Bugger!

Have hurt my foot again. Feels exactly like it did last year when I broke my metatarsal. Shit. And it's almost exactly a year since I last did it. I am going to leave it a few days before I go and see anyone. I don't want a bloody plaster on for 10 weeks again

Sorry for the whinge.

twink - so glad MrT is looking up

fishie · 02/08/2009 20:12

i do hope foot is ok orm - how much are you doing every week?

i've scaled back on distance and up on frequency which seems to suit me a lot better, the end result is more miles and faster times.

peachsmuggler · 02/08/2009 20:46

Well done twink for staying positive, you sound like an amazing person

popsy - I knew I needed new shoes when I started getting sore hips. they were cured instantly!

I did 6 miles this morning. First running since giving blood on Thursday and felt kinda sluggish but not too bad.

Going to do intervals tomorrow

OrmIrian · 03/08/2009 09:21

Before we went away I was doing one run of around 10 miles and 2 of about 4/5 miles a week. I know it would be a good idea to do what you are doing but I can't find the time to run more often. Of course this week when I'm stil on leave it would be easy but I've hurt my foot

Glad you are improving your times though.

Themasterandmargaritas · 04/08/2009 22:40

Sorry about the foot Orm, little solace that the weather is just so rubbish, I've only been out twice since being here. Thank goodness I am going back home on Thursday

Fishie, I am confused about the tying loop things, run it past me again [idiot emoticon]

I have new shoes, they are great, however my arches ache slightly at the beginning of a run, like the shoes are tied too tight, is this normal until I break the shoes in a bit?

Twink, you are an inspiration. So glad to hear there is some positive news for you all.

OrmIrian · 05/08/2009 21:34

Ah you answered my question master. I'm in Bridgwater. Not too far. Weather has been shite without a doubt

Themasterandmargaritas · 05/08/2009 22:25

A stone's throw away. Does it drive you mad that there is not an e in Bridgwater? Everytime I see it on a sign it irks me. Silly, I know. How's the foot?

19fran76 · 05/08/2009 22:33

Commiserations on the foot Orm.

Add a touch of groin strain (? ) to the injuries list. Think I may have acquired it lugging my DD about in her carrier but it nagged me all the way round last nights run.

Oh & another thing (whilst I'm enjoying a whinge), it's too darn hilly this side of town (I've moved). I'm going to hide from my times until I've got this new territory licked.

Master, I had that sensation early on with my last pair of shoes for the first couple of weeks. Don't know if that is usual but they've been great 'til now (reached mileage expiry methinks). I'm joining the replacement queue with Popsy.

MrsWednesday · 06/08/2009 13:37

I'm still injured - sore hip that despite physio is not getting any better. It's so frustrating, I can feel my fitness slipping away and my body is getting more wobbly day by day. I miss the discipline of running regularly too.

Much love to you Twink, glad to hear Mr T is rallying. I hope you and your family get plenty more good times together.x

popsycal · 06/08/2009 19:32

Thinking of you and Dh, Twink.

I have been doing some rubbish running. Feel like I am getting slower.

My long runs are lengthing nicely - most recently an 8.2 mile run at 10:18 min/mile pace in hot weather. It is the 'tempo' runs that I am suuposed to be doing .

Today was meant to be a 40 minute tempo run (I am still dubious about these but I will come back to this). I have only done 2 other attempts at tempo running before this session. I made a playlist on my ipod and planned to change tempo with each song - around 4 ish minutes per song. I started out with a 5 minute jog at around 9:30 mins/mile. Then ran between 8:20 and 8:40 mins/mile for the next song. Then back down to between 9:20 and 9:50; then faster again etc. However, after about 25 minutes of running I had to concede that my 'faster' sections were not really much faster than my standard running pace. So I did 5K instead and came home.

Not sure whether I am running too fast in the tempo bits to sustain over any length of time....

Also moshimoshi - I know you run with a buggy. I am about to sell my hideious travel system and have a little stroller that I will be using. I have never thoguth of running with ds3 til now. Was thinkign whilst running today that once ds2 starts school in September, it will be just me and ds3 for 3 days a week and we could do some lovely running . SO! Wherre do I start to look? Would I get a second hand bargain anywhere?

peachsmuggler · 07/08/2009 09:20

Oh dear, lots of injuries it seems. I have lost my mojo a bit too with running. Seems to happen when I am not doing specific training for a race, but have sworn off racing so will have to get motivated another way.

popsy - Have you used this www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?uan=1676 (sorry still haven't learned how to do links)

It uses a recent time you have run and tells you what pace to use for each type of run.

sfxmum · 07/08/2009 16:38

hello all

sorry about all the injuries

seems like the summer never really materialised anyway have been plodding along ok and really noticed when I went for over a week without running a mile
still hoping to go for some 10k race next month or early October
but am also thinking I might try to get pregnant again just a last chance thing over the next few months, quite unlikely to be successful but hey who knows

happy running

popsycal · 07/08/2009 18:47

peachsmulggler - thanks for that link - I am aiming way way too fast !!!! Makes me feel a little beter

sfxmum tried to casually drop in the TTC bit - good luck

fishie · 09/08/2009 20:54

m&m i knew i'd explained it badly. look for the extra hole slightly round corner of row of holes, make a loop from top hole to that and thread through it from opposite side. gah this is a bad explanation too.

twink i am thinking of you all, hope you are enjoying the summer.

MoshiMoshi · 09/08/2009 22:58

popsy - look into which buggy you think you'd like then check places like eBay for second hand ones or kiddicare etc for cheapest prices of new ones. When I ran with just one I had a Baby Jogger which was fabulous (lightweight, manouverable with fixed front aluminium wheel, well all three were alumninium and 18", and fast while being comfy for 6 month plus baby). But with two or more I ended up selling the BJ and piling them into the Phil'n'Teds which has plastic 12" wheels with a front wheel that can lock if you want it too. The chassis is obviously not as good for running (not a single construct and rattles a bit) and it is much heavier but it has been fine for training runs and in a funny way good in strengthening my arms as it is harder work to push! Everyone is different and you ought to check height and weight etc before buying. I have coveted a Bob Ironman Duallie for ages but they aren't distributed here and so if you import it you can't check it out first which is why I haven't done it. Living in London my PnT does the job and can get around shops easily so I will probably stick with it. I do have a Baby Jogger Switchback Hybrid which is a trailer/stroller but it is v heavy for running and bulky so has been used mainly with the bike. Any idea what you might want?

Themasterandmargaritas · 11/08/2009 10:50

Good luck sfxmum.

Fishie that's much clearer now

Disaster of all disasters here, I am home now with all my new stuff and gadgets but my knee just won't play ball. I did 5k yesterday and it hurt at the end, so today, perhaps rather stupidly I tried my 10k route and had to walk from 7k to home as it was sooooo painful. What do I do? I even had a support on it. If I can't run I shall get really depressed.....

morethanyoubargainfor · 11/08/2009 16:07

hello everybody,

I feel all inferior on here but want to share with everyone anyway. since shools have broken up i have find it quite difficult to keep up with the running but have been trying to get out as much as possible, and yesterday i finally managed to run my first mile ever . thats one day shy of 8 weeks since i did my first ever run the plan i was following said i would be running a mile within 8 weeks but i never believed it. I gave up with the plan after about 3 weeks as ifound the running walking ratio too much and followed advice from sfxmum, and did what felt comfortable. Thanks SFXMUM.

sfxmum · 12/08/2009 10:18

moethan making me feel all warm insidenow you just have to be better than me (not hard) and it will be done

thanks for good wishes we shall see bit of a long shot

hope all are well I have been plodding along as usual

master the only knee pain I have had was the iliotibial band syndrome and I followed the advice here of ice elevation rest; stretches and exercises to strenghten quads

Go team morethan & sfxmum. Don't feel inferior morethan because it's always a pleasure reading about others variety of experiences & progress made

Sorry to hear you may be joining us on the resting up bench
Master. I am itching to be out running but am erring very much on the side of caution for a few more days at least after reading how not respecting time out may lead to very minor injuries turning into a chronic nuisance.

Hello everyone else! Happy running to those who are, quick recovery for the rest of us

OrmIrian · 14/08/2009 12:16

Not running. Foot hurts

hatwoman · 14/08/2009 12:24

hi everyone, sorry to hear there are so many injuries. morethan - well done for sticking to it and geeting to a mile. you'll be clocking up 2 or 3 before you know it.

I went for a lovely 9-miler the other evening - up on one of the edges near where I live. very slow but enjoyable. (except forthe 50p sized blood blister on my heel due to my shoes falling apart after less than 3 months wear). I've also been trying to up the amount of hills I do. I'd like to be able to improve my times where we get to the summer fell race season next year. I've done 5 races now - there are a couple more in late august/september that I might do. and I'm contemplating going for something longer next year. Not yet sure if I dare but am thinking of this or if I'm really bravethis

fishie · 14/08/2009 20:58

moondog are you there? i am off to llyn (lleyn?) for a week tomorrow and will pack running stuff in spirit of optimism - have not been before.

but if it is a choice between roads with no pavements or getting lost i will read books instead. a nice mindless 7k would suit me fine. also i am used to flat grassland / woods so a mountain might actually kill me.

hatwoman · 15/08/2009 15:16

oh give it a go fishie. you're right it may well do you some serious damage but it's great. get a map and/or walking book and find a simple short route on a footpath. check it out on google earth first as well if you're really worried about getting lost.

popsycal · 15/08/2009 17:05

just back from a fab week in a quiet corner of south west lakes
no running at all - no roads that I felt safe on!!!#

So back to GNR training in earnest with a long slow run tomorrow

peachsmuggler · 16/08/2009 18:33

Even though it is hot in the afternoons am finding it is a bit cooler in the morning. Did a nice 7 miles this morning and it was pretty enjoyable and had energy to sort of sprint the last bit, which leads me to believe I am not suited to run in the hot weather so am ready to embrace autumn running, though not autumn itself just yet!
