just to house the runners

It would seem that I have agreed to do the Great North Run and to raise at least £250!!

I have to estimate my time.....

I am going to post a link to a race time predictpr that I have found. Would those of you with experience of running longer distance have a play around for me and see if it is reliable? I.e. if you put your 10k time in and it predicts your half marathon time, is it fairly accurate?

popsycal · 20/07/2009 19:35

race time predictor

popsycal · 20/07/2009 19:35

Oh, and I went out today and ran 7 miles in just under 70 minutes (2 seconds under but hey - still under)

popsycal · 20/07/2009 19:38

oooh i like this race bangle thingy

Wallace · 20/07/2009 19:40

Pops - when I put my 10k time in it is only 5 mins too fast for half-marathon. When I put my 5k time in it is about 20mins too fast!

But I have far more experience and training over the shorther distances so would expect my times over those distances to be comparably better IYSWIM

Not doing much running at the moment as I have a slighlty dodgy hamstring which is okay for a short jog but not much else.

Also I have a rotten cold and sore throat.

popsycal · 20/07/2009 19:44

hope you are feeling better soon

I too thought the predictions seemed a little fast
I would be happy with 2.5 hours rather than the scary 2:07 it predicts from my 10k time

peachsmuggler · 20/07/2009 19:53

popsy - yeah it predicted my half as about 10 mins too fast. It really depends though as some people seem to be able to increase their mileage without dropping their speed too much. I am not one of them . I think they normally ask for your predicted time so they can give you the right colour of number to start in the right spot but don't worry, as you build your distance you will get a better idea of what tiem you'll do it in and you can always move up the field at the start. No one is going to chuck you out of the green start cos you are wearing a white number IYSWIM.

Well done morethan! It just shows how quickly you can build it up eh?

racmac · 20/07/2009 19:56

I really like the idea of the nike sports thing that goes on your ipod - tells you distance etc etc

BUT i dont have an ipod! Any similar products out there that are any good?

Popsy - well done - go for it! Im not that brave yet

popsycal · 20/07/2009 20:01

I luuuurrrrve my nike sport whatsit
it makes you slightly obsessive though, if you are that way inclined to begin with

racmac · 20/07/2009 20:31

yes i would be obsessive - no slightly about it
but dont really want to have to go buy an ipod just for that

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 20/07/2009 23:04

I have a question about the Nike sport thingy. Do you need to take your iPod with you when you run or can the sensor talk to it when you get back? I generally run with my shuffle and don't really want to take my touch with me. Or does it work with a nano ( am slightly concerned I may have more iPods than strictly necessary ).

Am in awe of the times people do. Did my rfl yesterday in just under 36 min. Was a bit slower than I hoped but had forgotten that the course has hills and it is totally flat round here. Am considering a 10k in the autumn - not sure if this may be mad though...

Wallace · 21/07/2009 06:43

Well done

The nike plus thing does workwith a nano. You can also buy a nike plus wrist band so you don't need an ipod

feetheart · 21/07/2009 06:55

I think I might sneak in here. Have graduated from the Couch potato-5k and ran the RfL a few weeks ago at just under 30 mins which was about what I wanted (not many hills on ours Rita )
Am also thinking of stepping up to 10k though will probably be aiming for Christmas rather than the autumn as I'm not sure how running and the summer holidays will work out.

Can anyone recommend some sort of route planner/distance calculator, preferably a simple one please!

Twink · 21/07/2009 08:04

Popsy, my times work the other way around, ie when I put my 10k PB into it, my predicted time for a half was 2 mins slower than my last actual time - seems like I don't push myself hard enough on the short stuff!

Managed to get out for a 6 miler and an 8 miler last week, furthest I've been able to run in weeks but will hopefully make tonight's running club. I've not been able to go for the last 6 weeks cos dd & I have been on a kayaking course.

Need the head space at the moment, Mr T is deteriorating scarily fast. Off to the hospital soon but I suspect I'll have to start a new thread for advice later

hatwoman · 21/07/2009 09:19

that predictor thing was a bit quick for me too - I put in a half marathon race time and it predicted my marathon time at about 15 mins faster than it was.

hope you enjoy the GNR - it looks fabulous - when is it?

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 21/07/2009 09:35

Twink I'm sorry to hear about your DH .

I used the running predictor using my 5k time for 10k and the time was very long indeed. Maybe it is trying to tell me something

OrmIrian · 21/07/2009 10:26

masterandmarg - whereabouts are you in Somerset? Isn't the weather lovely ?

OrmIrian · 21/07/2009 10:27

twink - I am so sorry.

peachsmuggler · 21/07/2009 11:56

Really sorry to hear that Twink feet - try goodrunguide.co.uk it's pretty easy to use!

hatwoman · 21/07/2009 12:45

twink - sorry I didn't see that about dh. thinking about you.

sfxmum · 21/07/2009 15:14

Themasterandmargaritas · 21/07/2009 17:28

Twink, I am so so sorry Wishing you and the family much strength.

Orm, buggery blasted rain, how can I be a tourismo in this kind of weather? We are in Crewkerne, where are you?

All this talk of Nike + made me go and buy a pair of Nike trainers today from the Nike factory shop in Street! They feel soooooo light. The house we have rented has a treadmill so I just had to buy some new running shorts and top just so I can test out the treadmill tonight.

Popsy that is very exciting! The predictor was about right for me, perhaps 5 mins too fast...

Wallace · 21/07/2009 19:36

Hugs Twink xx

popsycal · 21/07/2009 20:42

Twink - just re-read your post - thinking of you xx

TutTutter · 22/07/2009 15:55

hello

can i join?

started running in march after a few years of pottering (have dsses aged 4 and 2)

am currently running 3x a week on average, total maybe 25-28k. longest run so far 13k

have done one 10k race (49:42) and have registered for another, plus the womens 8k in windsor

am thinking - just thinking - of stepping up to a half-marathon but am unsure. 13k to 21k seems like a big jump. and although i'm kind of vaguely tempted to sign up for the local one (oct) i hear it's quite hilly

anyone any words of wisdom about making the move from 10k to half-marathon?

(thanks fran for pointing me to the thread)
