Hi, can I join?

I’m a new graduate of c25k. Final run completed today. I’m unlikely to add big numbers to the tally but aim to do 5km every other day, every little helps Smile.

Is the running total in miles?

emummy · 02/06/2020 16:30

Welcome! Congratulations on completing c25k!
Yes the numbers are in miles, they are the total for everyone on the thread, so just add your miles to the last posted number. Don’t worry if that goes wrong, getting the numbers mixed up is a recurring theme for us!

Thanks, @emummy. In that case...

50k plan?!

BookShop · 02/06/2020 19:14

I’m joining too. Also graduated from C25K a few weeks back. I’m running 5km daily and managed to complete a 10km last Friday. Finished 5km today in 29 minutes and beat a couple of my PBs. Really getting the running bug.

emummy · 02/06/2020 19:20

Welcome BookShop! Running every day, impressive! My body only managed 4 times a week before complaining.

BookShop · 02/06/2020 19:55

@emummy thanks. At the moment I’m a bit achey but able to continue. I am making sure I stretch lots and warm down properly. The running is the only alone time I get right now and I need that time.

It’s lovely to join the new group. I’m hoping to continue running post lockdown so the more I can improve and gain benefits now the easier it’ll be to continue.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 02/06/2020 19:58

Hi @BookShop Smile

Amaura · 02/06/2020 20:17

Welcome @BookShop and JonHamm

Book, I’m another one who’s body doesn’t like running every day. One thing that helped me was knowing whether I walk 5km or run it, the calorie burn is almost the same (and time isn’t to different once you include stretches). Just in case you ever need permission to give yourself an off day and walk instead.

Walk with the children today as have a half week at work. Then a gentle 5km before circuits, definitely not matching last weeks mileage. I think I’ve fixed on the end of June to do my 50km run.

Greetings @BookShop and @JonHammIsMyJamm. I’m usually a 4 runs a week runner but my new training plan is 5 which I find is actually easier to get the weekly mileage in as the runs are slightly shorter.

Recovery 6 yesterday and hard 10K this evening.

Another tempo ish effort here (was 8 miles so figured I should run slower than 10km pace 😅) but did even manage negative splits and a time I was pleased with. Loving the cooler weather.

Amaura · 03/06/2020 20:31

I agree I had to to adapt to 5 runs to get a shot at decent mileage. Started with just a super slow recovery Sunday which eventually turned into a decent distance effort. Some weeks all my midweek runs are just gentle pace and then I find the next three week block I can step up speed again. I found I had to extend all the training plans and often repeat blocks but I was recovering from shin splints and building up my glute strength, and now I just enjoy building it slowly

Speaking of which i really should do a benchmark 5km at some point but then I never want to be too tired to do the longer runs

emummy · 04/06/2020 07:41

Easy run today, trying to relax ahead of a very busy day

Amaura · 04/06/2020 18:29

Much easier 10km today

I’ve ran 5km everyday of June so far. I’m hoping to run 5km everyday. My aim it to get fitter and stronger so I can consistently running at 30mins or less.

I’m mixing up the runs and training lengths. What else really makes you a good runner? I’ve got good kit and try to ensue I’m hydrated. Any other reliable tips? What makes you a good runner? All ideas welcomed.

Amaura · 04/06/2020 22:03

A good runner is one who’s enjoying themselves (corny but really true). Everyone’s goals are different and often differ year to year (eg you can’t run long without sacrificing gym).

There is a book I hear recommended and ‘The art of running faster’. The other thing is ensure your doing exercise other than running in order to strengthen up and avoid over use injuries (as well varying length and speed, most runs should be easy pace with only one or two runs a week at a faster effort)

emummy · 05/06/2020 06:25

The art of running faster is a good book, by Julian Goater I think. I also enjoyed 'Your pace or mine' by Lisa Jackson, which is all about the social connections of running and the opposite of going fast, so an interesting perspective.
I suppose it depends on your definition, a lot of people think good means fast. If you want to get faster then doing different types of runs in a week is important - a mix of easy paced runs with speed sessions such as intervals, hills and fartlek. There are lots of training plans that you can look at online to get ideas. I agree that strength training is an important part of training.
For me a good runner is one who runs regularly, enjoys it and doesn't get too caught up in judging themselves by pace or distances. Running is one of the few sports that you can do the way you want to - run faster, slower, long distances, short distances, twice a week, every day, road, trails, it's all running. This year I am in a busy job, so I'm sticking to shorter runs, maybe next year I'll do another marathon, maybe not, I'll see how I feel and decide on what makes me happy.

IRun4Me · 05/06/2020 06:58

Welcome new people. Good to have you here.
First run in a week as being back in work and still doing the homeschooling etc has been exhausting and I physically felt I couldn’t do it. Short and wet but nice to be back out.

Thanks for lovely welcome Smile.

Went out this morning and had to rejig my route as my planned route was blocked due to maintenance works. Consequently, I ended up doing a mix of tarmac paths and bumpy cross country/trail run type paths and had no idea of the actual distance until I got home and plotted it out (also forgot to start Strava). It was just shy of 3 miles. All in all, a bit of a trainwreck.

Bizarre weather today, rain, wind, hail, sun, hot/cold and it certainly made for an interesting run this evening.

Amaura · 06/06/2020 16:37

So last night, seeing that weather might warm up again decided to do my 50km today. No taper made it difficult as I could still feel the long tempo from earlier in the week, but somehow I finished it (with plenty of rests on the return and not particularly feeling the benefits of a tailwind having dealt with 15 miles of head wind on the way out)

emummy · 06/06/2020 18:43

Wow well done Amaura! Somehow the wind never seems as strong when it’s behind you...

PaddingtonPaddington · 06/06/2020 19:16

Fantastic Amaura! Well done.

I managed just over 10 miles this morning in high winds and pouring rain which was an effort after yesterday evenings 10.5 miles but these back to back runs are part of my training plan so determined to follow it. Much needed rest day tomorrow.

Pretty rubbish run this morning. Planned to do a 5k time trial, started ok but just felt too hard by about halfway through. The motivation just wasn’t there. It’s been a tough week at work this week, some difficult patient sessions, and the peri menopause has been a struggle too. So I just jogged home, going to have a nice hot shower & regroup.

IRun4Me · 07/06/2020 11:48

Seriously impressed amaura
Oh emummy I hope you feel brighter soon.
I had a very tired run this morning but it was nice to be out. Similar issues of work and peri menopause and trying to juggle all the home and homeschooling stuff.

It’s good you recognised the run was not meant to be. I’m not afraid any more of turning around if I’m not feeling it in the first mile. I’ve regretted those but regretted runs where I’ve tried to push through it.

I did another 11.7 miles today as I was taking part in a challenge of doing your longest weekly mileage +20% which for me was 60 miles. Technically I still had tomorrow but wanted it done. I don’t expect I’ll be running much next week 😄.

Thank you your kind comments as well. It got me thinking that I find every runner inspiring and it’s nice to have that in a community.
