Thanks Oubliette. Only 13k steps today, dh did one of the walks Grin

OublietteBravo · 30/09/2021 20:13

I forgot to post yesterday, but I did exercise: Ri30 L3D12 (30 min). Tonight I did 6W6P L2D15 (35 min). I think I’m going to struggle to get to 250 days this year..,

Thank you oubliette!

I'm starting the new thread with a 5km run plus a Caroline girvan lower abs workout.

Days exercised 203 (I think - got to check old thread)

Ps so why are chickens so easy to look after Roonetta? We have two cats and they are fairly easy I think.

SophieLion · 01/10/2021 07:31

Actually 205 days.

BogRollBOGOF · 01/10/2021 15:52

I'll stick my head in and wave. I've been on previous threads before but for some mysterious reason my desire to exercise was magically quenched a few days into new year.

I've mainly been a runner, but this year I've diversified and taken up open water swimming. I've got a lovely new tri suit so I can keep going as the temperatures drop.

I'm also cyvling a bit more. I'm a very rubbish cyclist, but one of my fitness classes is about 5k away with a more direct off-road route that puts bike and car to similar travel time.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 01/10/2021 16:05

Hello, BogRoll. Hopefully joining us in October will take the pressure off in the new year. Smile I love sea swimming but I've a shoulder issue that has meant I haven't been able to swim properly properly for a year. I love bobbing around in the sea though, especially in winter.

Today I cycled the school run (40 mins) much to the dog's disgust Grin had to take him for an hour long walk to make up for it and I'll probably get him out for half an hour again later.

roonetta · 01/10/2021 16:20

Thanks for the new thread Oubliette 😊. I think I will struggle to reach my target too.

Welcome BogRoll

Sophie - The chickens have a huge feeder which only needs filling once a month, and we only have to top up their water once a week and collect any eggs. They have an Iglu chicken house so only requirement is to pull out the tray and change the newspaper once a week. No letting them in and out 100 times a day or feeding them several times like I do with the cats. They also have no access to the house so no clearing up after them when they traipse mud in Grin

Rest day for me today but thought I would check in on the new thread.

roonetta · 02/10/2021 19:25

Just a 20 minute Girvan workout today

Days exercised 175

SophieLion · 04/10/2021 07:10

Hello Bogroll Smile

The chickens do sound easy Roonetta!

Took the weekend off and today epic day 3 lower body. Found it a bit boring and repetitive. It had lateral lunges too which I don't like!

Days exercised 206

BogRollBOGOF · 04/10/2021 15:35

Fri: 0.6mi open water swimming
Sat: parkrun 32 mins. These days DS comes with me most weeks.
Sun: gentle walk with friends, marshaling at junior parkrun
Mon: circuits class (kettle bells and boxing today)

My hip/ pelvis were whingy today. I had SPD in pregnancy/ postnatally 11 & 8 years ago, and it was one of those days that my body just wasn't interested in wider sideways movements.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 04/10/2021 20:16

Solidarity fistbump on the whingy pelvis, BogRoll. My dc are the same ages and I still have to very carefully manage my spd. Mine has been very unhappy in the last few days, actually; I need to get back to squatting and core work instead of just walking and running.

I had an unplanned two rest day weekend. And today was just walking. This dog is great, I did 12km over the course of the day! We have officially moved from "dog sitting" to fostering and ultimately adopting him. We didn't want to get the dcs' hopes up by saying we would take him from the start, but he's a brilliant fit for us Smile apart from the biological warfare farts

sar302 · 04/10/2021 20:34

Hello. I would love to join your thread!

I'm currently down and out with the cold from hell - coming downstairs felt like exercise today! But when well, im doing a mix of reformer Pilates, indoor cycling, swimming and kickboxing.

Nice to meet you all!

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 04/10/2021 20:49

Hello sar302 Smile

SophieLion · 05/10/2021 11:58

Hello sar302! Please do join us - the more, the merrier!!

Sorry to hear about the spd bogroll and MotherForkin. Thanks

And so great you've got a dog now MotherForkin!!! Congrats!!! (I'm a little envious - would love a dog).

Epic 3 day 18 arms and abs today. Just as well it was upper body because my legs and glutes are very sore from yesterday. Today's workout passed quickly but there was A LOT of tricep work so I was getting slower and slower and slower 😂

Days exercised 207

roonetta · 05/10/2021 12:43

Great mix of workouts Bogroll. Sorry about the niggly hips Sad

What lovely news about the doggo Motherforkin. Sounds like he has landed on his feet with you fostering him. What's his name? Maybe your covid masks will come in handy for the 'windy' days Grin

Welcome @sar302. We'd love you to join us. Also a great mix of workouts. Hope your cold gets better soon Flowers

Well done Sophie, you are ploughing through Epic 3 Star

I would like to ask for your thoughts ladies. My weight is still going in the wrong direction. I read recently that steady state cardio is no good for weight loss after your 50's, and I assume this is what my Walks with Leslie would be classed as. It's a shame as I really love them, and hate HIIT with a passion. Not really sure what I am asking you, but just wondered if you had any thoughts or successes doing things other than HIIT workouts? Would like to avoid them if possible. Anyway, I did Epic Heat dumbbell cardio today which I find is slower due to holding the dumbbells, but still hard on this 50 year old's body Confused

Sorry about the rambling!

Day exercised 176

SophieLion · 05/10/2021 17:35

I am by no means an expert Roonetta but they always say interval training is good for weight loss. It's also more interesting (for me anyway!) than running at a steady pace. You could try 2 mins fast running/running then 3 mins slow running/Walking or 1 minute and 1.30 mins interval.

I know that when I hurt my shoulder and was doing a lot of running (as I couldn't do weights), I did lose weight.

Perhaps try adding in a couple of interval runs a week? Do you like running? I want to make sure I get a run in each week in addition to HIIT even if it means I take longer than a week to do each week of epic.

OublietteBravo · 05/10/2021 18:55

Oops. Didn’t mean to go awol! I did exercise on Friday (Ri40 L3D13 - 30min). But I was pathetically lazy over the weekend, and yesterday my neck was so stiff and painful that I decided exercise was a bad idea. Finally back to it this evening: NMTZ (50min)

Our new housemate is named Ted (brother of Bill!) a retired greyhound and an absolute doll.

Re the weight, for me the only thing that works is eating very little. I lost 4 stone, got down to a small size 10 and maintained it for 2 years with 1200 cals per day, 3 cross training/hiit/Olympic weight lifting sessions, swimming 3km and running 15km per week. I just don't have the time or enthusiasm for that so I have decided to embrace my size 14s (although I would love to be a 12). I'm trying to focus on the other health benefits of exercise these days since my clothes aren't getting any looser so I was somewhat reassured by this article at the weekend www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/health-family/fitness/study-shows-you-do-not-have-to-lose-weight-to-be-healthy-1.4688781. I find it very frustrating to be honest so I try not to think about it too much!

Today was lots more steady state cardio for me, 8km dog walking! (Clearly my step counter in my watch is set to review my daily target...I've done 14k steps and I'm only at 86% Confused)

SophieLion · 06/10/2021 12:00

Sounds like Ted needs a lot of walking MotherForkin! 8km!!!! I suppose that's because he's a greyhound?

I also had the weekend off oubliette. Finding it harder to workout at weekends now - less time and then it gets stressful trying to fit in exercise. It's either Sunday morning or nothing.

Today a 5km interval run plus a girvan core workout.

roonetta · 06/10/2021 12:40

Thanks so much ladies. Great advice Smile

That article was really interesting Motherforkin and made me re-think what is important. When I started exercising during the first lockdown, my only thought was to get moving as I was missing out on my daily walk to work and no-one knew how long we would be stuck at home. The weight started to come off which was a bonus and I started to feel really good about exercising. Then my mindset shifted to not wanting to end up like my mum, who can barely make it up and down stairs at 69, but inevitably my clothes started to get looser and again this made me feel good. This is the longest period I have carried on exercising, usually giving up after about 6 months, so I had assumed that my weight loss and toning would improve the longer I was exercising; maybe I could get those muscles, or those abs. However, this has not been the case and I have been feeling sorry for myself. What the article and your replies have shown me is that I don't have to have perfect abs or biceps to be healthy and to help me achieve strength and fitness as I age, so I will keep on doing what I am doing.

I don't run Sophie. I have tried before and ended up with shin splints. I also don't fancy starting to run outside now the autumn is here Confused but we are still considering a treadmill. I think what you have said makes perfect sense and I wonder if I could utilise this technique when doing my WWL. She does boosted walks which are jogging rather than walking, so I suppose technically I could go faster for a time and then slow back down again. I will do this and see how I go Smile

My eating has slipped back into old habits too, now things are back to being so busy. So I am cutting out all chocolate for October. I do know that if I cut my food back too much, this will be unrealistic for me and I will just stuff my face!

Anyway that's enough rambling from me. I did a Girvan 500 rep shoulder challenge today.

By the way, I am the same with workouts at the weekend Sophie and Oubliette. It's a shame as that's when I used to get the hour long workouts in.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 06/10/2021 20:46

I was very much promised that greyhounds need 2 x 20 min walks, Sophie but this guy just loves being out! Its mainly the school run we do, so that's 7ish km of itself (4x1.8k) and then if i have time I do another in the evening but he doesn't need it. More walking today but I did a short but faster run for part of it. Nearly killed me Blush I'm sleeping really badly again so my energy and motivation for anything more than a brisk walk is nil.

sar302 · 06/10/2021 22:32

Well after three days in bed, my exercise for the day amounted to about 6,000 steps. But at least I am finally up and going once again!

SophieLion · 07/10/2021 09:41

The greyhound sounds cool 😎 Can you post a photo of him MotherForkin? (If you want to, of course!)

Sorry to hear you've been under the weather sar302 💐

I agree with the article Roonetta- most important thing is to be healthy not what you look like. And to enjoy life. Not to starve ourselves constantly to look a particular way. Social media is not good for all this.

Epic 3 day 19 today (full body). Felt more like a leg workout though as there was an RDL staple and lots of other RDLs and lunges etc.

BogRollBOGOF · 07/10/2021 14:19

Did a 12mi run yesterday. Took it gently using C25k podcasts to maintain a steady, even pace.
Today's been my gentler class which is good recovery exercise.

I've managed to go to a weights/ circuits class (when possible) over the past 15m and with the disruptions I'm finally feeling the benefits and begining to shift heavier weights. I do favour classes to home workouts, and have accepted that my home workout limit is about 15-20 mins, but that's long enough to do good.

My SiLs in their 50s have had bone density scans as MiL is crumbling away from osteoarthritis. The older sister who's been doing kettlebells for a number of years is in better condition than her younger sister.
I suspect that octogenarians like MiL and DM have been scuppered by lifestyle changes as life got easier and less manual in their 40s but it still wasn't lady-like to do exercise involving weights to compensate for the lifestyle change. Aerobics and yoga are pretty limited in their bone density benefits.

I like being fairly slim and work at it, but it isn't the be-all and end-all. I embrace my muscles and life's too short and fun to get too het up on a clothes size. Having grumpy joints I do feel more comfortable in a particular range and feel it when I go over. I'd rather see people enjoying a balanced life of being active and eating well than struggling at either extreme. It doesn't surprise me that the article was extoling the benefits of being active over pure weight loss through diet. I do a lot, but it doesn't take much to see a benefit.

SophieLion · 08/10/2021 07:25

Epic 3 day 20 dumbbell HIIT. She was using 4kg so I used 3kg but had to use 2kg as the end for a shoulder press exercise as my arms had gone!!

A 12 mile run Bogroll!! Wow!! 👏🏻👏🏻
