Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Gosh, there's been a lot of activity on here the last few days!

STS this week. Well, it's not surprising since there's been a lot of celebrations and family get togethers over the last week or so. Only got 3lbs till target, it feels tantalisingly close but so far a way too.

NotAsTired · 18/10/2013 09:54

lucy I say eat up, but healthy nutritious stuff so you have energy to give to DDs.

MissStrawberry · 18/10/2013 09:55

Good luck with the baby sweetiepie. I was massive at full term with DS2. 14 stone. Lost 2 stone 5 by the time he was 2 months old but spent the last how ever long about 3 stone overweight. DS2 is now 8 Hmm.

I have tried many ways to lose weight and sort out my food issues and 5:2 has been the best. Not just because I have lost almost a stone since August but because I am no longer in battle with food, no longer scared of feeling hungry, no longer feel crap if I eat something I don't exactly need (though that is happening rarely) and no longer eating because the clock says I should or because I am bored.

Coveredinweetabix · 18/10/2013 09:57

Bssh - those lamb meatballs sound delicious. Could you post the recipe?

JD & BigChoc - I'm going to congratulate you on your restraint. Yes, you indulged but I bet it wasn't as much as you would have done before this WOE. JD - I don't blame you for being demoralised. I saw DP go through a similar process a couple of times last year and each one was just so draining.

Cuckoo - good luck with the Shred. I found day one OK but day two really HURT. My boobs are looking a lot perkier and I think that that is partly down to 5:2. I feel as though the muscles across the top of my boobs toned up and that hauled my boobs up a bit.

Has anyone tried doing a FD with a hangover? I hardly ever drink and so having a second glass of wine last night has left me feeling a little fragile this morning. I really want orange juice but know that that is going to wake up the hunger monkeys so am trying to avoid it.

For those of you who have lost pounds and pounds, as you have dropped down the dress sizes, has it been tempting to eat more on NFDs? Having done (bits of) the Shred in August, done this since September and, I think, my body woken up to the fact its neither bf or pregnant for almost the first time in close to five years and so that tyre of fat around my waist just deflating, I can wear clothes I haven't worn for years. Yesterday, I even wore leggings (with a very long tunic) BUT I'm not even a healthy BMI yet so whilst I feel as though I look great its all relative and I've still got a long way to go. I think what I'm trying to say is that a bit of me is happy with this small result and so I want to make sure I don't sabotage further weight loss by falling off the 5:2 WOE wagon.

MissStrawberry · 18/10/2013 09:59

lucy I am not sure what my target is. I have looked on line but still can't remember what a healthy weight for my height is. Before I got pregnant with DC1 I was 10 stone 2lbs and it would feel amazing to do that but considering how slim (ha) I feel now compared to what I was that feels positively skinny Shock. I would like to know what would be a good weight and see where that gets me. I can only dream of 9 stone something (aged 21 was 9 stone 3lbs) but tbh I never thought I would get to 11 something so ten something would be fabulous.

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 10:09

30 day shred abandoned! As soon as got to press ups the dog went nuts and kept trying to eat my face - very off putting! Can't lock him out of room as he's a spoilt brat am home alone and he'll create merry hell.

Will attempt again tmw or mon. On plus side it gives me a chance to work on my pelvic floor, as the jumping jacks clearly pointed out I need to! Hmm

lucyintheskywithdinos · 18/10/2013 10:16

missS we have similar targets too then! I'm aiming for 10stone, at my skinniest ever I was 9, but I don't think that is realistic now as I was 17 then!

JacJenkins · 18/10/2013 10:28

Wow, can't believe how popular the 5:2 Diet has become.. been on it for a few months. Lost a couple of pounds here and there but always seem to struggle with what to eat on the fast days.

I came across this bit.ly/18zjgsb and it has helped me a little. Are there any other resources you can think of that shows what I can eat without going over my calorie limit?

#help :)

sweetiepie1979 · 18/10/2013 10:32

Ok Miss strawberry thank you for that, you've done fab

BetsyBell · 18/10/2013 10:33

EPIC POST ALERT! so unlike me Hmm

Sweetie Love your attitude! Already thinking ahead. Just make sure to give yourself good recovery time and take care of yourself Thanks Cake and big kisses to you.

In answer to your questions:
-Haven't read any books. Watched the horizon online last month for first time. Between that and here, I think it's all covered. Imo.
-I believe average to be 1lb. Though more you have to lose, quicker it tends to come off. Think fair to say majority of peeps lose more than 1lb wk at the very start too. After first 3 fd I'd lost 5lbs.
-Average days eating very diff for everyone. Mine tends to be coff, green tea, red bush until 2pm ish then cup soup/bouillion, followed by 1 lrg meal 8p.m ish. This usually works for me, loads of veg/salad and lean protein for meal is key.
-I stop eating by 10p.m on my nfd then I do the above for my fd. Go to bed fd planning every mouthful of food for next day, and always wake up not hungry! Can then usually go until at least 2pm before eating, which puts me at 36hr fast. I find the 16:8 very easy to slip into naturally once a few fd under belt.

There are so many tips on here that just make sense once you're doing it. Like avoiding eating til late as poss because it kick starts the munchies; drinking lots of water when hunger pangs start etc.

Best of luck to you and baby, and looking forward to sharing your experiences in 6 wks ish time! XX

BetsyBell · 18/10/2013 10:42

JacJenkins MFP is very useful for tracking/looking up calorie counts. The BBC recipes bit has a whole section of 500 calorie or less meals. Generally though what you're after is a big load of salad leaves and or veg with a chuck of lean protein (eg, a couple of eggs, lean chicken, salmon fillet).

Avoid carbs on a fast day, they rarely satisfy and leave you hungrier!

There's a recipe thread in the OP.

Meal soup pots from the supermarket are very useful if you don't want to cook - generally around 200calories a pot and very satisfying.

Eat riskier. I want to ask you about hoola hooping. I bought a hoop in the summer (the weighted cheapo Davina one).

I want to work on my waist (final remaining bit of flab).

However it turn out I suck at hooping. After two weeks I still couldn't keep the hoop up for 30 seconds.

What's the magic trick?? If I could keep the hoop up for a minute or two it would probably work really well for me and the DC have mini hoops and a willing to join in the fun. Tia.

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 10:51

Sorry! Just been catching up!

Lucyinthe I agree with Strawb make it a possible unofficial fast/semi fast day. Do what you need to tget through day but be mindful about what it is and whether you really want it. Tally up at end of day and call it what it deserves then!

CIB Currently fding with a hangover Grin Only one glass of red as well! Pathetic!
Used to be a big wine glugger but cut right back to almost non existent in spring due to being a bit 'mental' and it not helping! Lost huge bloat then and half stone. Now I do mindful drinking Grin and will be very mindful tmw when I polish off the rest of bottle with strictly and my good pals Ben and Jerry. But such a lightweight now!

So far today no probs with fd and I am sure that is helped by feeling a bit rough as my stomach feels really sugary. If anything I crave salt when hungover - so cup of bouillion would sort that out.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2013 10:53

Cuckoo Glad someone else is doing Friday FD, misery loves company ! No, really I don't mind fast days.

How are you feeling so far ? I was planning sub-100 FD and medium intensity fasted training today, but I'll see if my cold demands the 500 cals and an early night. Whatever, not even 1 square choc on FDs for me, or it would become a BigChoc day. Just tea & cocoa so far.

Best wishes to any other Friday FDers.

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 11:01

Hi BigChoc we must've crossed over. I am ok as above ^ so far. Do want to get some fully skimmed milk though to try a big milky drink later. Would love to do a liquid only day, and if it wasn't a fri I would prob feel braver to attempt today. As I am sure you will have this bit of info at forefront of your chocolate drenched brain, just how many cals are in a tsp of cocoa?? The kitchen is a long way away next door Grin

... oh and YEAH! We're gonna smash this fd BigChoc!!

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2013 11:05

cuckoo I don't have much urge for anything on FDs (other than for it to end).
For savoury, I pour out 100ml veg juice from a cartoon, so fixed calorie count < 20. I sip this at need during the day
For sweet, low fat cocoa with a splash of unsweetened almond mild is 40.
Usually don't need food then.
PS I drink about 1 glass wine every 3 months (and never smoked) so my only relevant vice is in my username, but Frenzy can be massive !.

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 11:05

.. oh and CoveredInWee (snigger) you too - the 3 C's are ON IT for a friday fast! YEAH!!! (in best Jillian voice)

JacJenkins · 18/10/2013 11:08

Thanks BetsyBell.

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 11:08

Sorry that doesn't even make sense! Would be 3 C's if you could possibly drop the 'Big' please, BigChoc!

Am obv still rat arsed on my 1 glass!

Who said further up post that fasting gives you a high. I def feel like I'm on something this week!

... and it's free. And cal free!!! Grin Grin Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2013 11:09

CoveredInWee Wonderful name !

cuckoo We crossed again. I buy organic defatted cocoa, which has v low calorie count, from health food shop. Check the label and weigh your spoonful but mine comes to 25 cal and my splash almond milk brings it up to 40.

Herbal tea with Stevia is sooo soothing and near-zero cal.

cuckoo13 · 18/10/2013 11:26

Ooh thanks BCF - am usually ok without sugar in herbal. If I want something sweet I drink Redbush as I find that soothing. I am however, very interested to hear about 'defatted' cocoa! I have also yet to try anything but cows milk, but have been meaning to for a while.

You have inspired me to find some DFC and to experiment now with diff milks. I feel that with winter just starting big mugs of cocoa/milky coffee will be much appreciated, not to mention filling on a fd.

Coveredinweetabix · 18/10/2013 11:28

I'd never thought of that abbreviation! That would certainly have been an appropriate name when DS was tiny as he peed all over me at every nappy change. And as soon as he got in the bath. I learned to have him facing away from DD as he got her in the face a couple of times! Coveredinsick would also have been appropriate as he had reflux.

BsshBossh · 18/10/2013 11:47

For those of you who have lost pounds and pounds, as you have dropped down the dress sizes, has it been tempting to eat more on NFDs? Not really Coveredinweetabix. I mean, yes I do overeat on some NFDs as I absolutely love food and eating Grin but: 1) I adjust my TDEE each time I lose 5lbs so I'm always aware of my daily/weekly intake 2) I take a weekly view of calories - if I overeat one day, I adjust the next 3) my appetite has naturally shrunk.

The lamb meatballs are a Claudia Roden recipe from her book Arabesque, but it's also online:
marmadukescarlet.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/claudia-rodens-daoud-basha-lamb.html
I add a few tablespoons of pomegranate molasses and serve it with Turkish flat bread but we've had it with brown Basmati too. Around 530 calories a serving (without the rice or bread).

BsshBossh · 18/10/2013 11:48

Forgot to say, Good luck Friday fasters!
