but left handlers tend to go clockwise.

BetsyBell · 24/10/2013 18:09

I reckon I'm 500 calories on the nose today, despite having 400cals worth of creamy fish pie mmmmmmmmm

It was supposed to be tomorrow's fish pie and then I realised it didn't have to be Grin

I did burn my tongue in my eagerness to eat it straight from the oven though. Ouch.

Oh complete disaster of a day, would have to say my first FD fail.

I usually work from home so am completely control of my routine but had jury service this morning and was very nervous about it. Woke up, felt sick, had a slice of toast instead of my normal green tea. Knew it wouldn't help my fast but figured I needed to settle my stomach. Got to the court early, went into a cafe and ordered a latte and added sugar - completely stupid thing to do, could have just as easily had tea. Was then in court for 3 hours, had nothing to drink at all, was dismissed, nipped into m&s for some general food shopping, bought a sandwich. FFS. OK it was a reasonably healthy one but wheat does nothing for me on a FD.

Got home, loads of things went wrong, chased tail all afternoon, have barely drank any liquids, now have total headache and want to abandon FD. Probably will do and have takeaway and wine with DH. Or at the very least the FD dinner I was planning, plus wine.

So lessons learned:
I am definitely a stress eater/drinker

If I know I'm having a stressy day I need to plan breakfast (don't normally do it on a FD) - an egg would have been infinitely better than the toast.

If I'm going to be out of the house on a FD I need access to a litre of water, so I need to carry that with me to be on the safe side.

And importantly this is a woe for life so in the grand scheme of things, as long as I learn from today, don't go wild tonight, next week I will be back on track with my FDs.

Sad but also Smile

(Sorry for epic post but I find it helps to write these things down to help me understand what I'm doing. I would never have said I was a stress eater before starting this woe.)

Laska42 · 24/10/2013 19:14

Hi all, another fast day here ,2nd in a row so I get my 4:3 in this week .

MR Ls roasted carrot and red pepper soup ( on the recipe thread) for lunch , I make it without the lentils these days and its yummy and less calories

Then big plate of cabbage and h/m veggie dhal with lots of chilli for dins ... I love spicy food and find chilli satiates on FDs (and all days actually)

cuckoo I hope you enjoy the curry (Aubergines and Chick pea one?) its very yum .. will make it myself again I think this weekend

itsaboat not as bad as me! a few years ago I booked a sailing weekend away (without DH) only to have him remind me it was our 2nd wedding anniversary!. oops Blush I went anyway as it as expensive and all paid for , and luckily we are still married!

And on that note, many Congrats on being 43 years married B&W (is that the big tease on the other thread? )
.

SchrodingersFanny · 24/10/2013 19:16

WF don't beat yourself up, it sounds stressful.

Why the no snacking? Surely as long as it is within your calorie count it is OK? I like snacks! I don't eat mindlessly, but a slice of goats or cereal bar mid-morning etc. Why is it so bad?

BsshBossh · 24/10/2013 19:35

Dotty I'm simply not bothered about eating on FDs and no longer hungry so I'm satisfied breaking a fast with a cup a soup, an apple and a 10 cal jelly. I have a feeling I might return to the odd 0-cal FDs I did successfully before the summer.

FD really went well today. Will break my fast in a couple of hours.

Laska42 · 24/10/2013 19:53

Schrodinger the trouble is that snacks can easily build up and you can end up with not enough for a 'meal' at all . I'm not trying to moralise here about your choices if eating that way works for you, and yes its true that DR M doesn't prescribe when or how to eat your 500cals as such. But many of us who have been doing it a while ,(I dont know how long you have as i've only just come back here) have found that a gap of several hours with no food at all (most people aim for 16hrs ) works best for weight loss and (we hope) long-term health benefits

Also (as no doubt Tip will endorse), snacking was only invented in the sixties and seventies as a way for food companies to sell more product , -often 'empty' calories full of high sugar and starch-which in a short time creates more 'hunger' and a 'need' for more empty calories , thus potential weight gain.. But worse snacking gets the stomach into a mode where it never actually experiences hunger and so the brain becomes afraid of it. so then people can worry about hunger which isnt really there and consequently can overeat.

Its what Dr John Briffa calls the diet trap .. I highly recommend reading his books (escape the Diet Trap) and his blog

I've found since fasting that 'hunger' isn't often real hunger and that it goes away . Its been liberating for me to lose my fear of hunger .. I never used to go on a journey without worrying about what and when I'd be able to eat , now I can go all day and not buy any of the over priced and often unhealthy stuff at rail stations etc Grin

SchrodingersFanny · 24/10/2013 20:13

I don't snack on a fast day. I sometimes have a 50cal soup at lunch, but that is over 16 hours without food.

For me I tend to split my lunch at school, so half at break, half at lunch at NFD. My snacks are often an apple, a slice of toast, banana. I dont really eat processed food on a regular basis. And in count everything on mfp. I'm much more aware of how much things are now.

I only eat when I am genuinely hungry, drink first etc.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/10/2013 20:19

snacks and also junk food were thankfully not around when I was growing up (1960s) or I would have to be moved around now by crane ! I was brought up on 3 or 4 homemade meals a day, no snacks, max one small dessert.

If I plan to eat on an FD, I try to have all my cals for lunch, as Dr Varady recommends. I think she and others found that one meal brought more health benefits than two or more, due to the bod having more time to rest and repair between insulin rushes. I don't know if the timing of the one meal is important.

Laska42 · 24/10/2013 20:28

That sounds pretty fine if its NFDs , I eat two meals on FDs.. but on non fast days I do sometimes 'snack', but my snacks are often (oh dear ) Wine in the evening though Grin . Its interesting though how my WOE has changed even on non fast days .. even during my 'summer off' when i didnt fast or count calories I never went back to snacking and I reckon as I 'only ' put back on 7lbs (not saying im at all happy with that though Angry though I knew what I was doing of course , but I couldn't have been that far over my TDEE all told for the whole four months .

How long have you been doing 5:2 Schrodinger? How much have you lost so far?

SchrodingersFanny · 24/10/2013 20:34

About 8 weeks I think. I've lost 1st 4lbs so far.

Laska42 · 24/10/2013 20:56

Thats fantastic well done!

southeastdweller · 24/10/2013 21:19

lucy How're you and your little girl doing today?

BigChocFrenzy · 24/10/2013 21:21

serving size alert I just read the small print on my post-training packet of jerky: that little pack is 3 servings ! How silly, I accidentally did a 600 cal FD.
Well, I did 75 mins spin and weights this evening, so this mistake doesn't matter. I'm happy with the FD.
BUT shows it's important to check any new product on an FD

annielewis · 24/10/2013 21:23

Wooooo this thread moves fast!!! I popped in on the end of the last thread, am here looking for inspiration and you lot certainly provide that!

Just wondering how long it took all of you to feel like you settled in to this WOE and started really seeing results - I am results driven and feel like I need to at least feel thinner to keep the momentum going!!!

Am doing a FD tomorrow. ALso do you all log on to MFP to calorie track?

Cheers

BigChocFrenzy · 24/10/2013 21:25

I won't be eating again until tomorrow, so 600 cals in 38 hrs is ok.

Schrodinger 18 lb in 8 weeks is fantastic ! 5:2 obviously suits you.

somewherebecomingrain · 24/10/2013 21:40

bigchoc mistakes will happen. You sound very on top of it.

wilson totally understand about writing it down to understand. This thread is so useful for that. I can't deal with stress on Fds.

laska fascinating on snacking.

Another FD here winds to a close. I just watched an episode of the great british bake off. Does anyone else do that on a fast day? A kind of pleasurable self-flagellation.

Must remember not to nosedive into cake tomorrow.

BsshBossh · 24/10/2013 21:40

Schrodinger terrific loss, well done.
annielewis I settled into 5:2 immediately - straight into single-meal 24 hour fasts and lost immediately too. Intermittent fasting definitely suits me.

FD a success and now over. Easy one for me today (which is rare as I usually find Thursday fasts much more difficult than post-weekend Monday FDs).

Inspired by a thread in Chat tonight, I am planning on baking a potato Delia-style for lunch tomorrow and having it with a classic baked beans, grated Cheddar and coleslaw filling. Inexplicably (cause I love them) haven't had a jacket potato in more than a year so I am so looking forward to it.

BsshBossh · 24/10/2013 21:42

somewherebecomingrain I watch all my catch-up food TV on fast days and also browse back issues of food magazines because I love planning NFD meals. I don't find it hard (or self-masochistic) at all cause I know I can eat whatever I want tomorrow.
