Accident in gym, pretty annoyed 😕

Bit of a rant, a few weeks ago at our local DL club, my husband suffered a dislocated shoulder. My daughter was having her gym induction and being shown how to use the treadmill, with the gym instructor on the other side. The man using the treadmill on the other side of her stepped off and took his water bottle with him so my husband went to step on his treadmill to be next to my daughter, only the complete twat left his treadmill on level 14!!! My husband basically flew off, spun round and landed smack down on his shoulder.

all of this in front on my 12 year old daughter. He somehow managed to hobble down the stairs, where they tried to call him an ambulance, only there was a 6 hour wait so I took him up instead. He was treated relatively quickly (3 hours) and had his shoulder reset and sent home with pain meds.

My hubby had a meeting with the manager to discuss a gesture for the incident and he’s offered…2 months free membership for my husband and 3 free PT sessions.

part of me is insulted by this, it’s something that should never have happened and quite a serious incident that happened in there club. Did the member who left the treadmill on have an induction telling him how to use the equipment correctly etc? Everyone who knows thinks it’s awful what’s happened and David Lloyd should be taking more accountability for what’s happened.

the other part of me thinks I should pipe down and this isn’t the USA where everyone’s dues everyone 😂 I have looked online and a no win no fee case could be between £2k-£48k so I kind of feel David Lloyd aren’t taking it that seriously ☹️ my hubbies going to have up pay for lots of physio now

I’m a clumsy sod and this is the sort of daft thing I would do. So I feel for him.

But I think that he should chalk it up to experience and decline DL’s generous offer. They were blameless, unless the equipment was faulty.

I hope your Dd wasn’t too upset.

watcherintherye · 27/06/2023 18:43

Why does everyone think it was still going? I didn’t read it like that at all. I assume it was off, but set at level 14, so that when the op’s dh started the treadmill up, it was at a much faster pace than he expected.

That aside, wouldn’t you normally check, and put it on the right speed for you, rather than just start it up without looking?

DemonicCaveMaggot · 27/06/2023 18:43

The US 'warning hot coffee' case brought up by a prior poster involved an elderly woman who spilled coffee that had been heated to such an unreasonable temperature that she suffered third degree burns on her inner thighs and genitals. She suffered a massive infection as a result requiring an extensive hospital stay.

The 'sue culture' in the US is driven by the high cost of healthcare. $400 for an ambulance to the hospital, $40,000 for a medivac helicoptor, $1000 for an ER visit if you are lucky or $200 a time for every doctor who comes into your exam room to say 'How are you? sounds good' and walks out again, $5000 a day for a hospital stay, $10,000 a day for ICU. It is horrible for people who don't have health insurance and they don't deserve to be sneered at.

Megifer · 27/06/2023 18:43

So the other guy left it on 14 and turned it off, DH stepped on and went flying? Tbf I thought treadmills reset to 0 when they are stopped?

Or, did your DH actually step on a treadmill hurtling along at 14? 🤣🤣🤣

ActDottie · 27/06/2023 18:44

I can’t help but think this is on your husband. How did he not notice the treadmill was still on? It’s pretty obvious! Also did he not have the wire attached to him? If he did this would’ve stopped the treadmill as soon as he fell?

onthefence23 · 27/06/2023 18:44

That's the amount they would pay if there was negligence on their part! Which I'm not sure there is here!

Denise82 · 27/06/2023 18:44

Definitely listen to the other part of you and "pipe down" and tell your husband he's an idiot who should look where he's putting his feet (most people do) and listen for whizzing treadmills 🙄 it's his own fault

to be honest i think you need to reword this for people as most of the yabu is based on if the treadmill was moving at the time, but i read it as treadmill was off but level 14 when turned back on

drpet49 · 27/06/2023 18:46

satellitesunshine · 27/06/2023 18:23

omg. if it was level 14 the treadmill would be whizzing away and wheezing ffs. your husband needs to get his hearing and sight checked

This! Level 14 is fast. I fail to see how your husband didn’t realise it was still running????

It would still take a bit to get back up to 14 from stationary

DogInATent · 27/06/2023 18:46

Did the member who left the treadmill on have an induction telling him how to use the equipment correctly etc?
Did your husband complete an induction before getting on a piece of equipment?
Did he check the equipment before getting on it in accordance with his induction?
Are you a grabby CF looking for a pay-out?

illiterato · 27/06/2023 18:46

it is completely possible to get off a treadmill going at level 14. You just jump onto the sides and walk backwards. Im assuming he got off to get water and didn’t want to waste time getting it back up to speed which was kind of stupid to be fair. If he’d turned it off it wouldn’t have started again at level 14 when a new person came along. You have to input the speed you want.

rooinspace · 27/06/2023 18:46

This has to be a reverse! I can’t see any way it’s the gym’s fault.

BillyNoM8s · 15/07/2023 17:27

Your husband sounds as incompetent as the person who left it on. A treadmill running at full speed is quite obvious Confused

I'd be too embarrassed to join that gym now if it were me Shock

How can DL be held accountable for someone leaving a machine on? Your husband was even there, watching the man leave with his water bottle... Confused

PrideNails · 15/07/2023 17:30

I also can't see how it's the gym's fault. How did your DH not noticed the treadmill was in on and at level 14?

Ivegotsunshineinabag · 15/07/2023 17:37

I’m thinking that the previous guy turned the machine off, walked away and the OP’s husband got on and was distracted when the machine got up to speed?
It was at a DL after all, they have a better class of machine there. Prob gets up to speed really quickly and quietly.

I agree with PP, DL is not liable for your dh being distracted. And the cost of a DL membership is high, so a couple of months free is a couple hundred pounds. Take it then quit.
Use the NHS for physio.

The next answer is to join the council gym, their machines are noisy and take ages to get up to speed. And if your dh does something similarly stupid you can put the money you’ve saved on membership to a private physio.

loobylou10 · 15/07/2023 17:38

@Mermaid27 you should be annoyed!! At your feckless husband

How did your husband not notice the treadmill was moving?

This ⬆️⬆️⬆️

How much compensation are you wanting?

Ollybob · 15/07/2023 17:44

I think some treadmills can be paused.
But they start off slow and also have a start button as well as a display saying paused!
Normally you would set the machine up then press start also.

itme · 15/07/2023 17:52

The gym staff have not been at all negligent here - you’ve got no case whatsoever. If the treadmill was still moving at level 14 then your husband is at fault for getting on to it as it’s really obvious when a treadmill is moving at that speed. If the previous user had paused it and it had started back up at level 14, I have never come across a treadmill that is capable of doing that without starting again relatively slowly and speeding up gradually so I can’t see how that could even have happened. Stop blaming the gym. This was an unfortunate accident caused by your husband not paying attention.

SoupDragon · 15/07/2023 17:54

They've offered you more than enough! Your DH was an idiot to stand on a treadmill he hadn't bothered to look at.

Whatiswrongwithm · 15/07/2023 17:56

I know it’s not AIBU but YABU just for using the phrase ‘hubby’.

Either way, it’s his fault for not seeing it was running combined with the other guy. DL has absolutely no obligation to have done anything. They didn’t have any fault in the situation at all.

I suggest you swap ‘hubby’ from your vocabulary with grabby.

doingthehokeykokey · 15/07/2023 17:56

That’s quite funny really. You’re husband is at fault.

I’ve fallen off a treadmill, but at least it wasn’t under a car as it might have been outside. Injury sustained to ego only
