Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

FD fail here. Managed fast til lunch, had about 200 cals, but got some bad news, nothing v important in the great scheme but important to me Sad
So anyway, big feed over and done with but 500 cals was fast passed with the first slice of pizza second slice, garlic bread, wedges, wine, choc, crisps
Kitchen now closed but I think I'll not be recording a loss this week. Never mind, just a blip, I could easily do more damage, I have the ammo but I'm drawing a close to my pity party. Out for dinner tomorrow but light lunch and bit of exercise planned so that'll offset the damage. Sorry for the moan

BsshBossh · 17/10/2013 21:28

BigChoc yep I drink loads during the day so was wondering whether there was additional benefit from drinking loads last thing (perhaps none so I shouldn't sweat it).

Oh, now what do I fancy eating on NFD Friday... Fasting has got me back in the habit of cooking from scratch more regularly (lunches too - fewer sarnies, more quinoa or bulghur wheat based salads packed with nuts, seeds and veggies) also baking. I'm making Moroccan lamb meatballs in a tomato sauce laced with pomegranate molasses for tomorrow's dinner.

But on weekend NFDs (which for me start on Friday Blush) I always fancy some real treats (last Friday I had triple layer creamed carrot cake and a gooey oat, cranberry and pecan nut cookie for breakfast). For some reason I'm thinking Ritter Sport marzipan and dark chocolate tomorrow...

BsshBossh · 17/10/2013 21:30

JB moan away! You had bad news but already you're thinking positively re your food intake and balancing it all out Thanks (but no Cake!).

Talkinpeace · 17/10/2013 21:35

JB30 another FD fail here ! (yes, even I get them). DH home after 4 hour drive. Half bottle of wine Grin

BigChocFrenzy
As far as I am aware - and BreadandWine is very clued up too because he regularly keeps an eye over here www.52fastdiet.co.uk/ there is very little research about 5:2 per se because it was practically invented for the MM programme last summer.
However there is bucket loads of research - going back to the 1930's about intermittent fasting (separate from the misery of permanent calorie restriction) because many religions use it and it has been used on hospital patients.
I'm part of a child health cohort study anyway so when I have my next set of tests (summer 2015) I will be added to the data sets on fasting as well - I had a full body scan only a few months before I started conveniently.

and remember - no more carb pre loading until your body fat is under 20% Wink

MissStrawberry · 17/10/2013 21:36

JB30 - it doesn't matter. Hopefully you enjoyed the food and it is just one day. I had a really difficult week last week, did 2 efforts at fasting and put 3lbs on but it doesn't matter.

You will be fine.

Hope you are okay with regards to the difficulties Flowers.

JB30 · 17/10/2013 21:39

Thanks Bsssh, I'll try not eat the flowers Grin
Might do a kick boxing DVD in the morning, sad & cross about my news (didn't get a job I'd had 4 interviews for and it's dragged on 9 weeks, more stages than X factor)
Down but not out Wink

Dotty342kids · 17/10/2013 21:48

TIP that's so lovely about your Christmas nomination! Well deserved Smile
For the first time in a long time I've not been able to do two FDs this week due to work commitments taking me away from home. Oh well!

rubbishfamily I'm a hula hooper too. Got mine a couple of weeks ago and had a few days of epic bruising but that's subsided now and I'm definitely getting better at it though when I get tired it all goes a bit wrong. I try to hoop for 10-15 mins a day though it falls to the floor numerous times within that Grin

SchrodingersFanny · 17/10/2013 22:02

Carb loading? You mean before a FD? I love carbs, I'm not prepared to give them up totally for anything!

Mmmmm bread.

womblesofwestminster · 17/10/2013 22:02

Hi everyone. I'm new to MN but not new to this WOE. I've been on 5:2 for a year! Fast day tomorrow. It's my toughest day of the week.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/10/2013 22:38

tip Navy Calculator gives my BF as 21% for mornings, but higher for evenings, when my tum has expanded ! My aim is to be sub-20 all day, even after BigChoc.

I do 16:8 NFDs: huge lunch, small tea, stop eating at least 3 hrs before training, sometimes a protein shake afterwards - much too late to eat then.
As you suggest, I may need to reduce the carbs. But, if I barf on the boxing bag, I'll let you know!
Night all

rubbishfamily333 · 17/10/2013 23:20

dotty have you noticed much difference in tone to your tummy or hips? I think I will start it again, I like doing it while watching tv :)

cuckoo13 · 17/10/2013 23:57

Evening All (tips imaginary hat).
So sounds like it could go either way then on the boob sag. I was adequate before dd but not big (boobies), but during bfing and weight gain I reached G cup. With my height and without the filler that means they hang! Reminds me of a song....
Do your boobs hang low
Do they wobble to and fro
Should you tie them in a knot
Should you tie them in a bow

I'm just worried that as lose more weight they will shrivel like burst balloons, hanging like pebbles in socks and I will never again want to take my bra off in front of someone!
Please someone give me hope that about skin elasticity if I exercise, moisturise and stay hydrated???

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 00:18

On a separate note...
I'm up for fd tmw BigChoc - had bit of splurge this evening and want to be extra good before weekend as I have just replenished freezer supplies of b&j peanut butter cup (insert wide eyed slobbering face)

Normally Fridays are considered wkend but I'm feeling pro active this week and know that these things rarely last. So I am ON IT! Yeah! until the morning Grin

Also Hello to everyone new and Thanks for all feedback Thanks and Cake all round. X

whimsicalname · 18/10/2013 02:57

Gosh, it's been a busy few days on here! I had planned a fd today (thurs) but sacked it after a very bad night's sleep and knowing my husband had his vasectomy today, so thought I might need to be more supportive than I can manage on an empty stomach! Fingers crossed for a better night's sleep tonight and a good fd Friday. And good luck to any of you fasting on a Friday. Wwekend will start Saturday around here!

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 07:05

Morning everybody!!!

Fd going well here. Admittedly haven't got out of bed yet but PMA and all that Grin.

Going to make the aubergine, chickpea and spinach curry from recipe thread. Think was Laska?? Have with cauli rice and pretend it's just a normal fri night with a curry. Will try to ignore the missing extras/afters!

First attempt at 4:3 so good luck to me and good luck to anyone else fasting today - you're all fab X

BsshBossh · 18/10/2013 07:10

Morning, weigh-in Friday for me and 1.6 lbs down. That's just over 75 lbs down now and 9 lbs to go. NFD Friday today. Woohoo!

rubbishfamily333 · 18/10/2013 07:11

Cuckoo - after bf my boobs went really small and seemed empty. Since then I've put on loads of weight and they have got firmer.

I've noticed when I attempted the 30 ds that my boobs got firm really quickly. So I think press ups and chest flys (look on utube of your not sure how to do them) work wonders for boobs Grin

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 07:11

Oh and special good luck to Whimsical dh for his vasectomy today! Shock

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 07:31

Bsssh Yay ..celebration dance.... You are truly amazing and inspirational. Well done. I thought 1.6 lbs weigh day result was enough to celebrate, but 75 lbs!!! Shock Shock
Your pics are amazing but seeing that number too - truly Well done. You go girl! Have a lovely Nfd fri X

Rubbish - I had been avoiding the E word so far and fingers in ears to the JM 30ds but (sigh), I knew this day would come; so now to have boob saggage improvement directly connected to it, I obvs ignore at my appendages peril! (sigh) (grimace)
Looks like I'll be setting up the laptop then doesn't it!

Maybe I'll kick start my friday , first 4:3 hungover after 1 glass of wine, cold wet day with an intro to Jillian Michaels 30ds!

Obviously I hate myself! And don't go giving me any of that positive - she's amazing, you're doing it to love yourself crap, people! I want to hate it, then gush like a mad woman a couple of wks in, like a proper convert! Grin

MissStrawberry · 18/10/2013 07:58

Will read properly later but wanted to say well done to TIP for the MN SS nomination. Fabulous news!!

Weigh in a day early but thought why not as I did 2 fasts pretty well.

5.10.13 - 11 stone 5lbs (all time best since trying to lose weight).
12.10.13 - 11 stone 8lbs (after 2 cooked breakfasts, 1 three course meal and two rubbish fasts).
18.10.13 - 11 stone 5.2lbs (I'll take that!!)

Spamfrit · 18/10/2013 08:10

Weigh in day and feeling dejected. 3rd week of plateau. I have honestly been good sticking to no more than 600 cal on FD and 3 days of sub TDEE (by about 10%) and a little more lax at the weekend. exercising 3 times a week running 5k and a few weights. Done mfp so pretty confident I'm adding up correctly.

BF is the same so unlikely to have lost any inches either! I know other people out there have had plateau's. How did you keep your motivation up? I'm not giving up I just feel my will power deserves a little reward now and again?

eatriskier · 18/10/2013 08:42
  1. 375 lb away from 10st now. 2.375 lb away from target. Though I remembered I actually wanted to go about 3 lower than that to allow for bounce around. Grin

Watching BBC brekkie and realised I haven't been offered a seat on public transport for ages. Obviously I no longer look pregnant Wink

The kids and I are having a pj day today. No plans and it's horrible out so why not?

Good luck today Mr whim

rubbish I hula anticlockwise for 10m and can pretty much keep the hoop up for the entire time. I am trying to hoop clockwise now too, so do 5m that way but theres a lot of picking the hoop up in that time. I do this 3 times a week. I've lost about 2 inches from both my waist and hips in the time I've been doing it (about a month). May not seem that great but my pattern of loss in those areas has been stall then drop, stall then drop. Hula means I'm losing at nearly every measuring session.

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 09:16

Right! Here I go 30 ds!
Have heard you all raving about it so just hope I can stick it out as it obvs working for a lot of you.

Spam I am dreading hitting first plateau as I know that will be the real test of willpower. Sounds like you are doing fantastically with exercise so no doubt it's the crossover of fat to muscle. I'm sure you'll get some fab advice from the experienced ones and I'll be relying on you to pass that on when my day comes! Good luck and keep that PMA going!

sweetiepie1979 · 18/10/2013 09:27

Hi all your stories weigh ins and weight loss is fantastic. The motivation you all have is inspirational I love reading your posts it's really great to hear that even when you have a bad say or weigh in that you stayso positive. I wwant to join you but I've got to give birth First and sort breastfeeding etc. I've put a lot of weight on in this pregnancy so trying to think now about how I cab tackle it. I have questions
Which is the best book to buy on the 5.2?
How much can. You expect to lose a week on the 5.2
What's an average days eating on a fast day? Do you
begin the night before after dinner, sleep, fast then following day not eat to lunch?
Thank you appreciate any advice

lucyintheskywithdinos · 18/10/2013 09:50

missS we're exactly the same weight! And I share your food ishoos history too. What is your target?

Quick poll - I'm sick, don't really feel like eating, but getting through today with the DDs would be easier if I eat. FD was planned. Do I fast or not?
