@BezMills that sounds incredibly frustrating and I hope work becomes less nuts!

BezMills · 29/01/2026 08:38

@WearyAuldWumman I love that retort, and the hearing all about your gym wins.

I was planning to get to the wee local gym today but I have poorly DD on a sickie from school, so no can do! On the upside I had 10 hours of sleep last night, rated by my watch as 'excellent' quality too. And my 'body battery' is at 100%.

Al cento per cento!

Last trip to the crossfits is still planned for tomorrow, work permitting. I'm not going to take no for an answer at this point!

Sometimes it do be like that, and an unplanned week off isn't the end of the world.

I've gone premium on MyFitnessPal again, to track my macros. Inspired by a really great FB Page "Hungry Healthy Happy" I'm going to get my fibre up a bit and make sure I get plenty of protein. The woman there shares loads of recipes, very recommend.

I have a few kilos I'd like to lose, ngl, which I'm sure will help in the gymnastics, but I think that will happen incidentally as I improve my diet a bit, and I promise not to go on about it.

Happleandhorange · 29/01/2026 08:43

Oh well done everyone. We are all brilliant.
Car is back. However due to cost of repair I may not be able to afford to fill it with petrol for a few days. So gym will need to be carefully aligned with other errands.

Happleandhorange · 29/01/2026 08:49

My plan for today is just to stretch a bit before bed, plus the dog walk. Consistency, even if not very much.

FurForksSake · 29/01/2026 20:17

Howdy! Hope we’ve all had good days.

hydro was cancelled but I managed to do 17 minutes in the exercise bike and not fall down the stairs and then 15 minutes or physio and Pilates exercises. Feel pretty pleased with that.

Alittlefrustrated · 29/01/2026 21:15

Yesterday - 55 mins pilates class
Qigong class
19/300
Today - my 1st swim of 2026 - 42 x25m breaststroke
20/300
Slipped behind a bit as I've been under the weather, but feeling great that I've made it back to the pool,as I've had a bit of a mental block on that score.
Got niece's dog tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a decent walk in.

WearyAuldWumman · 29/01/2026 21:46

4 km brisk walking. (Did I mention that not running is bugging me?)

Neck exercises from the physio done at home.

Happleandhorange · 30/01/2026 12:09

Totally lost count of my numbers, will have to read back and work it out sometime. But today I made it to gym, yay!
Very lowkey workout as was hot. But felt so good to be back.

BezMills · 30/01/2026 13:37

I finally got to the Crossfits today, yay. But it was mixed emotions as the final one for a good while.
Started with Clean and Jerk, which is one of the more complicated Olympic lifts. I must say part of me was thinking "yeah great to learn this today, but I'm not going to touch it again for at least 3 months so..."
The workout was very Crossfits Typical. Wall walks, skipping, dumbell from floor to overhead. 50s each, 10s to change over, then go round the loop 4 times. It was pretty good actually, and a nice one to close the book on.
I'm not exactly sure what the plan is now, but I think it starts with getting a weights routine going at the Wee Local Gym and I can build up from there.

WearyAuldWumman · 30/01/2026 15:40

Unlucky 13.

Car park was very busy - some event on.

Went to the section overlooking the artificial pitches. Sensors weren't picking up kerb, so nosed in very slowly, judging distance from cars either side of me. Eejit.

Heard scraping underneath. Stopped. Reversed. Scrape again.

Don't see anything visible, but I've not looked under the car with a torch and I'm fretting.

The cars on either side were actually over the kerb, but they're bigger cars and had reversed in. Mine's a Golf. Kick me now. Hoping for the best. Not seeing any drips, etc., but worrying. (I have an official diagnosis of OCD. The kind that makes you worry...)

Went to Active Life. HIIT walking on treadmill for warm up - 6 minutes, fastest point 6.2 kph.

Just did an upper body workout thereafter, all with 6kg weights.

Side raises - 3 sets of 5.

Biceps curls - 3 sets of 12.

Single low row - 3 sets of 10.

In between sets, did a farmer's walk with the weights.

Followed up with Senior Flex class. Mainly cardio and band work, but some seated upper body work, just 3.75 kg weights this time.

We were evidently not really out of breath, cos we were singing along to Hotel California and American Pie at one point.

Arms are currently tired sore. Ditto, thighs.

BezMills · 30/01/2026 16:01

Hopefully just the bottom of the plastic trim on the front @WearyAuldWumman

Alittlefrustrated · 30/01/2026 18:42

4.4 mile walk with dog - just local and wet - he'll be telling his mam he's been swizzed 😅
21/300
Hope your car's OK WearyAuldWumman.
I'm off to google farmers walk 🤔

stilldumdedumming · 30/01/2026 19:28

I’m a bit behind with the thread. I am just popping by to say I have
Wednesday yoga
Thursday Pilates and
today lower body resistance to log.
as well as cheeky walks and of course physio.
got massively down about my body’s current state. But we keep going!

FurForksSake · 30/01/2026 19:43

Physio session this morning, and I’ve done lots of my exercises since.

@stilldumdedumming sorry to hear you are feeling down. Feel free to offload.

Happleandhorange · 30/01/2026 19:50

Looking forward to hearing about weights routine @BezMills .
@stilldumdedumming I know that feeling and it sucks. Be gentle with yourself. Maybe have some cake.
@WearyAuldWumman !!! to car.

Happleandhorange · 30/01/2026 19:52

Today is Shabbat. I normally don't go to gym on Shabbat but due to financial issues I really need to save petrol. So will combine a visit today with dropping teens off.

stilldumdedumming · 30/01/2026 20:08

Thank @FurForksSake hmmm - it’s the same as so many. I was pretty fit once and always active. And over the last 10 years some mystery neuro thing has meant I can do less and less - but at the same time I’m trying to do more in case something makes it better (seeing as it’s a mystery - you never know): mostly I’m glad I’m halfway healthy. Sometimes it feels like crumbs from the table. Keep turning up is the thing.

FurForksSake · 30/01/2026 20:45

@stilldumdedumming that does sound frustrating. I’ve never been particularly fit or active due to a number of health conditions. Sometimes it gets me down as I feel like I’m only able to do enough to just about keep going. I’d love to climb a big hill or run a 5km but those just won’t happen for me. Basically, on some tiny way, I do understand. It’s very frustrating when it’s a mystery and you don’t know what might help or flare things.

As you say; showing up and doing what you can is the thing. That’s what I’m learning about myself. Ten minutes of some Pilates and physio is the best I can do, but that’s a million miles better than nothing.

im sorry things are getting progressively worse, I hope that things stabilise.

Comtesse · 18/01/2026 00:23

Still going - day 317!
Just thought I would share this article - the health impacts of even small increases of exercise levels can be profound. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2026/jan/13/five-minutes-exercise-30-minutes-less-sitting-millions-live-longer

@stilldumdedumming dunno if you saw this before - even a few minutes of exercise a day can have significant health benefits. Atomic Habits book is good on the cumulative impact of little things ……

@BezMills how come you’re stopping Crossfit for a bit, if it’s ok to ask?

Happleandhorange · 31/01/2026 04:05

Yes to everything @FurForksSake is saying. But it's hard to believe it's worth persisting when things are physically bad. Mystery sodding neuros are the worst, I am in that category myself so understand.

Today was great. I went to big city gym and did just enough to feel pleased with myself, but not enough to be completely worn out.
They seem to have a decent scooter and bike park so I may risk that in due course.

BezMills · 31/01/2026 07:22

@Comtesse just the commute is a bit excessive for the next 3 months. I already spend >4h driving for 3 classes a week. That will be 5-6h due to mad roadworks, for the next 3 months.

So, instead of putting more stress and time pressure on my work in order to continue, I'm just going to opt out and reassess when it's back to normal.

In the meantime I have that 8h a week and the £40(!) per week I was spending on the gym plus petrol, to do other things.

The local gym I can run or walk to is like £30 a month. The one that's a 35m bike ride away is £46 pm but includes swimming pool, classes and has monkey bars! I'm going to give the monkey bars a go today on a payg to see how the gym is.

stilldumdedumming · 31/01/2026 07:55

Thank you all - I think I will feel better when I can get back to the pool. I was lucky enough to swim every day as a child. We had membership to a cheap community pool. Sometimes we swam twice - and the genuine joy of putting on a wet cossie knowing you were going back in! Problem is I only use my top half to swim and so this has had a knock on effect.

I do think turning up and doing enough is still really brilliant.

Nedsatomicdustbin · 31/01/2026 08:29

I agree that doing something every day, even if really small, is the way forward.

I have a tendency to be all or nothing. I think it’s a legacy of growing up/ starting exercising in the late 80s/90s and thinking it’s not worth it unless you burn gazillions of calories and are stiff the next day.

I am really trying to accept that sometimes something more gentle like a walk or a swim is still worthwhile.

BezMills · 31/01/2026 09:36

Monkey bars completed! It's quite fun, brachiating like a monkey!

There are a bunch of other things there to make it Topp Contender of the Muggle Gyms, (Crossfit is Hogwarts, we decided) including a couple of heavy punchbags and plenty room to practice gymnastics on the bars. Even the commute isn't a deal breaker as the bike ride is just a long warmup and chill time combined.

FurForksSake · 31/01/2026 09:54

It really annoys me when people talk about exercise and equate it almost purely to calories burnt. My exercise bike sessions burn 80 calories. Negligible. But those calories aren’t the point at all.

Physio has suggested I do intervals on my exercise bike, so that’s my plan today.
