I did my first 'run' today. Think I'm going to need help to go all the way to week 9 but determined to do it before I hit the big 50. Anyone else started this week? Fancy a support thread? Couldn't see an active recent one.

Just found this as I returned from W2R1. Am enjoying it more than I thought, possibly as there is nothing else to do at the moment. Hello all!

choc27 · 28/03/2020 14:11

Can I join? Just did week 4 run 1 last week and need to do r2 today really. Feeling a bit like I can't be arsed though!

LittleBird74 · 28/03/2020 15:31

I just (somehow) completed week 4 yesterday.
Dreading next week and I have absolutely no idea how I’m meant to run 20 minutes straight by W5R3 when all week I’ve felt like passing out after 5 minutes Grin

Spanielsanddaughters · 28/03/2020 16:51

I did my first couple weeks faster as I skipped a couple runs, now will probably stick to 3 runs a week so I have a break in between. Also have no idea how the longer runs are going to go, think I might start repeating!

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/03/2020 16:53

Feeling a bit like I can't be arsed though!

As a seasoned pro, I will tell you about legs, head, heart. Your legs run the first part of the race, then your head needs to do it's job. Then the hard last part, your heart carries you. The most important bit is head. You will think, "I can't do it" "I can just walk for a bit longer" "this is too hard" "I can't be arsed"

You have to get the head game sorted. Once it is you recognise it. I got to 6km of a 10km today and my head said, "I'll just walk a bit". I know enough now to challenge that, and I just promise to run to the next tree/lamppost and by then the feeling has passed.

People think they can't run because of their fitness. It's almost never that.

choc27 · 29/03/2020 09:55

Thanks for the advice Mrs, I will definitely get on with it today. I know I can do it, it's just am I motivated to do it, that's always been my issue to be honest. Motivation. I'm lazy.

There's some truth in this. In a half or full marathon, for example, I'll often spend the first 4-5 miles thinking "oooh my knee/leg/hip hurts, I can't do this" or something similar. Then you settle into the rhythm and your head takes over as the miles click off on your watch, counting upwards.
But by the last 3 miles of a half, or anything over 20 on a full, it's about wanting it. Your body's tired, your head is saying "stop, I've had enough" but you push on because you want to.
I PBd in the half a few weeks ago. Thought I was going to throw up from mile 9 onwards (not dissimilar to how I felt in the first couple of weeks of c25k). But you just push on, and then afterwards you feel great Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/03/2020 14:17

Me too. Worse than you I bet! When I'm really unmotivated I just put my running clothes on. That's the minimum I'm allowed to do. And once I'm dressed I think, fuck it, might as well run!

DrPeppersPhD · 29/03/2020 14:52

I'm not a C25K runner, but can I join in anyway? I'm a kendo player who's running to challenge myself with my posture and keep my fitness up with the chaos going on at the moment.
For the PP asking for a good pilates work out, I do this one:

It's more yoga than pilates (not that I really understand the difference) but I'm usually dripping in sweat by the end, if it's of any help!
choc27 · 29/03/2020 14:54

I did it! W4R2 done! Thanks for spurring me on.

SandyFire · 29/03/2020 15:03

I’ve started too. Just done week1 run2 yesterday. I’m looking forward to it. I have hyper mobility and have had problems in the past with knees and hips. So I’m hoping that doing it really slowly will help me build up strength.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/03/2020 15:09

Good job choc

Pinkstars2501 · 29/03/2020 17:36

Hello! I'm on week 6 run 2, well I was, I did that today. Planning run 3 for Tuesday.

Found it a bit hard today even though week 5s 20min wasn't too bad, no idea how I'm going to do 25!

I also don't get to 5k, more like 4...

happytobemrsg · 29/03/2020 23:09

W2 R2 ✔️
Not as hard as R1 but I do have to push myself to do 90 seconds. God knows how I’m supposed to do 3 minutes in w3. Surely that’s too big a jump?!?!

resipsa · 29/03/2020 23:16

It's fine, really! I'm planning to go out at 6 tomorrow morning for W3R3 - you only run for 3 mins twice so defensive do-able. Hope the clock change doesn't make the get up too much harder 😬

OP posts:
resipsa · 29/03/2020 23:16

That should be definitely do-able 🙄

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/03/2020 00:54

When I started, I would be dying and red-faced during a minute. Horrible, wondered about heart attacks.

Weirdly 10 minutes is easier. I kid you not. That first minute is always terrible and then you get into your stride. Eventually smaller intervals are actually worse. I promise.

eyesbiggerthanstomach · 30/03/2020 00:59

I did week 1 run 1 on Wednesday and have had severe DOMS since where I can't even walk up and down stairs.

Things have improved and I'm planning to do run 2 tomorrow. Have I had too many rest days?

Also I worry I'm running too fast. I have always been a sprinter and not a long distance runner as I'm too unfit but how fast are people running? I think I should slow down.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/03/2020 02:28

I'd probably start from 1 again. I never leave more than three days. I also run through DOMS. It cures it.

I run slowly but not too slowly. There's two things. Cadence and stride. Sprinting is long strides, right? I like to keep my cadence about 170 and my strides short. I think 180 is right but I get out of breath. Any less than 170 and I'm bouncing and that wastes energy.

Essentially, don't move your head up and down too much and waste little energy.

resipsa · 30/03/2020 07:10

Just back from W3R3. It's snowing. This month is officially weird!

ememem84 · 30/03/2020 08:16

W1r1 today. Hoorah! Feeling proud that I did it.

BratBratBrat · 30/03/2020 08:28

Please may I join you?
W1R3 for me today. I've just bought new trainers because my old ones were last used canoeing in the Lake District.

wallyrag · 30/03/2020 08:38

I'm on week 2, I've started so many times due to illness and injury. Week 3 is the furthest I've done. Reading all your posts are so inspiring!!

MintToBee · 30/03/2020 08:53

Just started it. Did Week 1 day 2 yesterday but the app crashed at the end and deleted my progress 😪

Spanielsanddaughters · 30/03/2020 12:09

W5r1 done this morning, actually found it quite easy, plus only did about 30secs of my 3min rest between 6 and 5 minute runs as my app went crazy too!
The change in timings mean my long slow incline was at the walk interval rather than jog- think that helped a lot!!
