Couch to 5K - Run 1 done...

I did my first 'run' today. Think I'm going to need help to go all the way to week 9 but determined to do it before I hit the big 50. Anyone else started this week? Fancy a support thread? Couldn't see an active recent one.

W5 R1 done yesterday. It felt good! Looking forward to this week although it looks scary!

pinkrocker · 14/04/2020 16:41

Can I join you? DS and I went for a little jog this afternoon. It wasn't bad at all, we managed 1.3 miles (mainly flat!) and I absolutely need fresh air at the moment.
Which is the best app to get?

Mumista · 14/04/2020 16:48

W6 R1 done. I certainly won't be reaching 5km when I finally run for 30 mins though!

JonHammIsMyJamm · 14/04/2020 17:26

I’ve got the Fitness22 one from the AppStore on Apple, @pinkrocker, but there are loads and a lot of people swear by the PHE one (called One You Couch To 5k on the AppStore). The PHE one has all the of the celebrity motivational coaches on it.

Mine has a motivational voice on it too but I have it switched off as I find it distracting and have found disconcerting in the past if I’m having a tough run (being told I’m ‘doing great and half way there!’ when I’m nearly dead with exhaustion is less than motivational!).

pinkrocker · 14/04/2020 17:45

@JonHammisMyJamm thank you. Will go have a look.
Do you think taking DS is a good thing? He's 12.

dancemom · 14/04/2020 18:23

@pinkrocker I have been taking dd14 with me, shocked at both her dedication and her progress!

I'm on week 7 run 2 and loving it! Won't make a full 5K in 30 minutes though 🙌🏼

thisisreallyfunny · 14/04/2020 19:30

@Greenmum2019 How was your second run..? I felt it today but completed it!! W1R3 on Thursday... 🤞🏼

Greenmum2019 · 14/04/2020 19:53

@thisisreallyfunny
Just did it and it felt really good. Not as bad as the first.
Yep.... Thursday it is!! Check back in before and after xx

choc27 · 14/04/2020 20:19

@Mumista I definitely will not be running 5k by the end of week 9! I'll be lucky to be doing 3k. I am a bit slow.... 😂

pinkrocker · 14/04/2020 20:40

@dancemom if I could get my 14yr old DD off the sofa I'd love her to join, not a chance though

dancemom · 14/04/2020 20:43

@pinkrocker there may have been some bribery involved ...

ChanklyBore · 14/04/2020 20:47

First run of week 2 for me today. It was HOT, I’m not feeling well (non-covid), I have my period AND I was stressed avoiding people. I’m going back to evening/twilight runs next time. I had one hairy moment where I thought I couldn’t possibly do it but in the end I still didn’t want to stop and kept running into my 5 min warm down Blush I guess I just don’t like being told what to do.

See I love messing with maps and planning routes online on mapometer. Suits my inner geek. It’s half the pleasure. I like incorporating interesting places along the way and different terrain.

PenfoldsFive · 15/04/2020 08:56

Hello, I’ve just done W1 R2. I’d forgotten how much I love running. Well, trotting along like an arthritic Shetland pony.

I changed my coach before today’s run (I’m using the One Love NHS app), and the commentary was for W1R1, even though the app was on R2. Anyone had this? Does it mean the commentary will be one run behind all the way to the end?

CeibaTree · 15/04/2020 09:23

PenfoldsFive I tried to change the coach as well, as Laura was starting to get on my nerves 🙈but when I went to save I got a message saying something along the lines that if I saved a new coach it would erase all my previous run data - so maybe you can't change the coach once you've started?

Duckduckgosling · 15/04/2020 11:22

Hi all - can I join?
I decided that I would get off my bus and start to exercise so I downloaded the couch to 5k.
I am so unfit and overweight.
I struggled this morning on my first run. I was okay up to run 5 but then my breathing was terrible and bottom of my legs really started to ache.
Please tell me this gets easier!!
At least I've completed the first run, that's the way I'm looking at it.

PenfoldsFive · 15/04/2020 11:41

Thanks Ceiba. That's interesting, according to the app you can change coach whenever you like! I wouldn't mind so much if it had put both the commentary and the run record back to W1R1, but they're out of sync.

Delighted to be back in the arms of Sanj though. I heart him.

PenfoldsFive · 15/04/2020 11:42

Just spotted it's called One You, not One Love. My crush on Sanj is deeper than I had realised. Grin

RonBurgundyspanpipe · 15/04/2020 11:58

Run 1, week 3 done, warm with a slight chilly breeze which was lovely. Felt great, the best I've felt so far, I think not stopping actually makes it easier. Felt less breathless too???

Only covered 2.7km though, is that overly slow or about right fit a very unfit new runner?

dancemom · 15/04/2020 12:13

Week 7 Run 3 done, the improvement is massive 💪🏼

quertyuiop100 · 15/04/2020 13:49

Joining in. Did W1R1 this morning. Thought I was going to die! Made me realise how unfit I am. I did one full minute for 4 intervals but only managed around 45 seconds for the other 4. Hope to get better. It was lovely out at 6.45 this morning though, even though my legs felt like lead afterwards. We've got an old disused railway line near us so I'm running down that.

Spanielsanddaughters · 15/04/2020 14:27

@Duckduckgosling it will get easier. I started about 8 weeks ago and when I first started I was sore and exhausted!
I’ve just finished and can now jog for over 35mins.
Just give yourself time to think about breathing properly, your feet and keeping relaxed... I find when I’m really struggling I really tense up my arms and it’s even harder work!

happytobemrsg · 15/04/2020 14:28

I can’t seem to do W4. It’s killing me. It’s supposed to be 2x 3mins & 2x 5mins but I can’t do 5mins, the most I can do is 4. Looks like I’ll be stuck on this week a while ☹️

CeibaTree · 15/04/2020 14:48

Eek I'm starting week 4 tomorrow - it sounds really hard!

happytobemrsg · 15/04/2020 15:47

I’ve never exercised regularly before & I chad DS2 by CS 8m ago so I might not be the norm!

HappyLemonSadLemon · 15/04/2020 16:15

Argh - putting off doing W4R1. My house is very tidy as a result!! Someone make me go!
