Run Every Day January 2019 MIND

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 27/12/2018 09:21

Just wondering who’s doing this? As a Parkrunner who’s been out of the game past 6 weeks with a trio of colds and morning sickness (cheers bump) I’m using this to get back on it.

Listening to a Podcast about it yesterday MIND are steering away from promoting running every day and instead being active every day.

My goal is to hit a modest 40min 6K by the end of the month.

As I have a 36minute 5K time I think this is a stretch goal without setting myself up for total failure.

Anyone else doing it? X

I've signed up and have also signed up for a 0-5K Learn To Run course at a similar time so am cheating a bit. ☺️

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/12/2018 09:32

That sounds like a recipe for injuries to me. Rest days are pretty important in running.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 27/12/2018 10:13

Oh yeah @OhYouBadBadKitten

That’s been the feedback over the past couple of years hence the gear change about being active every day.

I think if you are a frequent runner though that busting out maybe 1k on a “quiet” day though isn’t a recipe for disaster?

Folk do need to listen to their bodies though

doh! sorry, I read that totally backwards Blush

LastOneDancing · 27/12/2018 11:40

I'm in. I've got my laces!

I did it last year and found my pace naturally increased and I was in the running habit, so it was much easier to carry on. I managed 78 miles over the month so aiming for 80 this time. I like achievable goals.

I totally agree to listening to your body. The majority of my runs will be 1-2 miles, and yoga when I feel I need a rest day/snow/housebound by children.

I donate a fiver to MIND for each day I dont exercise, so can't afford to slack off 😂

AuntieStella · 27/12/2018 11:50

I'm in!

And yes I'm planning on actually running every day (except those where I'm hiking). I'll go under 20mins (boring) jog round the park at the end of the road for 'rest' days," with 3 days of more challenging runs per week (Half Marathon training)

I'm donating £31 to MIND (£1 per day as my personal entrance fee), then like LastOneDancing I shall fine myself a further donation on inactive days

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 27/12/2018 13:52

Now I’m no expert runner but if I can haul myself round the park for one circuit (that’s 1K) then to me that counts.

My second goal is to attend every Parkrun in Jan and that includes NYD. That will get me up to a pleasant total of 20 x

IRun4Me · 27/12/2018 16:45

I’m doing it. I do tend to be active everyday but that is walking/cycling to school or work or taking the dog out.
I want to use it for me time - so a run or a nice long dog walk - rather than the routine stuff I have to do. On the days I don’t do a run I want to do yoga to up my flexibility and ‘calmness’. (I lack both of those!!)

Meesh77 · 27/12/2018 16:47

January seems the worst month to do this. I walk a lot and I find January is the month I’m most disrupted by snow and ice.

MercianQueen · 27/12/2018 16:54

I'm doing it this year - need to re-set my habits as I've only run sporadically for the last few months and I need running back in my life as stress-relief!

thisisnothow · 27/12/2018 19:39

Currently running 5k a day in December and feel great. No injuries and really got me back into exercise. Going to keep it up in January too.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 27/12/2018 20:08

Mental question but have you had any colds of late @thisisnothow as I do wonder if keeping at it staves off bugs

OP posts:
EdithDickie · 28/12/2018 04:50

I'm doing it too!

I did it last year and loved it, really kicked off my year, the NYD run was especially nice.

I've had an exhausting couple of months, horrendously busy at work plus we've all had colds and sickness bugs so been a bit inactive of late. I've entered a marathon in April so really need to get on it!

Last year I did 96 miles which would bring excellent again but I'm aiming for 2 million per day which should be achievable and will see how I get on.

Good luck everyone!

AuntieStella · 28/12/2018 09:46

I really hope those millions are a typo for miles!

It's done in January to attract New Year Resolutionists, and also as an incentive to get people out. Numerous studies show how good running, and all other forms of exercise particularly outdoor exercise, is for MH - and I guess it becomes even more important in the SAD months.

I hadn't thought about fallbacks if it's too treacherous underfoot or if I get a lurgy!

I've just bought new trainers in the January sales.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 28/12/2018 11:15

What trainers did you get @AuntieStella ?

Can anyone recommend a decent sports bra for the mega-boobed? My norks are massive atm and need strong restraint, totally prepared to pay ££ if need be x

OP posts:
Gymntonic · 28/12/2018 15:00

I'm up for this. Previously ran half marathons but recently park runs have been my limit. Planning to kick off New Year's Day with a double park run somewhere and take it from there. Really ought to factor in some weights and flexibility at some point in the week too.

BrassicaBabe · 28/12/2018 15:59

Ooh, I logged on planning to post this very question. I'm in!

I managed sub 30 min 5k in August and September having worked very VERY hard. Then had an injury in October and completely lost my mojo. Now I aim for 2x5k and 1x10k in a week. But haven't very often achieved it.

RED for me would mean just a 1k on a busy day.

Has everyone signed up to MIND, FB, Strava? Where are folks hanging out? Grin

SandunesAndRainclouds · 28/12/2018 16:35

I’m in, too.

I’ve really slacked off marathon training so far, so I’m doing it to literally have a tick box. My quiet days will be a mile and I’ll start building up marathon miles at the weekend as per usual.

Best bit is my DD(15) wants to join me for the one milers, which has made my day.

SkiMum99 · 28/12/2018 16:49

I’ve signed up to with the intention of being active every day, I’m already doing stuff 5d a week easily so it will help me be more mindful about it as starting a new job my stress levels are going to rise in January I think. I like the idea of aiming for every ParkRun in Jan as I already try to do min 2 a month. I’ve downloaded a colour in tracker to go on the fridge to write in what that days activity is. Just clocked over 100km running this month so I’d like to stay around that total.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut best thing for big boobs has been a shocker absorber Run bra with a braBand over the top. It’s been only combo to stop ligament pain but I’ve still suffered a bit on long runs (1.5hrs+) as I’m training for a half. I did try a second “fake” type braBand from China but it’s definitely not been as bounce proof as the branded version.

SkiMum99 · 28/12/2018 16:54

BrassicaBabe I know how you feel I’ve got a 29min ParkRun back in May then had most of July & Aug off running due to old injury flare up and I’ve slowly had to build back up my running but my fastest ParkRun has still only got to 30.50secs in Early Dec so I’m slowly closing the gap again to the elusive sub-30min but I’ve realised I’m built for distance not speed Grin

thisisnothow · 28/12/2018 17:36

Don't want to tempt fate @PaulHollywood, but not had a cough, cold, illness all winter dispite DH recently having a v heavy cold and sneezing all over me. I was wondering if it was a side effect of the exercise. It's definitely made me feel healthier physically and mentally.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 28/12/2018 19:42

I’m built for neither distance nor speed @SkiMum99 Grin

Thanks also for boob advice. Think I will trial my new ultra hardcore sports bra from sweaty betty (cheeky on the way home purchase today) and get the band if there’s still boobtug.

OP posts:
Verbena87 · 28/12/2018 21:01

I’m in! Probably won’t run every day as I’m still being a bit careful after delivering 10lb9oz whopper in 2017 (prolapse and nerve damage and all kinds of pelvic floor fun Hmm - things are way better but I don’t want to take the piss and end up with my organs falling out) but will aim to consciously get active daily and get out running at least twice a week.

@paulhollywoodssexgut you want an underwired panache sports bra: kept my breastfeeding udders in check (though now they’re more proportionate again and I’m going further I use a shock absorber as the heftier panache gives me armpit chafe after about 4 miles)

FATEdestiny · 28/12/2018 21:15

I've run pretty much every day since early April (I think there have been 5 or 6 days I've not run, so I can't claim to have fully RED for 9 months, but pretty much).

So I will be running every day in January. My challenge is at least 50km per week, every week.

AuntieStella · 28/12/2018 22:29

Hi PaulHollywoodsSexGut

Bras: I have Shock Absorber (various styles) good for all size of nork. Another good make for the large is Panache. I've also seen Enell recommended.

Trainers: I need a neutral sole and like lots of cushioning. I've been running in Hoka recently. The ones I've just got are Nike ZoomFly (which encourage a forefoot strike, which is meant to impel you forwards). Review: runrepeat.com/nike-zoom-fly
