Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Laska I'm ok re. weight. Lost about 15lbs in total and could really do with shifting another 4-5lbs but have slackened off overeat on NFDs which explains why nothing else is moving.
Still, feel well, healthy and all my clothes are either too big / fitting really nicely so that's the main thing!

frenchfancy · 23/10/2013 20:44

Can't believe we are on thread 29!

On holiday this week so eating (and Wine ) far too much, but I'll be fasting again next week. Best of all i have no guilt as I know any gain will come off again very quickly.

Laska42 · 23/10/2013 20:45

Bssh do come back to maintainers, we are all up and down sometimes as well. but the chat is just as good .. I'm not abandoning it , but just need some extra discipline right now and I thought seeing everyone else here would also be good.

Betsy Thanks for asking about my son, he's not started yet , but yes we are all thrilled for him e has been unemployed for so long, hopefully he will make a go of it .

Yes I still mostly have 2 meals on FDs . I find it works best for me..as I've found that if I leave all my cals for one 500 evening meal its too much in one go and I cant sleep. Its usually near enough the same as its always been - 2 eggs and slice of wafer smoked thin ham for breakfast..and big plate of veggies sometimes with prawns or dhal) or soup in the evening. I do also get my 16 hrs in ..

One thing I have found is on non fast days my portions have gone right down (ha! ok so yes the photo of lunch with Tip on my profile shows a bit of a lie here, -but I didn't eat quite all of it!! )

But remember, although I know the theory , I'm back because I strayed!.

I think there is really only one way .. (and Tip is so right), NO SNACKING, EVER and Ill add 2 more things; Keep reminding yourself , WHY you really want to be slim and If you do want to succeed ,keep to the routine - 5:2, 4:3, IF, whatever - if you do it, it works .

I heard on the radio today that there has been a study with diabetes patients (somewhere in the UK , ill look it up) keeping them on a daily 600cal diet for a few months, and surprise surprise , they nearly all have come off their insulin .. (and lost weight of course )

NotAsTired · 23/10/2013 21:54

That's right, Laska. I can't quite remember, because I heard about it a year or so ago. Those with diabetes were given only 600 calories for about 6 weeks I think. The patients' diabetes were reversed. No need for insulin. Of course, it was done under close medical supervision, but what fantastic results.

wrigglebum · 23/10/2013 21:58

Well FD nearly over and despite being slightly hungover I managed at about 350 calories. Been busy with playgroup, a workout, lots of walking, PTA meetings and playing with the boys. I hope they have a really amazing cake at playgroup tomorrow because I deserve it (yes tip, I know that is technically snacking but it is shared with friends so kind of an extra meal Smile).

I don't seem to get the FD coldness a lot of you talk about. In fact, this evening I'm feeling very toasty. Wonder why.

SchrodingersFanny · 23/10/2013 22:16

Good fast day, no snacking. Came in under 500cals and did a 5k run, so feeling good.

Hope I lose some weight this week.

BsshBossh · 23/10/2013 22:28

Well done today's fasters.

I'm fasting tomorrow - who's with me?

BigChocFrenzy · 23/10/2013 23:02

Boxing finished, great fun and I've scrubbed off the gloves & hung sweaty kit, lovely !

NotAsTired no, you're not the only dirty-minded one; I read it as BJ too and wondered how many cals - probably not in mfp Grin

Bssh I am considering fasting tomorrow -then Saturday as well Shock I am determined to stop Saturday pigging and making it an FD may be the only way. I bet I'll be the only Saturday FDer !

I plan to 4:3 for couple of weeks, because at 57 yr, the bod needs a hard kick to shift.

rubbishfamily333 · 23/10/2013 23:22

Hey new thread,

I am just marking my spot hole building upto fasting Confused

BigChocFrenzy · 23/10/2013 23:34

Very apt for FD / NFD, from an unexpected source: the apostle Paul Shock

"Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth." (Romans 14: 2.3).

night all

Breadandwine · 24/10/2013 02:01

BigChoc I'll match your Romans with Luke ch18 v9-12:

9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable:
10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector.
12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'

Guess who's the good guy in this!! Grin

Lovely to see FF WW Laska make an appearance - I knew you hadn't really gone away. Smile

Nice to see you back RY, or should it be BennettGirl? And PPsCat! Hope I haven't left anyone out, that would be awful!

BB thanks for your hard work! (I know it's a labour of love, but still…) Smile

I'm on the net looking for suitable words to include in my wife's anniversary card (43 years and counting! - And I can still find it in me to Smile!)

I'm absolute crap at writing cards - I put it down to my dyslexia (comes in handy sometimes).

I'm possibly a little bit p*ssed since I've made a bit of a hole in this bottle of port that was nearing its BBD, so I had to rescue it…sort of.

I consider myself fairly switched on (not exactly down with the kids, but…) and I have to confess that the conversation about BJs, etc, may as well be conducted in a foreign language for all I'm getting out of it! [Complaint!]

Laska about you needing two meals on a FD because 500 cals is too much of an evening:

I fast every Monday - and I'd like to do a complete liquid fast every week, but my wife won't allow me to do this [thumb - under], so we compromise with one complete fast a month. On the other Mondays, I keep my calories as low as possible, whilst still filling my (side) plate.

My record so far is about

Breadandwine · 24/10/2013 02:09

Found it! The right quote, I mean:

I loved you then
I love you still
I always have
I always will.

Too cheesy?

Too late!

Grin
CrystalDeCanter · 24/10/2013 02:49

Breadandwine that's lovely, congratulations on your anniversary 43years is tremendous.

A friend of mine gave me the book, which I'm reading and really enjoying at the moment. I'm finding it really inspiring to read the additional, not just weight, benefits to 5:2. I'm considering doing tomorrow as a fast day too so doing 4:3 this week as am working and need to shift some lard sharpish.

Also, someone on another thread said that consecutive fast days aren't any good, I like to fast mon and Tuesday but obv don't want it to be ineffective, is she right? Should I rearrange my fast days?

Breadandwine · 24/10/2013 03:13

Thanks CDC

2 days together are fine - don't worry! Smile

CrystalDeCanter · 24/10/2013 05:14

Good oh thanks breadandwine

BigChocFrenzy · 24/10/2013 07:44

Breadandwine Congratulations to you both on 43 years, wonderful achievement Flowers

Have a lovely anniversary Wine Cake

MelanieCheeks · 24/10/2013 08:05

It's not that 2 consecutive days "aren't any good" - it's just that they can be more difficult! But if it suits you, and you dont find it overly-difficult, then that's fine.

somewherebecomingrain · 24/10/2013 08:15

Hiya fasting today hello bssh and any others.

Itsaboatjack · 24/10/2013 08:17

Happy Anniversary B&W

I'm pushing my FD back to tomorrow as me and dh have managed to get lunchtime off together so we are going to go and try out a new fancy Indian restaurant near us.

Good luck today's fasters.

BetsyBell · 24/10/2013 08:23

Aw, congratulations B&W, 43 years is tremendous Flowers

No 'formal' exercise for me this morning as I've massively underslept thanks to a properly traumatic nightmare. I've already nearly poked my eye out this morning putting a towel on my head so I don't fancy my chances with a pair of weights in this state!

Fast day today, it's going to be a fun one isn't it?!

Got a supermarket shop to do this morning so I think I'll stock up on the meal soups to make life easier today.

OP posts:
rubbishfamily333 · 24/10/2013 09:18

Ok I'm starting on Monday for definite! Was meant to be today but I chicken out and also I have a date. Grin

So I'm planning for Monday. I'm thinking:

Lunch - carrot and cumin soup less than 150cals

Dinner - pork loin, salad leaves, cherry tomatoes, 191 cals total

Late snack - carrot and cumin soup less than 150 cals

So just under 500cals. Do you think that looks ok and I won't be starving? Confused

BsshBossh · 24/10/2013 09:19

Many congratulations Mr & Mrs Breadandwine Thanks. 43 years - what an achievement! Feel free to pass on any tips for a long marriage :)

I also manage < 150 calories on fast days. I find that enough these days to satiate on FDs. But I'm 8 months into 5:2: for the first 7 months I needed/wanted all my 500 cals!

Hello fellow Thursday fasters . Let's do it!

BsshBossh · 24/10/2013 09:21

rubbish enjoy your date and come back later to tell us all a out it.

BsshBossh · 24/10/2013 09:21

*about it

mehefin · 24/10/2013 09:26

Hi everyone old and new.

I'm still here in the background fasting regularly.

Greenkit I am a shift worker, 2 nights and 2 days a week. Inspired by Angie I now have a good routine.

Finished work yesterday at 8am ate beans, mushroom and tomatoes on toast when I got home and have only had water and a mug of bouillon since. Planning on having my first food around noon today.

BigChoc I am a regular Saturday faster, fits in with my working week so you will not be alone.

Congrats to B&W
