Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Postman do you think?

I've never really had any issues with allergies to anything. I did go through a few phases shortly after we got our dog but that was more around face and body. It would pass after few days. I read that the body, if left to it, can often build up an immunity to whatever is causing reaction. This certainly seemed to be case with dog.

This itching though, has been going on for a couple of months. The only dietary change I can think of is reduced carbs! Even before starting 5:2 I had tried to avoid bread as much as poss, because it bloats me so much.

I've been searching online for answers and one of things I tried was side effects of Omeprazole in form of itching. I did read that some people had had an allergic reaction to the dye (luminous yellow) in the capsules. Hence reason I wanted to try stopping.

Is there anything over counter I could try, to see if helps.

I seem to be developing things in last couple of years. Seem to much more sensitive to things these days!

BeCoolFucker · 07/11/2013 10:08

1st week, 2nd FD.

I had black coffee this morning - first one in about 20 years I reckon. I used to drink black coffee then somewhere down the line (I think probably after first visiting France) I switched to lattes, that got bigger and bigger. I think a large latte with semi-skimmed milk has about 200 cals! I've been hooked.

But this year I am slowly one by one releasing all these "Must haves". I've cluttered my home and am moving daily towards a more minimal life.

And now, finally, I'm starting to declutter my body and food habits.

The black coffee was fine - I know now I can break the latte habit and enjoy black coffee. I don't know why it seemed such a huge thing - it is a small thing, and the actual act of switching was essentially an easy thing. Certainly much much much easier than giving up coffee entirely! Smile

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 10:08

(((((ToffeeSponge)))))

I've been wondering where you were!! So lovely to hear from you! Was worried the half term had broken you Grin
Thanks

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 10:15

Clearly I'm not very busy at mo Grin

BeCool I was same with blk coffee. Used to then stopped. Now if someone gives me white coffee I gag!

Have latteish's as a treat on fd. Half and half. Yesterday my Pumpkinless Spice Latteish, was just under half mug of semi skimmed milk, topped up with kettle. Heat milk first though. I stuck mug on scales and weighed because couldn't find jug. 130g milk (nearly half mug) was 59.6 cals.
Easy to fit in on fd!!

Am trying today with fully skimmed as out of semi. Will try on its own and later half water again to experiment.

mttum · 07/11/2013 10:19

Morning everyone! Thought I would "delurk" for a while, after a longish absence. Thanks for the thought Tip, I've been away on a solitary retreat for a while, no phone/internet etc. While the retreat was great in most respects, an unfortunate side effect was that I put on 4.5lb Shock. I think it was because, without other distractions, food became a bit of an obsession; interesting, because a good part of the reason for the retreat was to increase mindfulness. Hmmmm, need to think about that some more Hmm.

Anyway, not too bothered because I know a few FDs will sort it out.

Dotty I have also lapsed into a bit of binging and snacking (especially late night). I don't seem to have the patience for MFP so am going to concentrate more on no snacks and drink more water.

Oh, and I am joining all today's fasters too; may the force be with us!

toffeesponge · 07/11/2013 10:29

Thank you Cuckoo. HT was either really good or really terrible. The boys were awful and DD was in hospital very ill. In between we met up with my oldest friend and her children which was lovely.

WilsonFrickett · 07/11/2013 10:30

Well done toffeesponge a stone is a great milestone Grin

Well I had a huge lunch yesterday (I do the odd freelance restaurant review) so didn't eat tea. I did however have some wine, but I'm still counting it as an accidental mini-liquid fast. Had some miso after the school run, veg curry for lunch and turkey burgers for dinner so will come in at 500 no problem.

SCALE VICTORY: I weighed today and have lost four pounds so that's half a stone in total Grin Grin Grin. I've found I lose in chunks, put a couple of pounds back on after a non-fast weekend, then yo-yo a bit before sticking but I'm still delighted. Hitting the 9's for Christmas!!!

NONSCALE FAIL: I bought a size 14 jumper yesterday because that's the size I've been forever. But I've just lost half a stone. It's huge! However not too much of a disaster because I can now fit a t-shirt underneath it. Need to get it into my head I'm a 12 now!

Happy fasting!

BsshBossh · 07/11/2013 10:42

Off for a nap now (a perk of working from home) as I'm feeling nauseous. God, I'm a lightweight!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 11:33

Betsy have attempted first ever MN msg! Can you let me know if you got it alright?

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 11:42

Hi Mttum

Wilson That would be a NSV for me! Love it when things are too big! Have even noticed when towelling dry how much less of me there is! Got a long way to go but that makes me feel svelte! Grin

Toffee Poor you! Sounds like a lot of dd's have been in the wars recently! Is she ok now? Nothing too serious I hope! Thanks

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2013 11:49

FD ok so far. Just enjoying my 40 cal cocoa: organic defatted cocoa powder, water, dash of almond milk, Splenda < the MN favourite Options also has chemicals, I think>.
Also having smoked salmon with lemon and a small veg J for lunch, as preparation for evening training.

Re sugar substitutes, the 2 with zero sugar / carbs:

  1. Stevia is a herb, no negatives except a slightly liquorice taste, so works for spicy things (I always use in my herbal tea) but not when you want a proper sugar taste - yuk in cocoa for me.

  2. Erithritol is sold in some health shops. It is a sugar alcohol, but doesn't normally cause gas or bloating unless you eat huge amounts.

  3. Other sugar alcohols are "fart alert". Maltilol especially seems to empty my colon the next 24 hrs. TMI alert !

Must confess, I bake with Splenda Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2013 11:54

Welcome back, toffee/MissS. I do hope nothing serious with your DD.
Hi mtum

Somewhere:
Almond flour is just almonds milled to flour fineness. Excellent for baking with little insulin effect.
btw: almond milk is really just almond puree / butter mixed with a lot of water.
Almond puree (health food shops) is a yum alternative to pnut butter

Oooh, back to work now.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2013 12:00

PS cuckoo You do sound poorly. NNN definitely advised, because too much sugar can cause all sorts of issues . Seriously, several years ago, just by switching to low carb, I instantly banished continual colds with fever and badly ulcerated throat. I stopped low carbing after a few years - very restrictive and socially isolating. However, fine for a few weeks cure.

Do take care of yourself. Flowers

SchrodingersFanny · 07/11/2013 12:01

I've not posted for a while. Ive been having problems with my medication and doctors surgery, meaning a sudden withdrawal and then start again. Today was supposed to be fast day, but I've been gagging and throwing up any drinks because of meds I think. So I'm going to do 16:8 and not overdo things.

toffeesponge · 07/11/2013 12:20

DD was very poorly but is almost back to normal now thank goodness. For a while it was thought she had meningitis so I was stressed out big time. She has only been properly poorly once before when 1 so it came as a shock.

I have just made Quiche Lorraine and then to up some bits I made another one with onion, mushrooms, sweet corn, spinach, cheese, olives and red peppers. No chance of calorie counting!

AngieM2 · 07/11/2013 12:25

betsy as for a special '30' name....how about something along the lines of....its the big 30 and its only 10 little fasts til the big C.

BsshBossh · 07/11/2013 12:48

Welcome back toffee and big hug to your DD.
Welcome back too mttum and Schrod.

I've had a wee nap and feel much better. Will go for a long walk soon before school pickup. Will have to work tonight to catch up but it'll distract me from food :)

Talkinpeace · 07/11/2013 13:00

Lovely to see people pop back in after a break knowing that they are always welcome to join back in the conversation where they left off!

Fasting today because DH decided he needed to. So I did "legs bums and tums" at the gym and ache from head to foot!
Have to pass round trays of biccies at a meeting this afternoon before I get my supper. Ho hum.

Toffeesponge Losing a stone is excellent. AND you are getting a much better relationship with food. Well done.

Betsy 30th thread .... hmm shall have to think but yes, if the timing is right I'll be sitting on the refresh button cos I'm sad like that.

Dotty342kids · 07/11/2013 13:03

welcome back Mttum, your retreat sounds amazing. What / where / why? And good luck with the no snacking.
I currently have mini chocolate brownies calling to me from the kitchen. I'm determind to resist them and if I must have one, to have only a half one, and following my FD dinner, not as an evil snack.

Off for another glass of water and some hooping Smile

annielewis · 07/11/2013 13:04

Ok, so have been doing really well with FDs til now, am bloody STARVING!!!! Have just had a bowl of salad with a little bit of ham but could literally eat all the food in the house!

Am blaming my kids who are sick and as a result we all had a crappy nights 'sleep' (or nonsleep)

Am off to clean a bit more house, last FD i cleared 3 kitchen drawers and a cupboard including cleaning the very top of the cupboard. Distract distract distract.......

Bssh - no sleep SUCKS doesn't it!

Stay strong everyone....

PoshPaula · 07/11/2013 13:08

I am losing weight! Yay!

BUT...... fasting again today (second FD this week) and I am SO hungry. And irritable. What does everyone else do in this situation? And I really don't feel like drinking water....

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 13:13

Tip .... can you hear me revving my refresh button Wink

Betsy's at work apparently and will do later. I know, cos we're like that (crosses fingers) or cos I msg'd a title suggestion

Which is what I'm supposed to be doing right now, so will no doubt miss it! Hope the thread lasts long enough!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 13:15

........... CLENCH .........

WilsonFrickett · 07/11/2013 13:32

Posh a hot drink? An options (40 cal) or miso soup (mine is 20 cal but check packaging). And review your pattern. It may be you need to eat breakfast on your FD, then go through to dinner. Others find eating unleashes the hunger beast so wait till dinner. I'm on the fence - no breakfast (though had a miso today) but I have lunch and dinner.

Experiment and see what's right for you. But do drink some water Smile

Talkinpeace · 07/11/2013 13:41

poshpaula I mainline mugs of tea on fast days - if nothing else it keeps my hands warm and stops the bloody Raynauds kicking off (typing with a stone cold bright yellow finger is a PITA)

drink water

clench
