Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

FD. I've had M&S Chicken and Veg Soup for lunch (about 240 cals). I'm hungry but OK with it thus far. Drinking lots. I'll have big raw salad at dinner - I find lots of crunch and chewing really helps.

Hang in there everyone - we are halfway to bedtime & you can eat all the lovelies you want tomorrow!!!

mttum · 07/11/2013 13:58

Dotty, it was just an "informal" solitary retreat, in a tiny cottage in the North Wales hills. I am a Buddhist, so lots of meditation, reflection etc and NO TV, internet etc. Yes, it was amazing, really, so rare to be able to really slow life down so that you can really appreciate it Smile

Keep going fasters, not long now Grin

Bsssh, hope you're feeling better and rested now.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 14:08

Mttum Sounds lovely! Don't suppose you would like to organise a coach trip for next time....? Hmm

Refreshes thread with eager eyes darting left and right looking round for Tip

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 14:11

I am in anything but a peaceful retreat atm!

Bloomin' neighbour drilling for England. I will not be surprised if a chunk of one of our walls falls off before end of day.

Trying to be mindful. But very hard to concentrate on anything!

Refresh thread

Urgh. Grizzly children, up since 3, slightly dodgy tum after big meal out last night and a fuzzy head from a third glass of wine. And it's only 9am. No bodypump today but will go for a swim and possibly sit in the rather dingy hot tub with a new book.

How's everyone else?

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 14:16

Hi Whimsical loads of us fasting today. Go for your swim and get in that hot tub! However dingy it is! I am sure afterwards you will feel......

Refreshed....

annielewis · 07/11/2013 14:18

Am drinking herbal tea now, agree its about keeping warm too. Think TOTM is imminent too, am cold, sleep deprived, hungry and bad tempered.... and hopefully getting skinnier! :)

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 14:22

Yeah an' you know what's so great about herbal tea Annie, it's.......

Refreshing.....

(Thanks for totm)

mttum · 07/11/2013 14:22

Ha ha, Cuckoo, that sounds like it would be fun, if a little crowded Wink

MrsFlorrick · 07/11/2013 14:22

Afternoon Grin

After mini fast on Monday and proper fast on Tuesday, yesterday ended up slightly over TDEE (100cals or so) as I had a cheese and wine fest. It was yummy and worth it Grin

Actually hungover today which isn't good. Not fasting today as such. Didn't eat until an hour ago (soup and banana) and I've done my Jillian workout. Casserole with dumplings later. If I stay away from biscuits cheese and wine (and I will, my poor head), it should come in under 1000 for today so a mini fast.

Very tired today too. DD was up during the night. A neighbours dog had a fight with a fox during the night which woke DD and as soon as she saw DHs bed empty (he is away with work), she clambers in and starts prodding me wanting to talk at me. Not helpful given my wine and cheese consumption. This went on for several hours before she capitulated and went to sleep.

It's surprising I've not eaten all the biscuits and choc in the kitchen really but the day is yet young..... So I must be vigilant and stick to my plan and look forward to my casserole.

Good luck to fasters and mini fasters for the rest of the day. The afternoon is often a dangerous time!!

Just time for aBrew before the school run.

BeCoolFucker · 07/11/2013 14:37

MrsF I had a glass of wine last night and was going to have another when I remembered I would be F today, so I had herbal tea instead!

And I know after today I can drink as much as I like all weekend - not that I drink much these days at all and I'm quite surprised I even opened a bottle on a Weds.

BeCoolFucker · 07/11/2013 14:42

oh so the point of above post was I so don't want to have even a mild hangover on a F day!

toffeesponge · 07/11/2013 14:45

How are you all keeping warm on FD? I have been so cold lately, the weather has definitely turned and we really want to cut our usage as it is 35% higher than the average home Shock though tbh we use the washer, dishwasher and drier loads rather than having the heating on, but even with jumpers on my hands are frozen. That stone I have lost Grin must have been keeping me warmish!

mttum · 07/11/2013 14:51

toffee, I work at home usually! but in the cold months keep warm by going into the office! Grin

At home I put everything on, 2 jumpers, dressing gown, woolly hat, gloves. Can you tell I live alone, apart from DD who doesn't feel the cold?

WilsonFrickett · 07/11/2013 15:00

Two jumpers, thick socks. A scarf as well (but I make it a niace one in case someone comes to the door). Oh and an oil-filled radiator, cheap to run but makes the room toasty.

Talkinpeace · 07/11/2013 15:01

I have a lovely ancient shrug jumper that covers my hands - it is only for in the house. At the moment my raynauds is playing up so fidgeting.
The other thing on keeping warm / saving money is to keep bedrooms cooler and living rooms warmer. And stand up as much as possible ...

BsshBossh · 07/11/2013 15:11

mttum that retreat sounds just right for me. I'm a complete introvert and crave solitude and thinking time (even working home alone all day is not enough) but with a family it's difficult to make the time at the moment. But it's on my bucket list :)

Okay, FD hard but fine at the moment. Posh I highly recommend a long walk outside if you're feeling hungry - it really helps me.

BsshBossh · 07/11/2013 15:15

All these children up last night... Must be something in the air.

TOM week - do I weigh in tomorrow?

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2013 15:17

Both for keeping hunger at bay and for keeping warm, I hammer out a quick set of 20 pressups. They are used to this at work. Anyone joining me

I'm writing reports at the moment, so my mind is wondering to food. I manage my FDs by holding out until it's time to cycle home, because there I just grab my kit and cycle to the gym. That stops hunger until bedtime, when I've trained myself not to eat.

Throughout the day, keep saying "I can eat it tomorrrow"

BsshBossh · 07/11/2013 15:18

Wilson I have small portable radiator too (electric I think?). Would this be cheaper to use than heating up the whole house? I work from home so only need heat in the study. Also, for anyone who knows, would it be cheaper to run the central heating but turn off all radiators except the study?

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2013 15:22

btw cuckoo not a slither of choc or sweet junk has passed my lips since the NNN pledge. I presume FDs have kept you an honest woman.

This weekend, I'll make my own buckwheat, almond milk & cinammon pud instead of rice pud for the coming week

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 15:30

BigChoc I am nothing if not honest!

Other than the pre mentioned quantity of sugar added to coffee, no, not one single iota of anything even closely related to sweet/sugary snacks has passed these lips!

Best bit - hasn't been a struggle! Not counting on the same luck next week, but will continue with it all the same!

Mttum Ssshh! I won't tell if you won't tell Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2013 15:33

Bssh Portable electric heaters are often more expensive than CH. I use CH radiators only in the rooms I need warm, but I decide these from the beginning. It is often more expensive to keep raising a room temperature from cold to warm than maintaining it warm.
(sigh) but it is so dependent on specific factors & characteristics - # people, efficiency of portable, CH, house insulation, room size .....

Also, if going away for Xmas, an environment engineer advised me to leave the CH on 8-10C in all rooms, with HW timed to come on twice per day to safeguard against burst pipes.

WilsonFrickett · 07/11/2013 16:03

Bssh I think that's one of those questions with so many variables! Basically, my central heating comes on in the morning, so I make sure to shut my study door then. When I come back from taking DS to school it is toasty warm, so I work with the door shut, which lasts till around noon. When I stop to eat I plug the oil-filled heater in for an hour, room is then toasty warm until it's time to do pick-up, after pick-up CH is on bc we're then using the whole house.

It doesn't seem to me as if just heating one room for one hour could be dearer than the CH, but I don't know.
