Couch to 5K - Run 1 done...

I did my first 'run' today. Think I'm going to need help to go all the way to week 9 but determined to do it before I hit the big 50. Anyone else started this week? Fancy a support thread? Couldn't see an active recent one.

GO DO W4R1 Happy Lemon!

I’m not due to run today. Tomorrow. But I’m not far enough on to advise on week four.

Week two here, and my record speed is 3.63km in thirty minutes! Not much faster than walking! But never mind, I’m sure I’ll speed up.

ChanklyBore · 15/04/2020 16:43

Can you slow it down, mrsg?

HappyLemonSadLemon · 15/04/2020 18:07

Thank you Chankly. Just went out. Did the first three runs ok but after about a minute of the second 5m run I was struggling. Slowed to a walk for about 45 seconds and then ran the rest. So I haven't officially done the full run.

I'm glad I went out but annoyed I didn't do the whole thing. So much of it is mindset though, isn't it. I run on a bridle way and the world and his wife were out on walks, bike rides, horse rides and they all annoyed me, as did my own lazy-arsed dog who wouldn't keep up even though I run at a snails pace.

When is the best time to run? I find if I go in the morning I reward myself with snacks all day thereby defeating the weight loss part of all this. If I run in the evening it's busy and I dread it all day. What does everyone else do?

Also, does everyone make sure they do three complete runs before moving onto the next week? What if your first one of the week is a bit rubbish but the other two are ok?

happytobemrsg · 15/04/2020 19:42

I think I’ll have to. I’ll do 3 mins / 4 mins until I’m able to get up to 5 mins & complete week 4. I’m gutted but I’m able to far more than I did 4 weeks ago so I’m trying to take that as a positive

resipsa · 15/04/2020 20:32

@PenfoldsFive
The commentary for all 3 runs in Week 1 is the same so don't worry. So long as the app is showing the right one in the flowchart, you're on track.

Did W6R2 today. Felt much better than R1 because it was warmer! Slightly dreading R3 at 25 mins 😬.

@happytobemrsg - I think we are in the same boat with W4, but you are right - we are already much further along than we were a 3 weeks ago.

@resipa - You're doing amazingly. Week 6 looks like quite a challenge! Good luck with R3.

choc27 · 15/04/2020 20:47

W5R2 done. Not too bad. Next one is the full 20 mins in one go 😬 bricking it a bit!
Well done everyone who is sticking with it.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 15/04/2020 20:52

I go before 6.30. Kids and husband still asleep. Wakes me up. Rarely see a soul. Peace and quiet for walk home!

I'm a rules/instructions person so just do them all in the order I'm told although I'll be 5 weeks in by Friday but at the end of Week 6 with a rest day at least in between. Believe in the programme 😂

@HappyLemonSadLemon I am finding it much easier in lockdown. I have discovered I am a morning runner, but I don't do early mornings! So around 10/11am I nip out for a run while the kids are quiet and DH wfh. In normal times that wouldn't be possible I can only run in the evenings but that is when I lose motivation, as I get more and more knackered as the day goes on. And then I end up not bothering. I did try to convince myself that when we are all back to work and school I will get up at 6am and run but the likelihood of that is next to none! So I really hope I can keep this up after lockdown ends.

CeibaTree · 16/04/2020 09:55

I just did week 4 run 1 and managed to do it without stopping, although I was a real sweaty mess afterwards haha.

I find the mornings between 7:30 and 8:30 work best for me, and I like to have it out of the way before I start the day. I think if I waited until later in the day to do it, I would probably talk myself out of it and find excuses, but by going when I haven't had coffee yet so am not quite fully awake means I just kind of go on out auto pilot without thinking about it too much!

dancemom · 16/04/2020 11:01

Did week 8 run 1 today, 28 minutes and came out about 4.3KM I think.

HappyLemonSadLemon · 16/04/2020 12:28

Yes I know what you mean about talking yourself out of it!!

I tried early morning today. It wasn't meant to be a run but I'm back at (remote) work as from today and needed to take the dog out early. As it was soooo much quieter than in the evening I thought I might as well give W4R1 another go and see what happens. Managed it this time!!! Yay.

Early morning runs will only work for me in the summer though because I live in the sticks and there is no road lighting near me.

@dancemom - well done. Week 8 is impressive stuff.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 16/04/2020 15:40

@HappyLemonSadLemon, I’ve done this programme in the past and I’ve repeated runs that have been a struggle or unsuccesssful before moving onto the next one. Sometimes I even repeated whole weeks before moving on if I felt I needed to. It worked for me and I didn’t mind that it took me a bit longer to complete the programme. I’ll do the same this time if I feel I need to. Listen to your body.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 16/04/2020 15:41

And yes, definitely slow your pace @happytobemrsg.

choc27 · 16/04/2020 17:20

Wow @dancemom that is great! I can't imagine running that far even when I am running 28 mins!

quertyuiop100 · 16/04/2020 17:25

My thighs are killing me from yesterday and scheduled to run again tomorrow. Should I wait until Saturday or just go for it tomorrow? Don't want to do myself an injury, but sure it's just (very) underused muscle pain.

Greenmum2019 · 16/04/2020 18:06

Run 3 starting now!!!

resipsa · 16/04/2020 19:26

@dancemom 👏

dancemom · 16/04/2020 19:29

Aw thank you guys, was well chuffed. First day I have run without dd, she had blisters, so was able to go at a better pace.

Still had that internal battle towards the end, bargaining with myself that I could just stop as dd wasn't there, as it wouldnt count etc etc

Really is a mental battle rather than a physical one

happytobemrsg · 16/04/2020 20:39

Back running tomorrow & will try to stick to my version of W3.5 😂

resipsa · 17/04/2020 07:07

Beautiful out now! W6R3 done. 25 mins. 3.67kms. For anyone just starting, I struggled with 1 min when I started in mid-March so keep going. Saw a friend at 21 mins and so wanted to stop 😂 but didn't!

resipsa · 17/04/2020 07:11

PS Used new Apple AirPods Pro for first time. Hands down best lockdown purchase!

OP posts:
HappyLemonSadLemon · 17/04/2020 08:48

@resipsa - fantastic job!! Mid-March doesn't seem that long ago so it's incredible that you're now running for 25 minutes. Brilliant.

It's become a bit of a joke in our house about just how many headphones I have. I keep buying different ones which are either uncomfortable / fall out / you can't change the song / can't change the volume / aren't loud enough etc. It turns out I am very exacting in my headphone requirements!! I bought some recommended upthread (Kamrton) which are pretty good and work well with Zoom meetings as well, but now you have forced me to google AirPods Pro and if I end up buying them it will be entirely your fault!! Wink 😂

resipsa · 17/04/2020 08:56

@HappyLemonSadLemon

You're welcome 😉.
The sound is great and the active noise cancellation/transparency modes work really well. And they didn't fall out!
