Sorry to the ongoing couch to 5k thread but I am looking for others just starting out (and it looks like there might be quite a few of us on popsycal's thread).

So...anyone starting week 1 this week?

OP posts:
Rollergirl1 · 21/01/2010 21:14

Sorry, this is bupa one

MmeLindt · 21/01/2010 21:17

I use the bupa one because it was the first one that I came across and I have entered it into the iPhone app.

They are pretty similar.

I think that by about the 5th run I was really seeing a difference, today was the 6th run and it felt much easier.

CJCregg · 21/01/2010 22:01

Thanks for clarifying. Will stick to the Robert podcasts, as I like the fact that he gives you the timings.

Rest day tomorrow

By the way, llareggub, I think your name is pretty cool. But if I had to choose another West Wing name, I'd probably be Abby Bartlet.

golemmings · 21/01/2010 22:33

I've just done my 4th run this week (tried W3R1). Made a couple of minor errors - including somehow managing to time the runs for the steeper sections of thr route (or maybe it just felt like that) and also trying to cover the course that I used to be able to run in 35 minutes last year. I got to the end of the final run on the podcast and I was still heading south, uphill, with the village disappearing into the darkness over my right shoulder. I ran through the last run and the cool down (ooh - go me, 8 minutes running - but most of it was down hill) and then did another couple of minutes running in the vilage too.

Its still not quite the 2km run that I need to be able to dso to complete this race on Sunday though...

Was going to paddle tomorrow but the canal still appears to be solid so I'll be running again. Its so much more convenient than paddling - (it doesn't involve a half hour drive to get to my boat) and its moderately safer to do solo.

schiaparellipink · 22/01/2010 10:42

did my second run of the week last night but ended up with a rotten stitch in my right side that kind of ruined it a bit 3/4 of the way through - any tips on how to avoid? and what are you supposed to do, run through the pain or stop and walk (as I did)!

catchingzeds · 22/01/2010 20:57

A rest day today but actually want to get out there but figured the rest days are planned for a reason.

I found my route means I'm running uphill and walking down Managed it so far so will try and stick with it.

I get a stitch if I've had too much water/tea before going out and I have to allow at least 2.5 hrs after food too. I ran through my stitch when I could and walked it out when too bad.

If anyone needs a shove to get out there Twink has posted on the original thread, it's an inspiring read.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 22/01/2010 22:54

Hello and well done to everyone, and thanks wuglet for the virutal kick up the arse.

I'm gonna download Robert doo dah, is he free?

I know losing weight isn't really the point of all of this running, but I weighed myself this morning and have lost 2lbs this week.

YAYYYYYYY

I think this is mainly to do with having a week of major life stress which has literally given me the Shits. But, hey ho, every cloud etc etc.

I'm starting week 2 today, so will get a run in this pm/evening. I found the first week really tough going - even to run for a minute at a time was hard so am looking forward to getting to the end of this week and starting to feel the runs get easier a la Mme Lindt.

BananaGio · 23/01/2010 09:37

Hi everyone can I join in? Started this week after years (decades really) of doing no exercise and am horrified by how unfit I am! Don't know quite how I expected any different though as I do nothing! Doing Bupa plan - did 3 runs and think it was marginally easier by the end of the week. Want to do 5k Race for the Cure in May but saying that out loud terrifies me since at the moment a 1 min jog knackers me!

HerMomminess · 23/01/2010 09:47

Managed to hit treadmill y'day eve. Total 3.5k's W/R attempt in just over 30min. Legs a bit tired but defo noticing improvement.

Have a confession- just been doing my own version of R/W. Can' t pay for yet another fitness regime.

And if I can shift some weight that would be magic!

HerMomminess · 23/01/2010 15:47

Oh fck. Got soaked. And not by rain! Pelvic floor is well and truely fcked. And of course on the day I decide to go outside in vaguely daylight hours.

Sorry.

Needed to get that of my chest.

Pointless.

llareggub · 23/01/2010 16:33

Oh no, hermominess, that sounds terrible! But I bet no one noticed.

I've just come back from my day 3 run. I've had 2 rest days and today had to up the game to run 1 minute and walk for 1. It is probably just my fitness levels but I think the walking/running combo means I could go on for much longer than a gentle jog. I think I put a bit more effort into the run section.

But blimey, it was hard work tonight. The time between 13-19 minutes seemed to last forever. I'm hoping the next run is easier! I've booked into the gym for a session on the treadmill in case the rain prevents me going outside. I know people run in the rain but that is a step too far for me!

Rollergirl1 · 23/01/2010 20:24

I ran again this morning, my fourth run. I don't think I have ever had so much exercise in one week. I have done the following:

Saturday (last): 1st walk/run
Monday: 2nd walk/run
Tuesday: Swim
Thursday: 3rd walk/run
Friday: Swim
Satutday: 4th walk/run

I am feeling pretty damn pleased with myself. So much that i'm just about to order chinese and not feel any guilt!

MmeLindt · 23/01/2010 20:56

HerMomminess
My sympathies, sounds really distressing. Hope that you got home without anyone seeing you.

I second the suggestion to go and read Tink's post about her husband on the MacMillan thread.

Any newbies just joined, do have a look there and see if you would like to sign up for that, 5k (or more) sponsored run on 27/28th March for Macmillan charity.

Today was my rest day and I really had to force myself not to go running. DH could not believe it. I have also lost weight, about 2kg.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 23/01/2010 22:34

Well done mmelindt. 2kgs is fab.

I've just returned from my run - I downloaded the paid version of runkeeper and did their (easy) workout, 8 x 1min run + 1min 30 sec walking intervals.

I found it so much easier than trying to run/walk on my own - without the prompts iyswim. I managed it really well and feel thoroughly pleased with myself too Rollergirl.

In fact I'm looking forward already to my next run so I totally know where you're coming from MmeLindt.

Kayzr · 24/01/2010 11:15

Owww!! Went for my first run today. I'm using the Robert Ullrey podcasts.

My shins really really hurt while I was running.

Please tell me it gets easier from here.

I'm signing up for the race for life in June. So I want to be better at running as I'd like to do the 10k one.

CJCregg · 24/01/2010 22:54

Hi all, sounds as if everyone's doing really well! Wish I could lose some weight - all this running seems to make me hungrier, and of course I tell myself I've earned it ...

Went for my 3rd run yesterday. It was lovely - I was in London so went to Primrose Hill. This did unfortunately entail some running uphill but I managed it and it was worth it for the view.

So that's Week 1 achieved, and I feel ridiculously pleased with myself.

Starting Week 2 tomorrow

ClaudiaSchiffer · 25/01/2010 11:06

Well done CJ, keep it up. As for weight loss it's only week 1 luv, give it a bit of time.

Rest day today, and I've just had the worlds biggest glass of wine (it's 9.30pm here in oz) so don't really reeely feel like going out tomorrow.

Will read Wuglets kick up the arse speech in the morning and see if that helps get me motivated.

HairyMaclary · 25/01/2010 11:29

CJ we must be at the same point, I've just done my first week 2 run - oh my goodness, I thought I was going to die for the last 30 secs of the first 90 second run! However after that it seemed to get easier to keep up the running for 90 seconds, I needed to 2 mins walking time to recover though!
I'm quite pleased with myself as it was raining when I set out and I still went! I only have 2 hours free before I have to collect DS2 from nursery and I was considering putting it off. It was quite nice running in the rain though!
Mme Linndt - 2kgs sounds good, I seem to be eating more!

jamaisjedors · 25/01/2010 11:36

Hello again,
I finally did my first run yesterday with the Robert Ullrey podcasts.

I didn't think I was v. unfit and I'm not trying to lose any weight, but my legs are definitely achy today.

Will try and go out on Tuesday. do you think I can run round the garden with my toddler?

CJCregg · 25/01/2010 12:15

Claudia - I know it's only a week, but I am the queen of instant gratification (shameless use of Burns emoticon)

Hi Hairy! Well done - I've just done my first Week 2 run as well. It was cold and rainy and I so didn't feel like it. And those extra 30 seconds nearly killed me. But thank the good Lord it was only 6 of them instead of 8 ...

Oh goody, rest day tomorrow!

Kayzr · 25/01/2010 12:42

Rest day today and tomorrow for me as I'm working. But will be out Wednesday and Friday. I'll be starting week 2 on Sunday.

MmeLindt · 25/01/2010 17:10

Did week 3 day 1 today, 3 mins run/walk alternately.

I made the mistake of running too long the first time (programmed the iPhone wrong) and felt really good while doing the first bit. Probably about 6 minutes. Then by the end I was knackered. Managed to finish anyway but my legs are a bit sore and my knees hurt.

llareggub · 25/01/2010 18:13

I started week 2 today, which is running 2 and walking 2. I didn't think I'd be able to do it but actually found that running for a bit longer helped me get into my stride a bit. I actually found it easier, or perhaps I'm getting fitter! I also think that perhaps this running lark is a bit addictive.

I also like posting here afterwards; I feel we are all in it together although I must say Mme Lindt you just make me want chocolate. I bet a lot of people say that?

wuglet · 25/01/2010 20:11

I still can't run
My knee is OK to walk on but tried a gentle jog in the house and my legs just crumpled.

It is definitely a lot better then it was - not painful at all whilst not using it and hardly anything on even longish walks.

Hoping if I give it until next week I can restart.

OP posts:
ClaudiaSchiffer · 25/01/2010 21:29

Sorry to hear that Wuglet, have you been swimming? Walking is good though isn't it. Can you do regular walks rather than jogs until it heals?

I've just returned from my 2nd run of wk 2. 2w 2r for 6 intervals I found it fairly hard to do some of the running, but in my defence I chose a really hilly route.

I did 4. something ks in 40 minutes so my average rate is over 9 mins a kilometer, so my aim is to increase my running time and get my rate down to under 9 mins a kilometer.

I did the same as you though Mme Lindt - did about 6 or 7 mins slow running to start with and knackered myself.
