Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Brilliant SV ripping and NSV ali

Will end today a little over but considering the last two weeks Thursday has either not worked or turned into a mini fast I'm not going to kick myself over 100 calories (and the cookie dough needed eating, it was for its own good Grin)

Have my own NSV here - I'm now in 10s all over. Got a couple of pairs of jeans (still tight at mo as we now know to be best!) and a couple of jumper dresses. One is a gorgeous Jane Norman number, and they're not known for being generous. I looked down at myself and saw lumps and bumps, but DH was salivating and made me look in the long mirror. Head me and mirror me are still having trouble getting used to each other but mirror me didn't have many lumps or bumps at all. One very happy lady here.

wrigglebum · 10/10/2013 17:22

Thank you for the new thread.

FD today- just had a lunch of pickled egg, couple of slices of chorizo, celery and cherry tomatoes. Dinner is roast chicken with sweet potato wedges and Nando's sauce, yum.

Did just have a lick of the chocolate brownie mixture though, it was too nice not to.

somewherebecomingrain · 10/10/2013 17:23

Have had 2-3 milk coffees - 150 - and a costa cap - 200 odd. And a couple of mouthfuls of dry baby formula milk (I know I know I'm wierded out myself!) - 45 ish.

Realised that's 400 cals so going to power through without my dal. That's the plan anyway.

And tomorrow NO CAKE. Fruit, fruit and Greek yoghurt. And savoury.

Preciousdaisybear · 10/10/2013 17:40

Hi again. Day has gone kinda tits up. Problems with work about the amount of time I have to take off for SN DS2s appointments. Trying to stick to fd but just want to crawl under duvet, howl and eat cake. [Sad]

BsshBossh · 10/10/2013 17:42

Body fat calculator
If anyone is interested in their body fat percentage, as calulated by the US military, then this calculator is excellent and though obviously not as accurate as a proper scan, will give you an idea and a figure to work towards. I found it very sobering that though I reached normal BMI late April my body fat levels were still obese (33%). Today my body fat level is "acceptable" (28%). Still work to do but I'm happy.

fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy

BsshBossh · 10/10/2013 17:48

Body fat ranges according to above calculator:
Essential Fat: 10%-13%
Athletic: 14%-20%
Fit: 21%-24%
Acceptable: 25%-31%
Obese: 32% +

So my next goal is to reach lower range of "acceptable".

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/10/2013 17:57

Good lord Bssh that made for grim reading.

I have a loooong way to go.

Bramblesinforrin · 10/10/2013 18:31

Fast day here - off to Italy for a week soon and getting ahead of the game if I can!
Nsv, had got back into my usual 12. Was buying a lbd for Italy and found the one I wanted in a sale - only a ten left and it fitted! (Whether it will after a week of carbs and wine, who knows?!)
Hope all other fasters are going well.

Lovely new thread :)

I am struggling to eat up to my tdee at the moment (how lovely it is to be full after three low calorie meals). Today, I haven't even reached 1000 but I haven't felt at all hungry and I ate what I wanted to eat. My attitude to food has completely changed thanks to this WOE. Think I'll hit tdee tomorrow (having quiche for lunch - 450 calories a slice) setting me up for fd on saturday.

wrigglebum · 10/10/2013 19:21

My body fat is showing as 27%, so a bit lower than my scales say. So only acceptable even though my BMI is 21.5. Working on losing the fat now and getting more toned.

BetsyBell · 10/10/2013 19:31

Mine says 25 which I sadly know is not the case having had a DEXA scan a while back. I've lost weight yes but my %age body fat was really high before and relative to the amount I've lost I still clock in at over 30% fat. So I'd love to believe your link Bssh, I look a lot healthier with that calculation!

OP posts:
eatriskier · 10/10/2013 19:34

Mine says 23, and fit. That may not be too far off, I only really noticeably have fat in one place now (tummy) and its shrinking all the time.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 10/10/2013 19:34

Scary! Tried that calculator and my fat weighs almost as much as the rest of me Blush 43%

BsshBossh · 10/10/2013 19:56

Betsy, a DEXA scan is definitely on my wishlist.

BetsyBell · 10/10/2013 20:09

Bssh I wish I could have another one! Would make for a brilliant before and after...

It was part of a research study - see if there's any likely sounding medical research in your area you can get involved in to get a freebie!.

SchrodingersFanny · 10/10/2013 20:09

We have fat measuring scales. I am down to 30% from 34 when starting this wol.

I've had a bad NFD. It started well with couch to 5k run at 6am. Cake after picnic lunch. And then sweets and chocolate. I've eaten a whole bag of chocolate coins. I have my period at the moment and always crave chocolate. Feel like a failure.

BetsyBell · 10/10/2013 20:15

The professional fat measuring scales where I had the DEXA scan were wrong by more than 10% so they're not remotely accurate! However, I would imagine that they're a useful guide for showing relative changes.

Shrodingers Don't be hard on yourself - most people on here complain of excessive desire to eat sugar and chocolate during their TOTM so maybe give the fast a miss at those times? Your 5k at 6am is most impressive so be proud of that achievement.

My new favourite fast day supper ....
Waitrose Love Life Cuban Pork soup / stew : whole pot under 350 calories, yummy, filling, healthy

BsshBossh · 10/10/2013 20:28

TIP that soup sounds like a lush NFD lunch too! Will pop into Waitrose tomorrow.

FD completed. Weigh in tomorrow morning but TOM has started so am not holding my breath. On a brighter note: Three NFDs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I fancy cake!

Neeko · 10/10/2013 20:49

Found you all Smile. Thanks for the new thread. ThanksThanks

Another successful FD here. NSV here as I wore a pair of size ten trousers to work today. I haven't worn them since before DD1 was born - and she's 7 GrinGrin
I've actually been lighter than this by a couple of lbs since I had her but this is the thinnest I've been. This woe definitely makes for a flatter tummy.
I found that fat calculator really interesting. I'm just into the acceptable range but going down Smile.

Had M&S Cajun chicken breast for dinner tonight. Only 180cals and delicious with some ratatouille.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 10/10/2013 20:57

Marking place on new thread. Thanks Betsy

trying out a 24 hour fast now as I failed FD today. At work I was offered a cookie and like a fool I said yes, then I had a bad lunch of Parmo (chicken topped with Beschmal sauce and cheese) sandwich. Ive not eaten since then and plan to go until lunch tomorrow. Im not hungry ATM and about to go to bed so its going to plan so far.

somewherebecomingrain · 10/10/2013 21:02

bramblesinforrin and neeko great NSVs.

bsssh interesting fat calculator. I think it's got to be over optimistic - it gave me 28% but I'm still overweight bmi-wise.

Or is that all the muscle making me overweight?

So another fast day winds down. It's been interesting, I've tried much harder to drink water (TiP tip). Also gave dd her first bottle of formula - she got through 35ml, about a 6th of a feed.

So have had nothing but milky coffee, 8 cherry tomatoes, my sons crusts dipped in baked bean sauce and a crumb of cheese.

Just didn't feel like having a meal. Think I've come in at under 500 for the first time ever.

Not sure whether these things are linked. Is it just getting easier cause I've kept at it?

Big challenge is to not have a blow out day tomorrow. Mentally preparing myself. When I ate a whole cake on Tuesday I didn't even really want it.

Well done to all fasters today and good luck to tomorrow's fasters.

Three nfds ahead! That does not mean I can eat excessively!
