@WearyAuldWumman definitely deh be backwards in coming forrit when it comes to Balance. It's a mixture of things you already do (yoga and pilates) mainly, and the instructor should give you options. The end is usually a nice wee lie down aka corpse pose breathing / visualisation whatever

Give it a go next time you have a chance!

WearyAuldWumman · 09/12/2025 10:56

@BezMills Oh, thank you! Yes, that's encouraging. Will give it a go the next time I can get booked in.

No exercise for me today - orthotics review at the Vic. I'm foregoing the car, given the parking and weather warnings. Fingers crossed that the buses are all running. It wisnae like this until Stagecoach boucht up Alexander's buses!

FurForksSake · 09/12/2025 11:04

I’ve done my weights and physio exercises, I have an appointment with physio this afternoon.

Feeling a bit despondent about how little strength I have and how long I’m going to take to get any fitness back.

I’ve said to DH that we are going to go out for a walk every day over Christmas, I’ll take my walking poles and we’ll go places with even ground and paths. Usually over the Christmas hols I drag us all out for a good few miles every morning, blow away the cobwebs and stop us getting on top of each other.

We have a light trail this weekend and I’m going to use a wheelchair, I’m using crutches at the moment when I’m out and about but the trail and walking to the trail and walking around the house is just not doable.

i hope the orthotics review goes well! I did balance with LM fairly regularly a few years ago, it was a lovely clas.

Good luck on the bus! Last but one time I was on the bus from Glenrothes to the Vic I was entertained by overhearing some very interesting and ripe conversation from a pair of Caskieberrans

Happleandhorange · 09/12/2025 19:39

@FurForksSake you're doing everything right. Persistence not brilliance should be tje motto of this, group.

Good luck with bus chaos. I am going to get into pool in a moment, will be frrezing first thing but hopefully wake me up

stilldumdedumming · 09/12/2025 20:19

@FurForksSake it’s tough isn’t it. You know you have to keep going because what else are you going to do? But you don’t have to like it.

I had hard core core today, and a really hard Pilates class today. I am finding it hard to fit everything. I have had no time for cheesy walking!

Happleandhorange · 09/12/2025 20:50

I swam! It was actually not too cold, presumably because is so hot ATM. I only did about four minutes to see how my shoulder felt - conclusion, sore but in the good way.

Thank you both, physio was kind and reassuring. I just have to keep at it and then work out how to keep active for life, as he reminds me, it’s up to me! He can give exercises and advise but he can’t do them for me.

In the queue going, I was waylaid by a chap who was raging about going into Kirkcaldy to pick up a works van...Apparently, two of them are supposed to use it at the same time, but they have an informal arrangement to take the van time and time about, since their work never checks, but the other chap has phoned in sick and has logged him in.

I have no idea why he told me all this. I must have one of those faces...

I have lived in Fife for all of my natural (apart from my uni days) and even I had difficulty deciphering what he was saying. Maybe my hearing is going.

Alittlefrustrated · 10/12/2025 21:06

1 hr pilates.
116.

WearyAuldWumman · 10/12/2025 21:15

45 min Senior Flex class - mainly upper body with 2.5 kg weights. Some cardio, wall pushups and lunges.

45 min Active for Life - cardio, yoga ball, lower body - leg press, leg curls, leg extensions.

Happleandhorange · 11/12/2025 08:27

15000 steps at zoo, plus two short swims.
Still very hot here. Hope all well in winter north.

I missed out on Tuesday's Crossfit because my back was a bit tender, called in sick too. I find walking helps, so I walked round the shops and got some christmas shopping done.

Today I had the car, unusual for a Thursday, and it was a class I wanted to do. Overhead press, in which I think I might have PRd for 3 reps. Whatever it was, I felt good doing it.

The workout was very typical crossfit, TLDR I enjoyed it a lot.

Farmers carry with 20KG each hand, up and down a 15m track, for 90s. Then 90s on the Ski erg, then 90s rest. Four times. Usually I don't track reps in things like that (typical crossfit schenanigans might be to have you do 4 exercises on a loop and keep track of a running total for all of them at the same time). Yeah nah I cannot be ersed with that, I just work hard and call it good.

But today I actually counted the lengths. 9, 9, 10, 8 or 10 (I think 8 on the last one but might have been 10 - after diving in to the action replay in my mental vault, I'm calling it 10). And on the erg I got to 76 cal 20, 19, 17, 20. I'm well pleased with my performance, I was flagging a bit (ergs don't lie) but still had it for a grand finale.

WearyAuldWumman · 11/12/2025 18:38

45 minute Musical Theatre Fitness Class today. Couldn't keep up with it all, but it was fun.

I've noticed that - in spite of my patella alta and arthritis - I can now get my knees up higher in various classes. This pleases me greatly.

I lost some glass from the greenhouse courtesy of the strong winds the other day. I'd already had a panel from the roof blow out earlier this year and was hoping to wait for better weather before attempting to fix it. Ha! I've no doubt that the gap in the roof allowed the wind to blow out the gable end.

Anyway, after class, I got the painting ladder and managed to reposition and re-fix a lower roof pane and then replace and re-fix the pane which blew out and landed in a bush earlier this year.

I don't think that I could have done it before. My balance is better with the classes that I've been taking, I'm more flexible and a bit stronger. Using the springloaded clip thingies was still awkward, but I managed to press them in properly (as opposed to a previous attempt, which is probably why the lower one had slid down).

I still have the gable end to do, but I was (I admit) frightened of doing the roof and I'm so glad that I managed.

That's amazing!

I was telling the boss at the gym that I had to make a run yesterday (as I was running late and parked further away from the school). I just started running and got there in time. All those stoppy starty workouts have made a difference!

Isn't it wonderful when you realise that it's all paying off? I can now do a brisk walk from the town centre to South Parks/Rimbleton without collapsing in a heap. (The consultant said that I'm not allowed to run because of the knees...but I'm rather tempted to give it a try.)

Happleandhorange · 11/12/2025 22:11

That's so great. I am really enthused about how fit I am now that summer is here. Comparatively, of course. But still.

FurForksSake · 11/12/2025 22:13

Seeing the functional improvements is so gratifying! Thanks for sharing, it’s great to see the positive impact of exercise.

Happleandhorange · 12/12/2025 09:20

I went to art gallery today. Definitely noticed how much easier it was, getting up the hill.

BezMills · 12/12/2025 09:36

It's funny. I live with what feels like ever-present leg and arse DOMS from all the crossfitting but it's nice to notice a difference in capacity sometimes rather than just feeling tired and needing naps from the training! Felt great this morning when my DD was scooting really fast and I could keep up with her no problem. The workout yesterday didn't seem to kill my legs much at all, quite surprisingly.

Got crossfits today, my gymnastic grips have arrived. I'm not entirely sure what they're for (well obviously you use them during gymnastics to grip the bar) what I mean is I'm not sure what the benefit is.

Is it to help protect your hands from wear and tear, or do they amplify your grip strength, or help grip endurance, some or all of those, no clue! I feel like my grip is ok, definitely not the limiting factor at the moment, but let's see. Hopefully I'll get instruction and a wee shot of them after the workout. I'm super motivated to get on towards some of the big moves on the bar, hoping to have a good run at them first half of next year.

I always wear my Boxercise hoodie to the gym and on the school run (generally everywhere to be fair) to rep the brand. Saw one of the other dads this morning at drop off. He's talking the talk about coming back to training - the hoodie jogged his memory I think. Great success hoodie, well done!

Happleandhorange · 13/12/2025 08:20

Today we rebuilt the pool :-) and walked lots. I am thinking of putting gym membership on hold for a couple of weeks as I am so enjoying walking and seimming in this weather, also am away for a bit next week.

BadActingParsley · 13/12/2025 08:20

Just gone back to the gym after 5 weeks off due to holiday and The Flu. Taking it slowly….

BezMills · 13/12/2025 08:51

@BadActingParsley definitely the smart play to take it easy. Hopefully you'll feel the benefit of getting into the gym.

I asked about the grips but am none the wiser tbh. I think it's just a case of using them!

Crossfit was all about the clean & jerk. Definitely one I've put in the "meh, not now crossfits" column. Every workout is a good workout, even the meh ones!

Comtesse · 13/12/2025 12:04

I would love to do a musical theatre class like @WearyAuldWumman! Used to do tap when I was tiny and have had phases of going to classes as an adult too - I’m not very good but in my head it’s like Singing in Rain or Thoroughly Modern Millie….
