Run Every Day January 2019 MIND

Just wondering who’s doing this? As a Parkrunner who’s been out of the game past 6 weeks with a trio of colds and morning sickness (cheers bump) I’m using this to get back on it.

Listening to a Podcast about it yesterday MIND are steering away from promoting running every day and instead being active every day.

My goal is to hit a modest 40min 6K by the end of the month.

As I have a 36minute 5K time I think this is a stretch goal without setting myself up for total failure.

Anyone else doing it? X

Urgh, another cold. It’s like every time I feel really full of power and energy and achievement it comes crashing down the next day Sad

@verbena the marathon is April. My mileage will gradually increase from now each weekend to hit 20 miles 3 weeks before the marathon then taper off until the big day. I’ll also need to include 3 other weekday runs to be marathon fit.

To get to 20 miles you’d only need to train up to 16, and if it’s a trail route you’d walk plenty too. I did a trail marathon last year and we had to walk parts because it was so muddy and the hills were crazy. It was an insane amount of fun!

FATEdestiny · 13/01/2019 09:19

I did my longest ever distance yesterday, 25km.

Normally I have several 5km runs per week, a couple of 10km and then a long run. But because I'm challenging myself to 300km over the month, so 10km per day, I've skipped my long runs.

But I'd found myself itching for that weary, exhausted feeling that comes after a long run. So much so I felt I needed a big, long run. Took me 3h (with some walking). I hope I've not sabotaged my 300km month as a result. I think I'll be ok running today, although I do feel tired. Might just do a slow 5km later.

BrassicaBabe · 13/01/2019 09:36

Woe Fate that's impressive!! Shock

Verbena87 · 13/01/2019 10:01

sanddunes I think it might be doable in that case. Won’t write it off yet! I’ve done trail halfs before (I don’t road run if I can help it, my hips don’t like it and I love getting a dose of countryside) but this is a category BL fell race so fiercer ascents, no marked course and map and compass required. Will see how brave/foolish I’m feeling when entries open! Good luck with your marathon.

fate that’s brilliant, well done!

IRun4Me · 13/01/2019 12:29

Well done everyone so far and hope anyone who is poorly is fighting fit soon.
Also thank you - this thread has kept me going and I’ve not only achieved 13/13 but also totalled 40 miles since the 1st. Feeling dead proud of myself and now honestly think (fingers crossed) that I might be able to make it to the end of January

AuntieStella · 13/01/2019 13:06

I did a 10k event today - reasonably pleased with my time (actually, it wasn't bad at all, as I've had a cold all week. Back is slightly achey, so the attractive smell of deep heat is wafting round me.

I've run every day so far, so feeling good!

Some of these trail runs sound fabulous! Though I wouldn't fancy one when they get slimy.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 13/01/2019 13:38

Had to take a day off today as poorly so will put the £5 I am fining myself into my just giving account. I did send five children home on Friday with vomiting so I think I know where I have got it from!

SandunesAndRainclouds · 13/01/2019 13:48

@Verbena87 a fell 20 is really really doable in that time. It would be as much about time on your feet and overall strength as it would about distance. Can you include cross training / strength in your week?

I’m really tight in my hips today after yesterday’s effort so I’ve spent some time with DD doing gentle warm up and stretching. I want 5 miles tomorrow and don’t want to do too much today to jeopardise that.

Well done on your 10km @AuntieStella it’s probably my favourite distance! I didn’t fancy the mud etc either but I represented my club at an XC race and loved it. Then did a trail marathon and it was fantastic. Trails don’t have the same pressure as a road run, so there’s time for a giggle too.

TriSkiRun99 · 13/01/2019 14:46

Squeezed in a 5k run at lunchtime so I can now sit on my arse the rest of the day Smile also had a 2k walk holding up my youngest DD on her roller skates so hoping I’ve not put my shoulder out by constantly catching her!

Verbena87 · 13/01/2019 15:00

@Irun4me that’s brilliant, well done you!

@auntiestella I am sending imaginary finish-line cake your way, I like 10k as well - long enough not to feel you’re having to wallop along flat out, but short enough to not be a shuffle either. And definitely try trails, with decent shoes you’ll be fine (I run through really clarty fields and on a fair amount of wet rock; the only time I’ve fallen over recently was on a badly-lit pavement when I was too arrogant to bother with a head torch for ‘just a road run for goodness sake, stop fussing’) and it is just an unadulterated joy.

@paulhollywoodssexgut @stayingaliveisawayoflife and anyone else feeling crummy, hope you’re all better soon.

@sanddunesandrainclouds you’re very convincing Wink. I think I’m going to go for it. What’s the worst that can happen? I get a long walk somewhere beautiful. Not exactly a disaster. I need to get back on the Pilates I think, and try and get some long days hillwalking in as well.

Did 8.5 miles today; wet and hilly and still managed negative splits and to stay mostly below 10 minute miles, so I’m happy.

CalmConfident · 13/01/2019 15:08

Cheeky 1.5 mile errand run done, yearning to get back on country off road trails. 10k is my favourite too

SandunesAndRainclouds · 13/01/2019 15:17

That’s fab @verbena87. If you can do 8, you can do 10. If you can do 10, you can do a half... once your at half distance you’ve already built stamina and resistance so you’re adding miles. Training is only another 3 miles on top of a half....! Easy right?! Wink I wish I could apply that about my marathon training!!

Verbena87 · 13/01/2019 15:32

Ah sanddunes you can do it! I always think distance running is about 20% body, 70% mind games and a final 10% of sheer stubbornness and refusal to consider yourself capable of failure. If you’re chasing a time that’s a bit different, but you can definitely finish!

SandunesAndRainclouds · 13/01/2019 16:41

It’s my 5th marathon so I really should know better, but have had a lot going on in life generally and I haven’t run as much as I should since Summer. So now it feels like a bit of a hurried training plan, which I don’t like.

BrassicaBabe · 13/01/2019 20:05

Day 12 done. Just a 1k. No rowing today as the wind was too strong.

Jealous of all of your guys with large distances. Most I've done is a 10K. Times between 1.05 and 1.11. I've got to be in the right mindset. Before Xmas I really enjoyed it. The one I set off on since NY was the worse run of the year and I ended up 60% waking the 5k Sad

TriSkiRun99 · 14/01/2019 09:53

Post school run 5k done - pleased I’ve now run 7 out of 14days which considering I spent most of last week sat on the sofa coughing & feeling crap isn’t bad. My intention was never to run every day but exercise in some form. Nearly half way through January Yah!

TriSkiRun99 · 14/01/2019 09:58

That’s a good 10k time BrassicaBabe mine are similar, and I spent 6mths consistently running a mix of 5k and one 10k a week before I started adding 1km a week to get upto 21k. A lot of it is strength and mental training I’ve found to go further. My hip started hurting but I’ve done squats, glute bridges and planks every week have helped with that. You can do it, if that’s what you want to do Smile but lots of folk are happy at 5-10k level too as it’s much easier to fit in short runs and less recovery needed. I’m zonked for the rest of the day after a 16k+ run.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 14/01/2019 12:02

Sunny 5 miles / 52 minutes done. Very happy with that.

Mymadworld · 14/01/2019 14:15

Managed another 7km yesterday and wanting to up my distance towards the end of the week so having a 'rest' day today with a 2.5km slow jog to the shops & back once I'm home from work.

Verbena87 · 14/01/2019 15:09

brassica I’m with the others: if you can run 10k you can run 20 if that’s something you want - just build up nice and slowly (the rule I’m vaguely using and sometimes abusing is to add 10% to your long run each week, and drop the mileage back a bit every 4 weeks to give yourself a break) and practise aggressive positive thinking! But would also agree 10k is a really nice distance and there’s no need to keep pursuing longer and longer runs unless you find it brings you joy.

Good work tri and sanddunes - just a pushchair walk for me but the sky is beautiful today and reminded me how soothing it is to just be outside.

AuntieStella · 15/01/2019 00:01

Just a quick mile for me today. Can hardly believe that I've run a two-week streak, and that we're nearly at the half-way point!

I've back-to-back 10k races this weekend coming (that's one each day, not one straight after the other!) so I'm finding it hard to fit in a proper long training run (next is due to be 75mins, but it might have to wait until next week)

TriSkiRun99 · 15/01/2019 14:07

Swam 1k today as my “exercise” every day.

Mymadworld · 15/01/2019 14:58

I just did a 2km jog out and brisk walk back last night as I wanted to rest before building up later this week.

I've got a half hour window for a run tonight between kids clubs, before dinner and going out and thought I might try some speed/interval type training but never really bothered before (hence never got any better I'm sure) so a bit clueless Blush. From what little I've read, it seems to be start with a warm up, do a middle section of fast/recover, fast/recover for a good 6-8 repeats then a cool down run but I may be making it far more simplistic than I should. Ive not got time to read up on anything technical and gong to an unknown residential area (so can't rely on dong hill reps or a specific distance) so would something like this work to get me started:

10 mins easy

Repeat 6 times
30 seconds hard sprint
45-60 seconds walk/jog

5-10 mins easy and stretch

IRun4Me · 15/01/2019 16:39

Sorry I can’t offer much help on the interval run- I’m not very good at it. I think I need to practice more as my ‘fast’ bit ends up my normal speed Confused
I agree AuntoeStella and can’t believe I’ve done 15 days in a row. Once tomorrow is ticked off we are over half way Grin
