Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

That's my problem Melanie I have lots of junk food in the kitchen!

lucyintheskywithdinos · 17/10/2013 17:06

I had a gingerbread latte with my lunch after all your talk of pumpkin spice eatriskier it was amazing!

Jollof rice for tea, followed by lemon and spice cake. Yum!

BsshBossh · 17/10/2013 17:15

TiP update pic comes when I'm at ultimate goal (not long to go now). And eight now I have prominent collarbones Grin.

BsshBossh · 17/10/2013 17:15

*right now

BsshBossh · 17/10/2013 17:18

Oh, so actually I am (as I always thought) large framed. My goal is still BMI 21 though cause of the "Indian factor". Also, perhaps I just have large wrists as the rest of me looks "small or medium frame".

MissStrawberry · 17/10/2013 17:29

I have breast fed 3 babies and my boobs are about a GG/H and not at all saggy. No change at all really since losing the weight other than being smaller of course so don't be too defeatist cuckoo. Think of all the fun having bra shopping though not in M&S of course.

MissStrawberry · 17/10/2013 17:32

25.9 Sad
Can't remember what I started on and current weight is 2lbs heavier than my lowest since starting 52.

southeastdweller · 17/10/2013 18:34

Nearly 40lbs down and I'm feeling the cold a bit more than what I did before but I don't mind the cold much as it gives me even more reasons to crank up the heating and cosy up in coffee shops. I actually don't like hot weather at all. Then again, it's only October and I'll be in York on a mini-break in January (a 5:2 anniversary treat) so maybe I'll feel differently then Halloween Wink

GatoradeMeBitch · 17/10/2013 18:55

I went with it - ate a large bag of Maltesers and two packets of crisps. Oops. Will try and fit another fast day in next week.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/10/2013 19:35

NFD with a bad cold, so I did 19:5 to avoid too much comfort eating - my bod was yelling for chocolate, so I was in peril. Well, it was a Big Choc 5 hours, but not a Frenzy, meaning I ate 60g choc plus choc rice pud, but didn't nip out and buy choc ice cream, choc cookies, choc donuts and choc muffins. I'm an equal opportunity chocaholic; I take it in any form Grin.

Big Choc cure worked rapidly. I feel better and managed an hour in the gym at 50% normal intensity. I find weightlifting helps a cold, cardio makes it worse.

I feel well enough to FD as planned tomorrow. Anyone else FDing then ?

somewherebecomingrain · 17/10/2013 19:36

Gatorade it's ok to slip up I sure have.

mrsf lovely to hear about your NSV.

Re the wrist/frame debate I know I have small wrists and ankles. I have a gap between thumb and forefinger though. This is because I have small hands. I'm not convinced by this method.

Fd for me while looking after two dcs cause of the teacher strike.

I'm sure I've gone over. 4 or 5 milky coffees, half an apple, four rice cakes, a miso, and cheese crumbs and cake lickings.

Anyway going to drink water loads before bed.

Well done everybody.

pinkclouds333 · 17/10/2013 19:48

Hello everyone... have finally come out of the shadows and decided to post. Have been doing 5 2 for just over a year and have gone from 13 st 5 to 12 stone. I would like to be 9.5 stone eventually. What's really interesting is that although I am still 12 stone I have a constant stream of people telling me how much weight I've lost and how slim I'm looking. I think it definitely changes your shape and levels of body fat. The other interesting thing is that on my FDs, I am always in such a good mood (almost elated) so I also believe it affects brain chemicals. Also need to add that on FDs I don't eat anything until 5.00pm and usually go to about 700 cals (which is why my weight loss has been slower). I will do this for rest of life I think. Sorry for veery long message!!

BigChocFrenzy · 17/10/2013 19:57

mrsf congratulations on your NSV Biscuit

Re wrist / frame: muscle must surely count too. My finger overlaps my thumbnail, so I have a small frame. However, I've a lot of muscle from intensive weight-lifting. At BMI 20 I would be emaciated. I'm currently BMI 23, with visible but fuzzy stomach muscles, so my aim is to return to BMI 21.5 which I consider my optimum weight. (I must control the Choc Frenzy !)

BigChocFrenzy · 17/10/2013 20:01

Hi pink. Well done on the weight loss.

rubbishfamily333 · 17/10/2013 20:10

eatrisker - OMG I just saw your profile pictures... That is amazing. Are you saying that in 5 and a half you have lost all that weight?

Tell me exactly how you have done it and I will try my best to do the same (smile)

BigChocFrenzy · 17/10/2013 20:20

tip Congrats on the nomination. Well-earned with your expertise.

Question for you: do you know of any studies comparing 24 / 36 FDs ?
Both as 2 FDs per week and also comparing 3 x FD24 to 2 x FD 36.
I think most of us here do FD36, but some folk have say an early lunch one day, then fast 24 hrs to a later lunch. the idea being to have 1 large meal on each day.

Being a scientist, I am incurably inquisitive about how things work Grin

SchrodingersFanny · 17/10/2013 20:21

Hi guys! NFD here, but went to ikea and had meatballs and chips.

I've maintained again this week, or maybe lost half a pound. I'm a bit gutted. I'm running again, every other day. Did 2.2miles tonight, 11 main mile!

However I have had a few NSVs this week. Two people have commented on my weigh loss and yesterday I put some work trousers on that I haven't worn for a few weeks and they fell down!

So this maintaining. Any suggestions. I stick well within my TDEE.

eatriskier · 17/10/2013 20:22

Very successful mini fast under my belt. Am downing some water to see if tips water thing works. Though I would normally drink a fair bit of water before bed anyway so may not be much different. Second instalment of tandoori chicken and onion bhajis have gone down a treat and all the spice is keeping me nice and warm.

rubbish I think I'm just a freak and this woe suits me. I've done 5:2 all the way, without dipping much less than 100 below TDEE on an NFD. Have tried to eat as healthily as possible for me. Didn't eat for the sake of it, but made sure I wasn't feeling deprived. Didn't really give up booze either but made sure it was within TDEE. As I lost weight my body healed and I have built more and more exercise in which is helping with toning and also allows my TDEE to be a little higher than it would be if I were still sedentary. I've also started becoming more mindful of the booze more recently, limiting myself to 3 days a week where I'm allowed to drink. Exercising on fast day mornings has done wonders for toning me up, as well as hula hooping.

MissStrawberry · 17/10/2013 20:23

I'm in shock.

Had a snack as so hungry, had a decent dinner with the kids. Still come in at 349.

BsshBossh · 17/10/2013 20:31

Water drinking before bed Those of you who do it, do you pee more at night? I'm thinking of trying TiP's suggestion tonight of downing loads of water on an FD night - a pint? More? But am nervous about waking family (we live in a creaky old house) by going to the loo all night.

Anyway, successful FD over. The easiest in weeks because I was at my mum's and she lives in a very cosy, warm new-build. Weigh-in tomorrow morning (still nervous about weigh-ins despite having been on this weightloss thing for well over a year!) and three NFDs whoop (where I can go over my TDEE if I want on all three days cause I've undereaten my TDEE on the weekdays - hurrah!).

BsshBossh · 17/10/2013 20:35

Any Asian fasters out there (Far East, Southeast Asia, Indian sub-continent) please bear this article in mind (and search out TiP's earlier link to a WHO report): we need to aim for lower BMIs cf our western counterparts:
t.nbcnews.com/health/whats-actually-behind-low-asian-american-obesity-rate-8C11323110

BigChocFrenzy · 17/10/2013 20:47

Bssh What about drinking loads all day, but just a few sips in the last 2 hrs before bed, then a big drink as soon as you wake up next day ?
I have learnt not to drink a glass before bed even after a normal intake, or I wake up to pee, can't get back to sleep, then keep getting up.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/10/2013 20:52

fanny Maybe you are losing inches of fat (hence trousers & compliments) while gaining muscle from exercise. Which would be healthy.

Preciousdaisybear · 17/10/2013 21:17

FD here and like you gator got big time munchies. Drinking water in the hope of staving it off. Can't have any more coffee - had about 6 cups today and not sure how if I will ever sleep again Grin

rubbishfamily333 · 17/10/2013 21:24

eatrisker you have done so well.

How often do you hula hoop? And for how long? I have a weighted hula hoop but havn't used it much, but I do really enjoy it.
