Twink, so sorry that things are so tough for you. I'm afraid I must have missed what is happening to your poor DH but it all sounds so stressful .

TutTutter, welcome. No advice on half marathons having never got beyond 10k myself but I'm sure someone else will have some good advice.

popsycal · 22/07/2009 18:34

Tuttutter - i am doing similar

popsycal · 22/07/2009 19:59

Am needing some running attire advice. I like to wear three-quarter length running leggings. However, since upping my distance and frequency of runs, I think I need some non-thrush-inducing new leggings....any suggestions for more non-thrush-inducing leggings?

popsycal · 22/07/2009 20:00

Buggger - the crossing out did not work. But you get the picture....

popsycal · 22/07/2009 20:01

I want this t shirt

Dangerous - I got paid today....

TutTutter · 22/07/2009 20:39

love the t-shirt

do you really think running tights could cause thrush? i did have a bout a couple of weeks ago, and am not normally prone...

Wallace · 22/07/2009 20:40

I like the t-shirt

popsycal - could it be the knickers rather than the leggings that are the problem?

Tutter - no you can't join. You are ridiculously fast

Take a look at the BUPA running programmes

popsycal · 22/07/2009 20:51

I am not normally prone, but have suffered in the last month since buying running tights and upping my mileage/running frequency so I am assuming it is that. Nothing else has changed. Always wear 100% cotton knickers

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/07/2009 21:17

Ah I came here to do a link for Tutter but see that she's already here

And also to check on your dh Twink - I'm sorry things are going downbank. We are dealing with similar with dh's dad at the moment.

Thinking of you x

hatwoman · 22/07/2009 22:14

the best t-shirt I saw was doing the marathon. this guy had a t-shirt that said, on the back:

SLOW

but infront.

Themasterandmargaritas · 22/07/2009 22:26

Now I want one too...

Tutter, if you can run 10k that fast, then a half should be a doddle!

fishie · 22/07/2009 22:27

sorry to hear that twink.

popsy you are such a gadget junkie!

i potter on. that kasabian fire song is very good for a quick burst of interval training.

hatwoman · 24/07/2009 23:01

evening ladies. I did my 5th fell race last night. really enjoyed it - I think I'm beginning to get the hang of going downhill - felt a lot more relaxed and, I think, therefore faster. I was pleased with my (unofficial) time - roughly equivalent to 10 min miles which, for me, on a fell course is good. waiting for the official results to see where I came.

I have a question for you. Do your toe-nails suffer for your sport? Mine have never recovered from the marathon - and really, they're just a mess. I've spent all evening tonight trying to disguise the fact that I have blobs of hard skin and unfile-able crooked thick 'orrible nails by blobbing dark red varnish on them (actually quite effective). But I'd actually like there to be something a bit more nail-like under the varnish. my big toes are the only ones thet are ok. anyone else have this and/or top tips to avoid it?

peachsmuggler · 25/07/2009 08:38

Ooh dear hatwoman, that sounds rubbish. I haven't had any toenail problems so can't help I'm afraid. Do you wear normal running shoes for fell racing?

Does anyone else not wear a watch when doing long runs? I am trying to do long runs at fairly slow pace but halfway through I get annoyed at the slowness and speed up to get in at a certain time and I think I enjoy it less because of it. Am doing 11 miles this morning and going to try it without the watch and just chill out. We'll see.

sfxmum · 25/07/2009 13:23

Hi all

hatwoman congrats on fell run the thought of going downhill make my shins hurt
regarding toes what I find is that I really have to keep the nails quite short, not great for summer but worth it with running, that and moisturising feet at least once a day including nails is the only thing I can think of and proper socks of course
but then again I don't run long distance

have not been out for over a week but tomorrow will start my proper 10K training let's see if I can do a half by Christmas

happy running gorgeous day here today

Hello Everyone,

It's been a while as I've been away, moved house, had a nasty cold. In that order. Think I could be ready to do some running again .

Twink, sorry to read the latest news.

Tut, glad you found us.

Had a quick read to see what I've missed: There has been a lot of good work goin' on round here .

Popsycal, I love the t-shirt. Have you bought it yet?

Mmmm....thrush & skanky toenails. Ladies, you are making sport..s..s...sexy.

I salute you all.

peachsmuggler · 30/07/2009 19:11

tee hee fran - Welcome back.

Went really good run last night. Hilly but fun.

Not running again till weekend as gave blood today. Going to eat ice cream instead. Hoo-flipping-ray!

Wallace · 30/07/2009 19:16

Still rotten fluey cold here (and I suspect my hamstring is still dodgy but haven't one anything to put it to the test...)

popsycal · 30/07/2009 20:55

I have been away for almost a week - only meant to stay two nights but didn't want to come back!

Anyway
My GNr training is going well (od - can't believe I am dong it!)

Did a 40 minute tempo run, an 8 mile run, a 40 min recovery run and another 40 min tempo run (all as per BUPa plan) while I was away. And I now officially hate hills! It was pretty impossible to run without some hills where we were!

Also, my ipod charge only lasted the first 2 runs (but got my longest run to date on ) so I had to be creative in calculating the intervals for my 2nd tempo run. Didn't occur to me to use the timer on my phone. Oh no! I decided to time the intervals by reciting, repeatedly, 'The King's Breakfast' by A A Milne to myself (it is the longest poem I know by heart) - 3 times for a fast burst and 4 times for a slow burst!

I am not sure about the value of these tempo runs right now but will persist

popsycal · 30/07/2009 20:57

I also have a question about running shoes. I suspect that I am ready to buy some new ones.......

How do you know when?

moondog · 30/07/2009 21:03

I'd lost track of this thread.
I'm finding it hard to run as in Dhaka [Bangladseh] over summer but actually it is coming [on hols so have time to go to the gym each day-running outside would not be advisable! Benefit of humdity is that when I get home to UK, running is then so damned easy.

Good songs to run to:

Dancing with myself Billy Idol
Rock Lobster B52s
I've been thining about you London Boys
La Vie en Rose Grace Jones [all her stuff good for hypnotic stage]
Chuck Berry and rock 'n roll
Sunshine on a rainy day Zoe
Sun is shining Bob Marley
Higher Ground Stevie Wonder

I've got Wired for sound by Cliff too. I love it!

Twink · 30/07/2009 21:35

Thanks so much for all the messages, even though you're 'virtual' friends, it really helps me through the grotty times. After last week when the medics & I thought Mr T was heading out, he's pulled himself up by his bootstraps, had a couple of syringe drivers fitted so his meds are being absorbed and he's avoided the threatened rehydration at our local hospice - at this rate he'll be back on his treadmill (sadly probably not but we're on the half full glass over here!)

I've managed two 6 milers this week so far plus a few gym sessions, took Mini Twink climbing on Dartmoor at the weekend AND have entered our local sprint triathlon at the end of August - amazing what a bit of positive news can do!

Popsycal, I find I start to get odd aches and pains when my trainers are worn out, I got a couple of blisters last night which I suspect means I need a shopping trip as normally even running in the heavy rain like we had doesn't cause problems.

Hatwoman, I'm seriously tempted to try a fell race after reading your reports, they sound fab. I think my nearest are on the Isle of Wight so I must investigate further.

MoshiMoshi · 31/07/2009 08:54

Twink - just popping in to send your virtual hugs (v un-MN I know) and let you know I have been thinking of your family. Wishing Mr Twink my very best wishes.

fishie · 31/07/2009 09:38

hey twink glad to hear things are not so bad.

hatwoman i have narrow ankles and find my feet slip and toes bang into end of shoe, wsa terrible. until woman in running shop showed me how to tie them, you thread them normally but then make loops in the top two holes, put laces through and tie as usual, means they are held on more firmly round the ankle. or you could ask in your runnign shop if they have any other lacing tips.

sfxmum · 31/07/2009 16:29

just quick post

Twink I am so sorry but glad to see mrT bouncing back for more nice times wishing you all some happy times
x

hope to fit in a longer run this weekend for me that means something between 4 to 6 miles, we shall see

happy running all
